3DS has three to five hours of battery life photo

So, it finally happened. Some 3DS news has occurred that's suddenly made me incredibly cynical about the system. Nintendo's Japanese 3DS site has revealed that the upcoming handheld sports a pathetic three to five hours of battery life.

This is how much life it has when playing 3DS games. The battery will last for five to eight hours when playing older DS games. The specs also state that the system takes 3.5 hours to charge, so depending on how quickly you can drain your battery, the 3DS can take longer to charge than it does to die. Nice.

Nintendo fans have always been able to hold superior battery life over the heads of PSP lovers, but it would appear that the graphical demands of 3D come with a great cost.

So ... that's bloody disappointing.

DAMN that sucks. I don't understand why manufacturers of any electronic like this believes this to be acceptable? Look at the batteries apple is putting in their laptops? Sack up, industry.

Remember that old estimates for the DS were vastly lower than what you'll get out of it.

Plus, I owned an N-Gage. 3-5 hours sounds almost good to me.

3.5 hours to charge for 3 hours of battery (because, be honest, we all know that 5-hour mark is when sound and brightness on the system is turned down to unusable levels)....what happened to "portable" gaming. Seems like you need to hover around a power outlet all day to enjoy this thing.

Balls. It kinda kills the portable aspect when you effectively have to be plugged into a charger the whole time while you are playing. :-3

Do we know if you can swap batteries out easily? Could be feasible to pack a spare battery or two for a long trip...

Still, this sucks.

It ultimately asks the question, how fast does it drain on the highest brightness setting since this is the lowest screen brightness. But ultimately, it will be interesting to see how many people SUDDENLY think this is acceptable now that their company is doing it. It could be worse, it could be Nomad.

About as long as my PSP battery.

Just charge it every other night, and you should be safe.

For longer sessions, just charge while you play.

While I do use my handhelds as smaller consoles instead of things to play on the go, this is still pretty bad. I'm pretty sure the PSP (and its normal battery is fucking miserable) had a better battery life than this.

I've seen laptops with worse, though. I remember reading the specs for a newer one and it said it could hold 2 hours at the most in terms of battery life.

I dunno about the rest of you guys but i saw this coming miles away, it had to happen, it's shitty but had to happen, all those supped up graphics and cool 3D effect had to have a cost somewhere. Also, what Xarias and PEICanada7 said, i'l wait for the 3DS Lite to release in a year while seeing what Sony comes up with to solve the problem in order to decide if it's worth to pick a PSP2 or not.

Not terribly surprising but still quite a bummer. I was hoping for more like 6-8 hours.

Given the game line-up though, the system is still looking strong. Fingers crossed turning the 3D off adds a little to the battery life, as that's how I intend to use it mostly.

It's probably going to be a bit better on the 3DS lite, and much better on the 3DSi. I actually don't have a problem with this. I don't use portable gaming on the go. It's basically a stay at home, handheld console. So 3 hours sitting in my bed, battery is low, plug it in, keep playing.

It's not like the battery life will ruin the awesomness of the games I'm playing. :D

Also, I'm sure if you turn the 3D slider off, you can probably save a good chunk of battery level.

The 3DS was pretty much a day one purchase for me. Now I hesitate with this news. Battery life was one of the things I really liked about my DS Lite, and really disliked about my Game Gear...

Seriously though, when I go on week long trips, I used to bring both my DS and my PSP. Then I realized if I was to get playtime out of my PSP, I would also need to bring the charger. After a little while, I would only bring the DS, simply because I didn't want to have to deal with a dead battery.

3rd party battery and car charger and all trains seem to have power outlets now. Barely changes a thing, all over this. Especially with some SSF4 or BlazBlue.

Guess I'm not getting a 3DS then, it's a shame too since I was getting hyped about it too. To people who play hand-held consoles in their home it's fine I guess, but for people who actually play 'proper' consoles at home and then switch to hand-helds on journeys (like myself) this basically makes the 3DS a no-go. Honestly 3 hours is pathetic and I don't want to be worrying about how much battery life I have left everytime I play that thing. I'll happily stick with my iPod until the 3DS lite/ 3DSi are released with better battery time, by which time hopefully developers will be making games that fully utilise what the 3DS can do.

I'm a bedside DS user anyway, so this doesn't concern me hugely. Not that portable though, particularly when you include what they were saying about holding it still to get the 3D effect.

Makes me wonder why you're expected to leave it on all day and do the whole Tagging thing while walking by random people. The next time you pull it out of your pocket expect it to be dead.

This has to be a conservative estimate or something...

3 hours with blasting speakers, full 3D, and max backlight level.

Still, it's pretty bad compared to the DS. Hopefully the 3DS Lite improves over this.

Whos guessing thats exactly what they said. Full capacity which means 3-5 hours is when 3d is on all the way and when its on its brightest settings

They also said that the battery is comparible to the dsi battery.

Mark my works 3-5=3ds all the way on, with highest brightness

6-10 hours=3d off, with highest brightness

And your right its just a gimmick which most real gamers wont give 2 shits about. Its all about the software (which is being designed 3d optional anyway.)

That's about how my original DS does, to be honest. Though the battery's old and all; my iTouch is lucky to get those kinds of time when I use it for gaming. The PSP I haven't really benchmarked, but yeah.

I'm trying to think of all of the situations where a short battery life would be a detriment, and flying on an airplane is probably the biggest one.

If you're playing a handheld for more than 3 hours a day, you either do a lot of travelling each day or you play it at home, in which case plugging it in is only a little bit cumbersome.

Still doesn't mean 3 hours is great though. It would be for a laptop but...

"graphical demands come with a great cost"

so with the psp2 being said to have graphical power of early ps3 games does this mean it will have a battery life of 30 minutes to one hour? just saying

Keep in mind, you get 5-8 hours in DS mode, so its not like its a complete wash. Obviously doing the 3D is going to eat more battery power.

As long as the system can be played while plugged in (there HAS to be an option for this otherwise i'll be severely disappointed if you can only charge with the base station.) than I think i'll be fine.

I take my DS out on trips sure, but 90% of the time I'm playing it at home. Its more or less a "private" gaming system rather than simply "portable." To play a full on console requires using a television or monitor, something that is inhierently more "public" (as in other people can walk into view, or watch you play, or might want to use the TV for other purposes. Plus who can forget the classic "screen watching" of split screen gaming?) With a handheld console everything is specifically directed at you, it can be played without disturbing anyone else around you (especially if you have headphones, otherwise just turn the volume low.) Its pretty handy if you have roommates who might work at different hours than you and you don't want to wake them up.

That's pretty crummy, but not a deal breaker for me. Most of my DS playing is at home within easy charger range. Besides, this'll open the market way up for third party batteries. Capitalism, ho!

Im not a handheld gamr, myself...does anyone ever run into issues with saving on handhelds? I mean...im sure(hopeful) that developers for the handheld games would take this into account, and im guessing you get ample warning via battery meter before it dies..but some games you need to actually go to a save point. it would be pretty frustrating to have batteries die before you get a chance to save, if you are in a new area and dont know where the save point is

With the 3D on its about the same as a PSP and without it on, its better, so I don't no why people are getting upset over this. It comes with a dock for charging, so when you get home, just pop it in the dock.

A lot of it is going to come down to how much you use it. My DS and PSP almost seem to have an infinite amount of battery life. I only use them a couple times a month unless I've got something new on the go.

My iPod on the other hand hardly lasts an hour anymore. I don't abuse it I just use it all the time. For everything but gaming anyway. The few times I do fire up one of Mr. Sterling's free app of the day recomendations the damn thing is powerless inside of 30 minutes.
