2K: Borderlands can rival the biggest games this Christmas photo

Triple A titles like Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 have intimidated a lot of publishers whether they want to admit it or not, and have undoubtedly forced a number of the 2010 delays we've seen lately. Gearbox's Borderlands, however, has remained resolute, with publisher 2K Games believing the RPG shooter will be able to rival the hottest games of the year.

"Borderlands is an incredibly strong offering for this Christmas," says UK marketing manager Simon Turner. "Created by veteran developer Gearbox, we think that Borderlands can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with any game -- it’s slick, fast-paced, tremendously polished, and incredibly stylish."

Turner also believes that Borderlands will be genre-defining: "We think that Borderlands could create an entirely new genre -- Role-Playing Shooter. Think of Diablo in a Mad Max world and you’re close."

I'm glad to see 2K Games is putting so much faith in Borderlands. Games often live or die by how much support a publisher gives them, and considering how few people knew about this game a year ago, it's terrific that 2K has put it in the spotlight and given it the attention it deserves. I hope Borderlands turns out great, and rakes in the money it deserves.

This game looks absolutely fantastic. It's awesome when games like these get the attention and marketing that they deserve. It's going to be tricky, which is this year's BioShock:

Batman: Arkham Asylum, or Borderlands?

i don't think either of those are really comparable to bioshock.

Yeah, an entirely new genre, the Role Playing Shooter, like if you crossed Fallout 3 with... Fallout 3.

But yeah, I am really excited about seeing this one, I really hope it lives up to the amazing glimpses we've seen of it so far. Defo looking forward to the random guns element, here's hoping I get one shaped a bit like a willy.

I've been doing my duty, showing this game to anyone who will look at it. I am so incredibly psyched for it.

It's good to see a publisher stand behind it's game rather than push it to 2010 to avoid competition with Halo and Call of Duty. After all, if the publisher doesn't think the game is as good as the competition why should we?

It seems like 2K has been showing this off to games writers a lot in the last month but not letting anyone talk about it. The concept is great, the visuals are stunning, and Gearbox has the track record to assume that it'll play great (which seems to be most initial impressions), so why aren't they pushing it harder? If there were any other game with this much Internet buzz two months from release we'd already have seen an announcement of an $80 collector's edition and five different pre-order bonuses from five different retailers.

What's the hold up? They need to announce this stuff or announce that it's not coming because I want to pre-order this shit already!

I respect the display of balls, it raises the game in my esteem. If they spit out a demo that delivers, I'll be their.

I would say that Borderlands is FPS then RPG whereas F3 was the reverse. Call me nitpicky, but that makes a huge difference.

Really looking forward to this game. I just need to hear some more concrete gamepaly stuff to make sure it's a day-one purchase.

MW2 it's the most overrated game of all time.

I'm taking two days off from work for this one. The last game I did that for was Fallout 3.

I hope by "Role Play Shooter" they mean "sort of like Deus Ex".

Why not get both? RAGE isn't coming out this year is it?

Oh yeah completely, Borderlands does look a lot more 'actioney' but I don't think the differences are 'huge' The term Role Playing Shooter could very easily be attached to Fallout3 so it seems a little imperious for them to claim they have created it.

I think we can both agree though that if Borderlands is half as good as Fallout3, it'll be like a glorious golden rain from a smiling benevolent god. But with guns and levelling up and that.

I think by "Role Play Shooter", they mean more along the lines of Diablo than Deus Ex. It's going to be primarily a gear-collecting game... which is totally alright with me. I love nothing more than replacing little pieces of gear until my guy is a super badass.

Borderlands, Uncharted and The Saboteur are the only ones I'm interested in, off the top of my head at least. Hmm, all shooters :S

The next Xbox 360 buy one get one half off deal at Best Buy after Borderlands comes out, I'm getting Borderlands and Halo 3: ODST. Though I probably won't play ODST that much. Because I'll have Borderlands.
