360 version of Rage will not be 'altered' despite having two discs photo
Yesterday 1UP reported that the Xbox 360 version of id Software’s upcoming shooter Rage would have fairly significant changes made to it because of limited disc space. The information stems from lead designer at id, Tim Willits, who told an audience at Austin Game Developers Conference that the Xbox 360 version would have “altered” content that would inhibit the way players experience Rage’s story. Also, he confirmed that Rage would have two discs for the Xbox 360 and smaller exploration based areas called wastelands as a recourse to the smaller disc-based format.

Since then the story has changed fairly significantly. Willits spoke to Shacknews about the altered content and flatly denied that any changes would be made:
There was NO CONTENT removed from RAGE because of the 360--NONE AT ALL. Moving from multiple wastelands into fewer but larger wastelands was a far better decision and is actually giving us more gameplay in the game.

What’s interesting is that id is maintaining a position that any change being made because of technical issues will be made across the board. If true, that means PC players will have to suffer the consequences of the Xbox 360’s limited DVD space.

It’s certainly depressing, isn’t it PC gamers? I had the opportunity to ask my cat, Hannibal, about the change. He wasn’t too pleased (I could ascertain this by watching his tail) but said that the changes were "completely fair and rational." He also said that he enjoys switching discs like it's 1996.

That is pretty lame, but I'll reserve judgment till the game comes out.

This is an issue that's come back only as the current gen is reaching its limitations.

XBox ruined more than a few of my favourite IPs because the developers thought to develop for it and port to PC (rather than the other way around)... So goodbye Thief 3 (Sorry, Deadly Shadows, there were no prequels! Apparently), goodbye Deus Ex 2, goodbye Scrapland!

The current gen has a good while yet before it enforces really detrimental limits, but it's coming!

who cares about PC...Pc gaming is so dead...besides RTS's MMOG's, valve and blizzard.

Also who cares about changing a disc...i can't believe this is actually discussed as a problem.

Pc gaming is so far from dead, rbrooks you should be slapped.

Steam is bigger than ever, anything valve does is 90% on PC, and extremely popular. Everything Blizzard does will be exclusive to PC, things like Starcraft 2 and Diablo III will continue to make PC gaming popular. Not to mention Spore, which just sold a shit ton of copies in just a weekend. Consider yourself slapped sir.

I dunno rbrooks...I consider any trip in the direction of the TV that involves more than moving my arm to be quite dangerous. In fact I am still playing the first game I put in the 360, as the thought of going near my Xbox terrifies me.

@ rbrooks: and FPS and third person shooters and RPG's etc. but if you take everything that is doing well on the PC away then yeah it's so dead! :|

So what, is the full install going to be like 10 GB? Oh wait, who cares.

I like the fact the people don't realize that blizzard will eventually branch into the console market.

Next gen console, blizzard MMO, I could see that happening.

So, why not give XB360 owners the option of installing to the hard drive instead of swapping discs, if indeed swapping discs is such an issue? And then store in the game save file where to look for data? I guess that makes too much sense.

It's because of reasons like this that Microsoft should have pushed HD DVD more than it did. Even thought it failed for a movie medium, it could have been excellent as a game medium with 30 GB per disc.

I have not heard of this RAGE game before now....sounds interesting but I do hope if it's good that they don't botch the PC version.

I dunno...I'd rather switch a disc once than wait through a depressingly long install.

2 discs?
RAAAAAAGEEEE!!!!!

Meh honestly swapping discs actually has its charms though...
Gives you feel of progress =). It does more than that percentage number on your save file.

I don't see a reason why content should change due...2 discs?

Lots of environments of possibly uneven quality, or fewer environments with more time and attention spent on each? I know which one I prefer. As for disc swapping, the update that allows installations should be out by then if it irks people that much - hopefully they will have the good sense to only require the first disc be in the drive.

See? It's not necessarily bad and I even play games on my PC!

"PC players will have to suffer the consequences of the Xbox 360’s limited DVD space."

I don't understand, do you think PC games don't come on DVDs or something?

@Timmeh

yeah but it's compressed much more as you install before you play, the files for 360 have to be readable from the get go

Also, PC's can have installs, which xbox360 cannot depend on.

Carmack was pissed and said Xbox version will have lower detail wherever is far away from actual plot, and PS3 would'n have that problem. MS was probably quick to make sure that 360 version was no different than others (as in, dumbed down ps3 version)

Damn Xbox 360 and ps3 and there lame ass hardware that is repackaged old ass PC hardware from like 2004, is screwing over PC games since they now have to make games "FOR EVERy platform to make a profit."

and I am serious about that PS3 and xbox 360 games remind me of looking like old ass PC games.

Let's wait until the game is any good before people get up in arms about 360 being responsible for gimping the game.

id hasn't done anything worth while since Quake III Arena.
