3D Dot Game Heroes screenshots: Not the bees! photo

As someone who is sick to death of modern Japanese RPGs and all their overfamiliar tropes, I find the idea of 3D Dot Game Heroes -- a game that mercilessly parodies Japanese RPGs and all their overfamiliar tropes -- to be thoroughly refreshing. There isn't enough parody in gaming, and this one looks like it'll be awesome.

Here are a bunch of new screenshots for the game, courtesy of Andria Sang. The blocky art style has been made beautiful on the PS3, demonstrating that simplicity can often look as good as, if not better than, your average gritty explosions-and-lighting-effects AAA game.

Really looking forward to seeing how this game progresses. If done right, it could be absolute genius.

This game is starting to really pique my interest. Is it being released outside of Asia?

Im going to agree with you on the simple style issue. I just played two demos, one for Wet and one for Mini Ninjas. Wet has a whole lot of graphical flourish that comes off as totally garish and irritating, while M.N. was just really pleasant and enjoyable.

I think that a lot of developers got really into physics, and particle effects in this generation, because that was a hot new thing that new consoles can do really well, but those things were uses kind of excessively. It's cool to see a game like 3DDGH employ some artistic temperament and use effects wisely.

I really want to see this game in action. Weird how there are no videos yet.

I love it already and I will deffinitely buy it if it comes to this side of the pond. Honestly, how awesome is that? Dragon Quest, Zelda, Final Fantasy, there are nods to everything. Will deffinitely keep my japanesetake-on-european middle-ages-game hunger under control until the next Zelda and Dragon Quest hit the Wii.

I really miss old fashioned action RPGs... Even Zelda seems to have lost most of its charm. The series needs some serious innovations, and the looking back 3DDGG proposes is probably what Zelda Team needs to put things in perspective.

Does look good, is it PS3 only?

Looks more like the first Zelda then it does a JRPG.

If this is as good as or better than Demon's Souls, Atlus better bring it over ASAP. Also, looks more like Zelda or Secret of Mana than Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy.

If you want to see another clever parody of the JRPG genre, check out "The typical JRPG" (which I believe was covered in an installment of the Rev. Anthony's Indie Nation.)
