Steel Dipshit: Did you just criticize my grammar? What are you, twelve?
And what the hell are you even talking about concerning the third party developer thing? That is not even close to the fucking point, it is that this game is a glorified rip-off of Zelda (as certainly as Saint's Row is GTA, if not more so from what I've seen), and it shows nothing that it is a parody. You didn't even argue what I said...I didn't say anything about Sony telling a developer what to make. I'm saying they would love nothing more than to have a system exclusive that is pretty much a Zelda game. Quit reading so much into my comments, dicksmoke.
Christ, you Sony fanboys are awful. I said I'd still probably buy the thing because as I mentioned twice now, I own a PS3, but I offer the slightest criticism and holy shitballs, I'm a 360 fanboy. Jim was right, Sony fanboys are the worst.
Seriously man, chill out. What's your problem? STFUAJPG if it's your "mantra."
"what the hell are you even talking about concerning the third party developer thing?" You said that it was Sony that wanted a Zelda rip-off when Sony has no involvement in the title except for being the company that happens to produce the system that 3d Dot Game Heroes is going to be on. I'll agree with you that this game is a Zelda Rip-off ,but totally left out (or didn't understand I can't tell which) that I was correcting you on your belief of Sony wanting a Zelda game.
"I didn't say anything about Sony telling a developer what to make."
Oh really? Well then what the hell do you call this comment?
"This is Sony trying to get a Zelda style game on their console without calling it Zelda."
If Sony wanted a Zelda game then SCEA Santa Monica or Naughty Dog would've been making it. And tell me, what fanboy statement did I make? And no there are no fanboys jumping on you. you made an opinion that myself and dwolf are allowed to respond to. If you can't handle a response to an opinion then shut off your computer and get rid of your internet, and don't interact with society because, news flash, people debate opinions all the time. Disagreeing with you doesn't make me a fanboy, it makes me opposed to your opinion. Calling me a fanboy for doing so make you look like an asshat.
"Steel Dipshit: Did you just criticize my grammar? What are you, twelve?"
Nice. Because the population of twelve year old children is known to correct spelling and grammar. And yes I did criticize you grammar. Nice insult by the way. Steel Dipshit. Shitstation? Console agnostic my ass. I've seen better attempts at insults on Wii Fit.
"This game is basically Zelda with a different coat of paint. "
Well it IS a parody... kind of the point... and that new coat of paint is still highly innovative in and of itself
"it is that this game is a glorified rip-off of Zelda, and it shows nothing that it is a parody."
Please clarify why this game is a rip-off and not a parody...
one of the things that PROVES that this is an obvious attempt at parody is the fact that EVERYONE can recognize it as a zelda clone easily... everything about this game screams Zelda... unlike games like Saints rows where the developers constantly try to defend themselves from accusation of "GTA clone" and insist that their game is different, From Software makes no attempt to hide that there are similarities to Zelda... Saints row was riding the GTA bandwagon, while this game is poking fun with a familiar title... fact is, they could have made this game in MANY ways, and could have tried to distance themselves from zelda or do something original (the developer has made plenty of games in the past), but they chose zelda on purpose
Really the only thing i can assume you mean when you say "it's not a parody" is because the videos lack humor which is a common trait of parody...
first off unless you can READ japanese, then it's obvious you won't see much in terms of humor in these videos IF they are trying to show that... all things considered, humor in this game will likely be driven mostly by dialogue...
Second of all, the visual style itself seems like a MASSIVE joke in and of itself; it's a hilarious concept... look at the original super mario; what did nintendo come up with when they made that game 3D? the new super mario bros on the DS... a true conversion from old generation to new generation... this game takes the same concept of taking a retro 2D game and rendering it with modern 3D technology but instead of doing what nintendo did, they take the concept much more literal... the visual style itself almost pokes fun at the notion of taking old retro games and remaking them for modern consoles
Not to mention there are also those videos of the player using a sword that covers the entire screen... frankly, it's so ridiculous that it's enough to tell me that this game is gonna take itself with a good deal of humor
My opinion that it is a Zelda ripoff is a "shitty attitude"? OK, kind of a bound, but whatevs. I'm merely criticizing the title, you're assuming I'm outraged because it's a Zelda clone. Far as I'm concerned, you seem more bugged about my opinion than I am about the game. If I said I'd consider buying the thing, I wouldn't call it such a shitty attitude if I'm that on the fence. That's pretty good in my book as far as I'm concerned, given my overall lack of interest of the market overall (I've bought maybe six games in the past two years, only 3 that I've kept).
"Shitstation?" Yes, I've been calling it that since day one Steel Shitface, and don't you worry your PS3 fanboy heart, I play it still to this day. Maybe if you've been around the site/forums more and realize you don't take everything I say so seriously or literally you wouldn't get so uptight about an offhand remark from me that meant nothing. Whatever Cochise, keep steamin', that's all Sony fanboys are good for.
Monte: "Please clarify why this game is a rip-off and not a parody... "
I already have, but again, the problem I have is everything I've seen thus far seems way too close to Zelda gameplay that just writing it off as parody seems to be allowing the developers to get away with a Zelda clone...there are more inventive ways to parody than this. This is just taking Zelda, making it look weird with it's block graphics, and calling it good. Every element of gameplay seems to replicate damn near exactly like Zelda, from the items I mentioned to the screen movement to the dungeon layout. As you said, seeing what the text actually says could very well put this all in a more favorable context for the game, but everything I've seen thus far says Zelda with block graphics. Nobody has really explained why it is a parody to me besides "OH IT'S OBVIOUS" until you have thus far. The other two have been reactionary Sony fanboys. Ultimately, though I'm still not convinced, I'm not stubborn with this kind of thing. If the dialogue can frame the game as a parody more effectively, then I would be more than willing to lay to rest that criticism of mine.
I just don't buy the whole "it plays exactly like the old game so thus it is a parody"...after a few hours--at most--of the parody novelty wearing off, you suddenly find yourself playing the exact same game as you did on the SNES, down to the boomerangs and chickens and hookshots and etc. I just think to lift and so egregiously mimic the gamemplay mechanic, which to me is the most important element through a game's entirety, that dismissing it as parody isn't a fair shake to the original creators. Anyway, glad to see you're not being a massive dick about it...I miss the days when one could have somewhat decent debate on the frontpage. Yes, this game looks cool, and could be ridiculously fun, I just hope they really do the parody justice and not just a blatant excuse to make a Zelda game.
Well i would have to ask how would you go about making a parody of a video game...
i haven't see much in the way of video game parodies of video games... only movie parodies
I mean, looking at shows... on youtube, you can find "abridged" fan-dubbed versions of numerous animes... they follow the general story of the anime closely but insert all kinds of jokes, twist circumstances, and poke fun at anything... i've seen some flashes for video games; a person fave would be "the real legend of zelda"... again, follows the game's story, but they made Link into a clumsy, cowardly, halfwit which makes it hilarious... these are seen as parodies
Frankly, if i was gonna make a parody of a video game, i know the first thing i would be doing is coping the gameplay... if i wanted to for instance make a parody of the original final fantasy, my game would probably turn out like 8-bit theater but with FF gameplay... i let the gameplay and certain image elements link the game back to original that i am parodying, but let the story and characters be the thing that drives the parody aspect of the game... for a zelda parody, i'd do what we have seen these guys doing (though i would not have even thought of 3D pixels) and then i'd add in tons of jokes; take everything about zelda and make fun of it...
So ya... how would you parody zelda, without ripping it off?
@Davoidbot
well we'd have to ask the developers that
We know that From Software can make games as they are most well known for Armored Core series, and the upcoming Demon souls; so if they wanted to do something original they could have... Hell i'd have to ask why anyone would think that such a company would even NEED to rip-off zelda, when they have proven they can do otherwise... blatant rip offs is a thing for amateurs, and band wagon jumpers... we Also can tell that while From Software develops for multiple consoles, they seem to prefer keeping each game as an exclusive to one console
So why is this on PS3 instead of wii...
Well normally i'd bring up wii graphical limitations, but i doubt that this is the case...
So we may have to consider the developers relationship with Nintendo... it doesn't seem to devleop often for nintendo, with only one game out for the wii and a few for the DS... one possibly could be simply, they don't like the wii and it's gimmicky controls, and thus went to sony... another possibility is that they offered the idea to nintendo to publish, but nintendo rejected it; they'd be happy to have it on their console, but wouldn't want to invest actual money into making it... or maybe they shopped around for a publisher and Sony was the only one who made them an offer for the game... really no telling, it's something only the developer can tell us; we may just find out as the question is bound to come up during an interview one of these days
Bottom line is that a parody is a humorous send-off of something else.
As far as I can see this isn't humorous, therefore cannot be called a parody. It's as simple as that.
Dialogue aside (seing as we can't read it), this currently stands as an imitation, pure and simple, and while I don't see that as a proble per se, it is still a little cheap to take someone else's game and make money from it.
You are exactly right.
Spoofs and rip offs are two similar things. They both relate to another objects or subject.
Spoofs are humorous gags, rip offs are just rip offs.
There is nothing funny about this game at all. NOTHING. There fore it is a huge rip off.
"Maybe if you've been around the site/forums more and realize you don't take everything I say so seriously or literally you wouldn't get so uptight about an offhand remark from me that meant nothing"
Now you tell me :) Well then now I can just ignore anything you say on this site and basically pretend that you don't exist.
And once again all you've done is say the word fanboy, fanboy, fanboy, without really arguing what was said. If you can't carry a debate then don't make statements that will cause them. In the words of Willa Wokna,"You Lose. You Get Nothing. Good Day Sir."
Again i point out...
-the visual style itself is like a massive joke... the premise of the game is a king wanted his 8-bit world to be 3D; they weren't quite happy with the results and now you're on a quest to change it back... it's like they took the the common idea of remaking retro games in modern 3d graphics, but took the idea to it's literal extreme
-being able to wield a massive sword that takes up the entire screen is incredibly ridiculous... obvious this game is not meant to be taken seriously
-NPCs usually crack jokes depending on whether you say "Yes" or "No" to their queries. It's been highly recommended that players always answer "No" for the best results.
-Spelunker can be unlocked as a main character. and just like spelunker he dies the moment he drops off any kind of ledge... that is definitely a joke unlockable
So tell me, what the hell makes you think this game is NOT gonna be humorous?
Not to mention again asking why a developer who has been successful in making its own game would even NEED to rip off someone else's work... rip offs are for amateurs, and bandwagon jumpers (and the wagon for the old zelda passed almost 2 decades ago)
They probably don't NEED to rip-off Zelda and there can be a many reasons why they chose to develop for the Ps3, but the point still stands that from what they were showing people about the game so far, that it does look like a Zelda rip-off. I do know this though, it definitely can not be an homage to Zelda because if you liked something that someone made, the last thing you would want to do is give money to people who probably want the creators of the original to get out of the industry.
