It's like beating a kid and then starving them for eating delicious cookies you accidentally left on the table. I mean, seriously... is that kind of reaction really necessary?
ANet made the best move possible. What's a more fitting punishment for a child who takes something that doesn't belong to them? To just take it alway and ground them? Or to make them return the item and apologize for their behavior? ANet chose the latter.
Getting to play the game agaon by ANets good graces in this case will leave a lasting impression. If ANet had just rolled back those characters, it wouldn't have been as profound a punishment.
It's kinda life life. I know robbing people is against the rules. Even though I can do it, I don't want to risk the penalties.
Saying it's OK to break a rule simply because it's possible to break it is, morally speaking, pretty fucking dubious.
