360

A few days ago, our own Dale North gave us the skinny on the Microsoft version of the famed Wiimote, as lazy gamers groaned and liberally applied their palms to their faces. It seems the craze to jump all over the living room while you game is not going away, and those of us that don't like it may have to try a bit harder to avoid it in future. If you love your Wiimote, however, you'll be pleased to meet Newton, which is the codename for the new controller. It may change, so don't get too attached just yet!

It seems as if Microsoft licensed patents from a company called Gyration, who make motion-sensing mice for computer use that you probably haven't heard of. Gizmodo made the mock version in the pic above, which is easily imaginable as the final product, although I personally hope they go for a different color (black would be cool.)

Both controllers have built in mics, but somehow envisioning use of this controller with Live's services makes me think Microsoft could have a leg up on the concept in the long run, even though it is obviously copied from Nintendo. Only time will tell, as we won't see the controller in the flesh until later this year.

[Via Gizmodo - Thanks, Adam]

I'll give my real comment as soon as I'm done "groaning and liberally applying my palm to my face."

LOL?

Prepare to be sued by Nintendo's yakuza-ninja-lawyers.

I would love to see the newton copy the force feedback mouse I saw on display at E3 some time back.

Microsoft isn't stupid. They've seen how the WiiMote is, know it flaws, copy it, and then create something better. That's what Microsoft does.

Soooo with PS3 having motion control sixaxis and XBOX getting a "Xiimote" if you will...why is Nintendo here? they have been robbed of their original idea and it seems like everyone can do it better than them. I really hope the core games for Nintendo allow it to hold on for the long fight.

I hate lawsuits for this kind of crap so much. but I really think Nintendo should sue Microsoft for this little bit of trickery.

They are realeaseing this controller because Microsfot knows their target audience.
After years of research they realized their target is a bucnh of teenagers who like talking shit over a microphone and FAP.
So there is no brainer there, create a controller that resembles waggling and a phalic shape.
TA DA! System seller there.

"they realized their target is a bunch of teenagers who like talking shit over a microphone and FAP."

Pretty much, now you will hear things like "I'll rape you with my new phalic/waggle controller" more often.

Joking aside, I really don't think MS needs this. Their console is just fine as it is, problems aside. Good library of games, good online service, but sometimes questionable hardware. Does it really need something like this? I sure as hell don't think so.

I agree with Mxyzptlk, I think theyll try push Banjo along with this device.

They won't replace their current controller, and thats why this is destined to fail, and maybe become a topic on RFGO episode 1508.

@DOOM I appreciate the fanboy hate you speak of, but could you enlighten us as to why you hate the wiimote??

lame that there bitin off the wii, but im not a big fan of the motion sensor anyways

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say the PS3 stole the idea for motion sensing. They had this idea in place for the PS2 early on, but it never got pushed, and was never really publicized. Both the SixAxis sensing and the Wiimote rely on motion sensing, but in two different ways, so while they're similar, I wouldn't say either is a copy of the other.

Now Microsoft, on the other hand, is just performing a blatant ripoff. Geez Microsoft, aren't you familiar with this territory already? A little thing called DOS? Ah well, they know how to make money as a company, but honestly, I have to agree with the majority posting here, that the 360 is still going strong enough to not need this, but with PS3 sales rising (PS3 outsold the 360 during this quarter) and with Wii sales high in demand but short in supply, this could be something that draws those soccer moms to the 360, especially if they bundle it with the cheapo system pack.

Who knows? When Microsoft is backed into a corner, they strike hard and true, it's when they're in the open that they make mistakes... like Vista (why Microsoft??? XP was finally working extremely well.. and then.. Vista....)

*weeps for Microsoft and their never-ending schemes to generate even more profit*

...so if I drop an apple on the Newton, it will get better/more intelligent/a new perspective on how gravity works.

Or maybe it'll just leave an apple-shaped mark.

That's actually a pretty nice mock up, but it doesn't change the fact that this is just an utterly appalling idea. The 360's target audience seems to have developed an unhealthy contempt for waggle, and the console fundamentally just isn't designed to appeal to the "expanded audience", and this is not going to change that. If MS is actually developing this in earnest, I think they're only pumping R&D funds into a complete lost cause.

Whoa, Microsoft. That's gonna be such an original idea! Lemme guess: using the controller in some highly generic game will get you a 1000 achievement points! Oh, the achievement attics will just gobble that up.

Shut up. If you don't like it, don't buy it. You should not complain about anything you DO NOT have to put yourself through.
