2K Marin: The console wars are 'a bit silly' photo

During our interview with 2K Marin concerning BioShock 2, we couldn't resist asking about fanboyism and the console wars. BioShock was, itself, at the center of a battle between Xbox 360 loyalists and Sony insurgents, as its prior 360 exclusivity made it a prime target for the latter. Until, of course, it was released on the PS3. Then the PS3 fanboys claimed it was brilliant, and not rubbish like they had done before.

Since BioShock and fanboys are no strangers, we asked BioShock 2's creative director what he thought about the long-running online battle for console supremacy.

"There’s a cognitive effect known as 'confirmation bias' which leads people to latch onto conclusions that support their preferences and ignore data which doesn’t," explains Jordan Thomas. "This leads to wild, unreasoning loyalty to a chosen platform, sports team, or brand of soda.

"From a development perspective, the console wars are a bit silly; our target is consistency, and it’s always kind of sad to see people throwing their energy into “platform partisanship”, because it seems to flood the critical channels and drown out other creative discourse."

This is the sad truth about these system wars. If fanboys think that developers appreciate their flame wars, they're wrong. Arguing about review scores because publication X didn't give game Y a 9.5 does little to promote the merits of the game. It obscures that game's merits and overshadows them with silly controversies and mud-slinging. Fanboys aren't helping the developers and publishers that they so diligently defend.

Fortunately, Thomas is sensible about it: "I, of course, am immune to such bias – best platform? Coleco Adam. Everyone else is really, really dumb."

Any fanboy who would like to see what a moron they are should look at any of their own rants and substitute the words Sony and Microsoft with Bubblicious and Bubble Yum.

True true.

I have allways wondered why the PS3 has produced such toxic partisanship. I don't mind that the PS3 has ravid fans, but why all the negitivity if a PS3 game gets reviewed negitively (or even postively, bt not as well as the fanboy wants).

@ NateT- I think it's because the PS3 had such a rough start, which made fnas of the console angry and defensive. Maybe now that the consoles doing much better, the more aggressive PS3 fans will loosen up?

there is fanboyism in every single part of life that has options. I mean look at politics, or religion, or cars, or soda, or sports teams. Every single one of these has fanboys. It's humor nature, it has nothing to do with Sony or Microsoft and has everything to do with being human. people get afraid when their ideas are challenged, and in todays world of the interwebs, where ideas are constantly being challenged people are always looking for the next thing they can latch onto. It will never end.

@ Lines, I loved PC gaming until it busted my budget. Keeping a system up to date is too expensive for me. A console makes better economic sense.

Console gaming thrives because people do not want to drop $150-$200 on a new video card every two years.

That being said, I do not have anything aganst PC gaming, only that it is not right for me.

I'll admit I was a long time Playstation Only fan but I'm starting to just branch out and buy other consoles and software.
This year I'm making it my goal to buy a Xbox 360 and a Wii for the exclusive games.
I'm also gonna buy my friend's DS from him and get myself a PSP as well.

Yeah I realized for a long time the console war was stupid but I participated anyways.

In my eyes I feel Xbox 360 fans started this console war to begin with.
Think about it.
When the PS3 first came out it was slammed by the media and people over youtube.
I'm just defending my PS3 system by saying that it's a great system w/ plenty of games, features, and content to explore.

Nintendo fans also had it rough right after Sony released their console.
I'll say the same thing about the Wii that it has great games that people need to play.

Every console has their pros and cons.
Every console has great games that people need to play.

It doesn't matter what multiplatform games you buy on either console just as long as you support the exclusives that those systems offer.
ex.)
I buy most of my games on PS3 and then just buy exclusives on the 360/Wii.

You can have a preference but still be open to try other games and experiences on different consoles.

My days in the console wars are long over and I don't think I'll ever participate in those types of debates again.
(If the next console war comes out between PS4, Xbox 720, and Wii 2. I'm just gonna turn my head away from that and just play the games.)

I suggest everybody do the same.

I don't know that Y deserved a 9.5, but it should have gotten at least a 9. Publication X is just biased because game Y is named after a different letter of the alphabet than they are.

Neither console offers a real technical advantage over the other, which makes a war between the two silly if you ask me. Only when platforms are very different can you have a real conflict.

The Wii is very different, a different focus, target market and control method. I can see heated debates of Wii versus 360/PS3.

The PC is very different, strong advantages and strong disadvantages. I understand the debate between it and the 360/PS3.

Debate between the 360 and PS3 though? Over what? Silly.

I'm not sure about this whole EXCLUSIVITY, bs. From what I remember it was on PC too. When it's not on PS3 I get the PC version. Yes why get it for PS3 when my comp pumps out graphics far far better? I don't know, I really don't. Maybe because my girlfriend is on it constantly chatting like a monkey?

Also Bioshock was still not that great, good game but not great. Honestly it's just barely on the border of good too. I definitely won't be getting Bioshock 2. I preferred the more futuristic nature of SystemShock myself. Even better I would prefer them to make Freedom Force again. This time with FREAKING team AI.

Console wars are silly indeed. PC is where it's at. :P

You know, PC gaming is more complicated than console gaming, but I think it's just a misconception that it is more expensive. It's very easy to save an average of (an estimate obviously) $20-$30 than if one bought it for console. Gotta love those Steam sales and gotta hate those rarely dropping console game prices. I'd say the savings more than counteract the hardware costs.

I am always on the fence that says PC can't be compared with consoles. PC has a hardware and OSes superior to any console. Period. Done.

That said, I converted into a console gamer about 4 years ago with the emergence of xbox. The experience you get on console is quite different. And the console gaming perspective, my subjective observation is that console does provide more focused gaming experience than any PC can ever be able to. Since then I moved on with 360 and PS3 and I have not been all that happy with PS3, but 80% of gaming is done on both 360 and PS3 for me (360 about 90% and PS3 10%).

So if I may break this donw:

PC != consoles. Consoles != PC.

Wii == in the toy category or in Nintendo category.

360/PS3 == consoles category and the only thing suck about both of them are the fanboys and girls.

It affects everyone, not just PS3 users.

Remember when Twilight Princess got an 8.8? Holy crap, it seemed every Wii owner and prospective Wii owner started freaking out, just because it was .2 short of a 9. (And honestly, I don't feel it even deserved an 8.8 - the game bored me unlike any other Zelda has. Not even Midna or Link turning into a wolf could save it.)

People will always feel a stupid amount of loyalty to brands. I think it's just a way for them to justify their personal preferences and financial decisions.

Once you get to a point when you get "Rival System A" for free, and the only thing you can think is "Oh boy! I can't wait to take a sledgehammer to this and post the video online!", you've seriously gotta evaluate your life. I can easily say that the only reason I don't have every system under the sun is because I don't have the money.

Costs aren't the end all, be all, determining factor of gaming anyway.

Some people, like myself, like variety. PC Gaming has no variety. It's FPSs, RTSs and MMOs. That's about it.

And, honestly, I used to love RTSs. I played Warcraft, Starcraft, Age of Empires and - as is the origin of my name - Seven Kingdoms VERY often. But too much of a good thing is never a good thing.

Sounds like someone wasn't around for Super Nintendo vs Sega Genesis.

The PS3 vs X360 is nothing more than a re-enactment of the good ol' "Super Console Wars". And a bad re-enactment at that.
