3DS gets Resident Evil Revelations demo, more on the way photo

A demo for Resident Evil Revelations has appeared on the 3DS eShop today. You should play it if you get the chance, but whatever you do, don't try the demo more than 30 times -- Reggie Fils-Aime's top men will hunt you down.

Yes, in a bizarre twist, the Revelations demo is restricted to 30 "uses." When attempting to initiate the software, a message will pop up saying as much, which has me thinking this could be standard across all demos. If so, Nintendo is really stepping it up in solidifying itself as a company unwilling or unable to adapt to straightforward concepts in this industry.

We'll find out soon enough; a demo for Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games is planned for January 26, followed by demos for Rayman Origins and Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D at a later date.

If you have to play a demo THIRTY FRICKIN' TIMES to decide whether you want the game or not, I think you're the most indecisive person on planet earth.

I actually think that's a pretty brilliant idea. If you liked it enough to play it more than 30 times, you'd probably be willing to cough up the cash to buy the real thing. If you quit before you finished the first playthrough, then you already made up your mind about it.

If you're even mildly into Resident Evil and own a 3DS, you've gotta play this. I was blown away by the graphics, the use of 3D and the gameplay itself. I wasn't even considering buying this game until I played the demo today. Nintendo needs to understand the value of a demo.

Also, 3D + survival horror = stuff jumping out at you, quite literally! >_<

The 30 use limit is total bullshit. Are they afraid you'll enjoy the 1 level of the game they let you play that you won't want to buy the full product or what?

@ramm: I echo that. Sooo fucking good. Played it sooo many times today. It's like the early games horror with good controls. Plus the unlockable hell difficulty is crazy.

Sidenote: you can keep playing over and over and as long as you don't quit, it only counts as one use. Played 3 in a row and was still at 29. Also 30 uses for a game hitting in 2 weeks is nothing to get mad about.

Are you guys seriously going to open (not play, you can replay as much times as you want just don't close the demo) the game more than 30 times? If you are, they you might as well buy the game.

Guy in the UK here. We got a Cooking Mama 4 demo as well as the Resident Evil demo. Both have a 30 use limit, so this will probably be the same across the board.

While I agree that I've yet to have a demo I've opened even *close* to 30 times before deleting it, simply having the restriction there in the first place is rather odd. I don't care much, but it's odd.

I already had this game reserved, but after the demo I'm even more excited for this game. The controls work surprisingly well, the graphics are amazing, and the atmosphere was perfect. Plus, hell mode is ridiculously hard.

I agree with Garlador on this one, it's kind of a neat idea. For instance Geometry Wars, Pac-Man Ce, and I MAED A GAM3 W1TH ZOMBIES 1N IT!!!1 were all games that had Demos that were long enough, and let me replay them enough time that I didn't feel the need to buy the game.

Actually I bought Geometry Wars and was disappointed that their wasn't much content in the full game that wasn't available in the demo.

That being said I think their past only downloadable for a few weeks Demos like they did for WiiWare was stupid, and I'm happy they brought all those demos back recently. I really hope the 3DS doesn't do that crap where you have to download these demos within the first weeks of release or your out of luck.

30 uses means every time you select the demo from the menu, once you're in you can play as much as you like and it will only count as one use...

Wait wait wait ... you're telling me ... the game im going to buy in two weeks ... I can't play a demo for it more than 30 times. A demo that is probably more than enough to convince most to buy it ... well Nintendo way to go ... you've ruined your business structure yet again.

/sarcasm.

Is this the same demo that came with Mercenaries? Because you couldn't invert your camera which was annoying and there were literally less than 5 enemies in the entire thing. Pissed me off.

I can't believe they did this game so well on the 3DS. So awesome. I really can't wait to play it, as nothing else is really coming out around that time, and 15 days will be plenty of time to destroy it before I go Vita-crazy.

The 30 uses thing is extremely archaic and Nintendo. But this is Nintendo. Honestly, I'm surprised they even have DEMOS. Then again, I don't expect much from them these days.

To all you jerks making be feel like I wasted a part of my childhood (kidding!), I used to play demos A LOT back when I was kid, on a 166MHz P1 PC. Couldn't really afford games back then, so replaying demos was awesome.

Anyway, I'm liking RE. Going to get it for sure someday.

@Magnalon:

Is it even a just waste of effort to complain about it? I'm just going to reilliterate what everyone has already said. Who plays a demo 30 times? The game comes out in two weeks! Maybe, just maybe, there is a reason for Nintendo making a limit? Oh no, of course not. Everything Nintendo does is a mistake, or else it's a surprise?!

This kind of attitude toward any developer makes me sick. I'm sure that when they had AN ACTUAL MEETING TO DISCUSS THE CHOICE, they knew wheat they were doing instead of "Duhur, our systems are traditional, we don't need demos."

Have some faith in people. I know that they are total idiots when it comes to everything. (sarcasm) Seriously! If they are total idiots, they're total idiots who make games that would be impossible to be made by total idiots.

...

Or maybe they want you to stop playing the demo and eventually buy the game. Who the fuck cares if there's a 30 play limit? What kind of person even plays a demo 30 times before playing the full version?

Seriously, I'd expect an ignorant statement like that from Jimbo.

I think a 30 plays limit is much better than a timed expiration of the demo, like Sonic Generations and a few other games had on the PS3/360. Like many others have said, 30 plays is plenty. If you still haven't decided if you want to play buy the game or not at that point, then you're never going to decide.

A demo is not a free gift. It's not something you are entitled to as a member of the human race. It is like a free sample from the lady with the plate full of little pieces of chicken standing in front of the Chinese food restaurant at the food court.

She is not giving you the chicken to feed you, or because she likes you, or she thinks you deserve free chicken. She is giving it to you in hopes that you will like the way it tastes, and will go on to buy one of the lunch specials.

If after 30 pieces of free chicken you still don't know if you want the special, she has every reason to cut you and your chicken filled face right off.

On topic: This demo was awesome. And people say the 3DS is underpowered and a slight upgrade from the DS. Ha I laugh in your general direction. Vita looks great, but I think games like this and Mario in 3D are more visually impressive than HD games on the go. Obviously that's just my opinion but before the 3DS I didn't know I was 3D enthusiast. I still haven't seen a 3D movie but for games I think its the real deal.

Also, its takes up about 1100 of my 9000 remaining blocks. All the better to force it obsolence and push me to just delete the dang thing when its used up.

I love free stuff as much as the next guy, but kids gotta eat, right?

30 plays is certainly more than enough. I can't think of any demo I've played more than four times. By that point I've made up my mind about the game.

My only real problem with this demo (and I suppose, the full game most likely) is the limited control scheme options. I remember on the PSX and for most of the last console generation, control options were free and we could map anything to any button we wanted. Why is it this generation has seen fit to limit us to Type A/B/C (and D if we're lucky) controls? Sensitivity used to come as a slider, now it's all 'normal', 'fast'. I don't know when or why developers started thinking that taking away options was a good thing, but it's not. I want to like this demo, I really do, but having to use the circle pad for movement is killing it for me. A game with spacing and combat so tight needs precise, digital movement control (not to mention how uncomfortable it is to use the circle pad and the L and R buttons). No d-pad movement, no sale.

This Demo is really impressive. It looks fantastic, nearly good enough to be on an HD console. I thought the controls would suck, but they actually worked great. It was scary too, they really nailed it. I'm suprised at how well everyhing worked. My only complaint is that even with headphones on I felt it was a little too quiet.

Bring on next week, the game is fantastic and I can't wait to try more. The only thing I'm worried about, as per all console looking games on a handheld, is the length.

But honestly? Got more scared in 10 minutes then I did of three years playing Resi 5. Get this game. If you have a slight inkling towards RE, horror games, action games, or just good games, get it.

I liked the demo. I wonder how the game will play with Circle Pad Pro because the controls are pretty comfortable as they are and you can customize them. The gyro aiming is responsive and Ive been using it throughout the demo. I only wish I could aim with the stylus. And the 3D effects looks decent but gives the game horrible aliasing.

Awesome demo! Just the right balance of action, horror and exploration.

And I love the gyro controls for aiming. I can see why some people won't because you have to physically move around and it's a bit hard to play with both gyro controls and 3D on. But I found them very immersive, and it made aiming much faster and easier.

I can understand the 30 use thing for a portable demo, my nephew had a PSP and his parents just loaded it up with demos he was perfectly happy to play forever. The 30 use thing is probably a reaction to that kind of thing that I know some other parents do as well. I can't see anyone really running through a demo 30 times, I played the NHL'12 demo loads but I doubt I did it more than 30.

I didnt make it very far in my first attempt, got massacred by the dude in the header picture...ran out of bullets and stabbed the fucker like 20 times to no avail. The controls are done well, i just have to get used to conserving bullets.

Definitely a good buy but my monies have to go elsewhere.
