3 million kids are 'pathological gamers' ... apparently photo

It's been a while since children were used to make videogames sound terrifying, but luckily the State University of Iowa has delivered, with a study making the claim that 8.5% of American children are "pathological gamers." The use of pathological is important, because it makes them sound like serial killers, which is great for whipping idiot parents up into a frenzy.

Although the study only surveyed 1,178 youths, The Washington Post has suggests from the evidence that three million children are now playing videogames by compulsion, helping to make the results sound even more frightening.

"I thought this was parental histrionics - that kids are playing a lot and parents don't understand the motivation, so they label it an addiction," said Douglas Gentile, who conducted the study. "It turns out that I was wrong. For some kids, they play in such a way that it becomes out of balance. And they're damaging other areas of their lives, and it isn't just one area, it's many areas."

Gentile was quick to point out that this doesn't make videogames "bad," but obviously this is going to be more fuel for the anti-game fire, with people unable to realise that it's not videogames causing the problem, but merely providing a symptom. Coming up with terms like "pathological gamer" isn't going to help the situation, though.

Why is it that video games are still regarded as some sort of counter culture or taboo subject? I'll tell you why. It is because baby jesus didn't have video games... if it isn't in the bible it isn't good. Well actually I would have to guess it is because it is still a young type of media.

Hey before you guys get all up in arms about "8.5 percent of 1,178 = 3.5 million" you may want to take a statistics class. Or hey, if you don't have that much time on your hands, you can always wikipedia it, I'll even do it for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sampling_(statistics).

Come on guys, don't be knee-jerk about studies like this. The problem isn't video games, it's too much video games. I have a hard time believing that all you gamers don't know some kids out there who seriously need to play a few less hours worth of games.

It's called behavioral addiction and even now they aren't sure if it's really an addiction at all, or just a form of OCD. Because you just have to finish that game, of course!

Still, Gentile may be moderate in his claims but he is part of the Craig Anderson group of "violent content in media = violent behavior" US social scientists. Boo!!

Statistics or not, extrapolating is rarely a good thing. All it does is increase your margin of error.

I would love to see research like this on people who read books. If it turns out 3.5 million people read too much, how many people would give a damn?

Games simply is the latest in a long line of media panics. Conventional press usually latch on to these like a leech and don't stop sucking untill a new one appears. There are numerous well researched books out there about video game culture. But of course the press always knows better and those do not exist.
Maybe they should put a basic statistics curriculum in high school math. That way people at least Should know better. (I don't live in America so please correct me if they actually Do give this in mandatory classes and the general consumer is more gullible than I thought.)

Some people read for hours a day, some people surf the net for hours a day, some people listen to music, some exercise, some work, some play. What the fuck kind of study is this? "3 out of 4 people like to do stuff sometimes". Lame. Kids are the same way as adults, and ~2000 person sample is highly inadequate.

I'd just like to point out that "Pathological" has nothing to do with "serial killers"... the definition of that word simply means "related to disease" or "indicative of disease". You could argue that "pathological" has connotations of psychological issues, but you would most likely be wrong.

ShadeWithin: You must have missed the sarcasm there. I am pointing out that "pathological" was used because of how the word sounds, not because of what the word actually means.

I'm...almost inclined to believe this gross extrapolation. Of course, as Professor Pew pointed out, we have to call in their definition of "addiction" in the study, especially since it's not related to something chemical like with drugs.

After reading the Washington Post article, I feel that the study was absolutely fine, admitting that they didn't get all the answers. It's just a matter of time before someone tries to take this info WAAAY out of context.

Maybe now parents will get their children outside to get some excercise instead of sitting in front of a damn tv all day getting fat. No wonder there is so much obesity in this country.

I'm a hardcore gamer, and I take it seriously, but there is a limit to how long you can sit around being lazy.
