Man, if you thought the Zelda-plagiarism accusations were bad before, I cannot wait until the Nintendo loyalists check this new video out. Yes, it's time for another 3D Dot Game Heroes video (after the jump), and this one displays its Zelda influence like never before, with music seemingly designed entirely to piss off those who hate the fact that this game is a parody-flavored homage to the classic adventure series.

As well as the Hyrulian opening, this new footage also shows off the character editor, as well as what looks to be the very opening section of the game. Here, the Zelda influence runs wild. The main hero strikes a Link-esque "item get" pose, and as he walks around the world map, the screen scrolls in very much the same way as the classic top-down NES and SNES adventures.

As the character goes on and acquires what looks to be a Master Sword, it becomes clear that From Software wants you to know it's taking its cues from Zelda. It's so blatant that it is obviously not an attempt merely to copy the game and hope nobody notices. This game knows what it's doing, and it knows we know.

It's really interesting to see, though. How far are they gong to go with this? I think we'll need to see English dialog before we can see just how much of a parody this game will be. At the moment, I admit one could be forgiven for thinking it's straight up plagiarism at first glance, but a little research uncovers From's intent. Whatever happens, it's going to be really interesting to see how this goes over in the West.

[Thanks, Crimsondragon]

I'm bothered by the fact that your sword can apparently take up half of the screen. Seems like combat is going to be WAY too easy.

I'm a bit sick of seeing Japanese trailers released in Western territories. If I were making a game, I'd hire translators to work on the project while making the game. This could be the best parody I've ever seen, but I wouldn't know because I can't read the damn words.

Looks nice though...

Anyone else have the urge to abuse the character creation tool to make a Link replica? That would be hillarious.

Um duck...it isn't a japanes trailer being released in western territories. It's a Japanese trailer released for the japanese for a game that might not even be localized by the US

After Twilight Princess, a Zelda rip-off interests me far more than a true entry in the series.

Why did everyone hate Twilight Princess so much?

Because it's not Ocarina of Time? It was a decent title on it's own. Sure, not AAA flawless, but decent.

This game isn't even announced for the West. It's a Japenese trailer for Japan. Knowing is half the battle buddy.

I agree with you whole-heartedly, but after seeing so many Fanboy Fridays, I refuse to ever use the term AAA. Oh NO! I used it!

In other news, this game is one more reason I'm getting a PS3.

Parody is fine, but if the gameplay is as bland as it appears, then we might just have another Matt Hazard on our hands.

Of course they're trying to create controversy so people will actually pay attention to what they're saying. It was an example of what the game is capable of... not a rip off and since I loved Zelda, why would I be pissed at an obvious homage to one of my favorite games of all time?

True! I only use it very sparingly. I suppose I should have used the term "10/10".

Twilight Princess was a good game, it just didn't live up to everyone's bullshit standards. Fuck them, I like it. No Majora's Mask, but I like it.

Anyway, this is the first I've really looked into anything about this game, but...how is this a 'parody'? Because it has weird graphics? Almost everything I've seen is Zelda, through and through. Because it is so obvious that they're copying Zelda that it is clearly parody? That makes no sense, and not really defensible in a copyright infringement case. Someone educate me, I obviously haven't done my research.

@goldengamerXero:

I'm sure that's exactly why they put it in the game. And you'll probably be able to change your name to Link too. And while they're at it, they should just let us name the princess, the villain, the horse, the land, & maybe have a theme song editor too. :D

I wish more devs would use power of the PS3/360 to make games that look like this. Current gen consoles still can't depict "organic" characters in a convincing way, but as this and LittleBigPlanet prove, they can bring inanimate objects to life with total integrity.

This is the first PS3 game I've ever seen that I want just for the way it looks.

Oh wait...not a single thing about this game is funny or shows humor...hmmm...well it is a ZELDA rip off!

You can not base an entire game off of another game, even if it is a "humorous spoof"

Nothing funny about the game. It is just a pure rip off.

I hope Nintendo sues the developers asses off.

I wonder if this game had a more standard graphic style, even if 2D. Maybe people would be less forgiving of the "parody"? Maybe even not interested in it?

Another annoying thing is the clear double standard of some comments that basically say "I don't like Nintendo games but I like games based on their games".

I would understand the arguments that this game is supposed to be a parody or spoof of zelda, if it looked even remotely funny. But it does not, it just looks like a standard 2d rpg that they made 3d, kind of. The graphics seem interesting, but the gameplay looks pretty typical and I personally only like parodies that are funny.

There have been many games in the past that imitate Zelda's style. The Neutopia games on Virtual Console or Crusader of Centy on Sega Genesis/Megadrive immediately come to mind.

Anyway, Nintendo has abandoned Zelda in this style. The past few Zelda games have shown that Nintendo is never going to release a "retro" Zelda game again, instead opting for 3D games with crappy camera controls or 2.5D games that use gimmicky, hard to play control schemes.

So, instead of complaining about plagiarism (it is not, by the way), you should be happy that someone is releasing a game in a style that oldschool fans can enjoy. Unless mom and dad won't shell out the cash for a PS3. Then you should be angry and post on the internet about it.

I really don't see the problem is with this game. It's obviously a parody/tribute to old 8-bit action RPGS LIKE Zelda. You all do remember there were other 8-bit games like Zelda, don't you?

*cough cough* CRYSTALIS *cough* *cough*

I think those of you who are taking this game balls to the walls need to take a chill pill. It looks creatively fun-like an RPG made out of LEGOS. Those of you who have lost your imaginative touch with video games need to play the next big epic RPG with flashy graphics and zero innovation.

"Those of you who have lost your imaginative touch with video games need to play the next big epic RPG with flashy graphics and zero innovation." Ironic to bring up innovation concerning this game. This game is basically Zelda with a different coat of paint.

The game looks good, for sure, and I might pick it up since I have jack shit on the Shitstation anymore, but convincing yourself this isn't a rip off of Zelda is fucking foolish. Goddamn chickens, boomerangs, hookshots, spinning sword attack, 'item get' celebratory pose, dungeon design, scrolling environments, pegasus boots, which all behave damn near IDENTICALLY to their Zelda counterparts? Yeah, parody my ass. This is Sony trying to get a Zelda style game on their console without calling it Zelda. There is parody, and there is
"OK, this is what the game IS". Conker had parody. This does not.

"Anyway, Nintendo has abandoned Zelda in this style. " So?

the last time that Nintendo tried to sue Sony the Playstation was the result. Look what that did to the N64's sales. Nintendo probably wants to sue From Software so badly, but previous history shows that Nintendo can't take Sony in a courtroom.

What would they sue for anyways? Use of flying chickens? Having a top down perspective? Use of an 8-Bit style not seen since the Game Boy days? Get real. You'd have to be an idiot to think that there would be any grounds for a court case. as -PL- said

"There have been many games in the past that imitate Zelda's style. The Neutopia games on Virtual Console or Crusader of Centy on Sega Genesis/Megadrive immediately come to mind." Which is too true. I'd also like to add Beyond Oasis to that list as well as Fatal Labyrinth.

This isn't the first time that this has happened and it won't be the last.

@Poopface Morty
I'm lovin the criticism, but you do realize this game isn't made by Sony right? It's made by a 3rd party developer that has made games for the 360. I find your argument is more heated because you want to play this game but don't own a ps3, amirite?

@ h5e5l5l5o5
Dude seriously? Why would you want a great developer to be sued. I don't see this developer as a huge influence and super power within the market, but I do see them as a giant in releasing quality games as of late. You seriously don't even deserve to call yourself a gamer, and you should just join forces with those religious fantatics fighting videogames in general. That or get that dick-sized stick up your butt surgically removed and lighten up.

Yeah... because Sony totally can tell Third Party Developers to make what they want right? That's like saying Microsoft told Realtime Worlds to make a game like GTA but call it Crackdown instead.
