250 GB PS3 slim coming to North America on November 3 photo

To the surprise of no one, Sony has announced that on November 3, a slim PlayStation 3 with a 250 GB HDD will be available at retailers in North America. The cost? $349.99.

According to Sony, there will be absolutely no difference in functionality between it and the current 120 GB slim model, save for more hard drive space. So with that in mind, please direct yourself to our hands-on/unboxing, as well as our other coverage. That should answer your questions, in case you have any.

If the 120 GB slim PlayStation 3 didn't push you to purchase one, will the addition of those extra gigs finally do it for you?

Honestly not a bad markup for the extra gigs, installing your own is still a better deal since you could probably go even larger for your money, but honestly this is the way to go.

Man, that's a really sexy console... The only thing stopping me from upgrading is losing my backwards compatibility. If that was in there, they'd instandly have a sale.

Wow it's not very often that Europe gets a head start on the US when it comes to hardware. I think the 250b model came out maybe 2 weeks after the 120gb slim came out. It was a really quiet launch as well like they just appeared.

In the UK the 250GB PS3 slim is being bundled with Uncharted 2 for free which is a bloody good deal at £284.99 since most retailers will give you another game as well and there's a bundle with X-men Origins: Wolverine and The Dark Knight on blu-ray for free starting on Monday.

@crazyape yeah that's cos it came out in europe first for no apparent reason. But considering you pay a hell of a lot more for it than we do I think I'd prefer the wait.

I'm trying to push my buddy to get one of these so I can buy his old school PS3, but he doesn't wanna lose the backwards comparability.

I'm having a serious case of "harddrive envy" right now. I mean I've had to delete content from my PS3 to fit new things on it. So ashamed T_T

But I'm sure that women around the world would be impressed with that 2TB harddrive I saw...

Well... My current one is abit dusty hmm.

I really want to make an excuse to get a slim, it's so pretty and conveniently smaller, considering I can barely afford Uncharted 2, I think I'll pass.

Very nice. I replaced my own hard drive already, but for those who don't want to go through the hassle and have been on the fence about buying one, this seems like a solid deal.

Those stupid little screws that hold in the hard drive thread SO easily, they're an incredible pain in the ass.

I really wish they had kept in the extra USB slots. I will not ruin the Feng Shui of my entertainment center with god damn dongles.

Now I'm going to wait and see if those PS2 games on PSN come true. Not that I'm enthusiastic about supporting downloads for games that aren't hard to find at all, but since Sony wants to be such a hardass about BC, at least the extra space should be nice for downloads.

Now if only they'll just upgrade to a Netflix price model for PSN movies, but I realize this is Sony we're talking about.

Man, I still haven't picked up a PS3 yet (mostly because the consoles I do have are taking up more time than I can afford), but this really makes me want to get one. $350 for everything that system does is incredibly reasonable.

It seems like a good deal compared to the other slim. If there saving is there, this would be worth the price only to save the humility on those pesky HD screws that are made of butter.

still running happy with my Fatty BC 500gb model. But not a bad bargain. If I were to get one I'd prefer getting the $299 PS3 and dropping a 80$ 1T HDD, for $30 more you get x4 the space on this one.

@ Crunshii,

Why would you need a 1 TB drive in a playstation?

Sometimes I don't feel like I'm actually a gamer because I'm not incredibly gluttonous and materialistic. But then I just forget about it and go play some games or something.

You'd be surprised how much you will put on a harddrive once you don't have to worry too much about filling it. The great thing is that the majority won't be used for gaming at all. After your downloaded games, installs and saves, the rest is just for pure entertainment. You can put all of your music on it, rip your CDs, load up all your movies/tv shows and backups, dump all your digital photos into it, download game trailers to watch, download every demo off of PSN, reinstall Home.

Yes the PS3 is a gaming system but it makes a damn good media centre too!!

Everyone realizes how easy it is to replace the hard drive on the PS3, right? Anyone thinking of purchasing one of these should look at buying the regular model and replacing the HD with a $50 320 gigabyte HD. Same price, more space and two HDs instead of one.

I'd get the cheapest model and buy my own hard drive. But yeah, I bought mine for 600 Euro waaaay back when. I see the potential of bigger HD's for people who don't know what's going on but if you look into it a little bit you can upgrade whenever you like.

Have you seen what they've done in the past? There's no way one SKU would have sufficed for them.

it came out in EB games in aus on the 15th same day as uncharted, we're doing a bundle for $599AUS with uncharted 2 and COD 4, which i think is a great deal! only $100 more than the 120gb ps3 and it comes with 2 $100 great games not to mention the extra 130gb hard drive space!

I love how with Sony, $50 more means 130gb more, and with MS, a 120gb HD costs $160 retail.

I'm not even a 360 hater but this just seems like Sony rubbing the REAL cost of that much storage it in their faces.

@DinnertimeNinja

i kinda agree with you, but at my work we're selling the 120GB elite for $447 and the MW2 console for $599, so for an extra $150ish you're getting the extra 130GB, extra controller and a copy of the game so when bundled with a console the extra hard drive space doesn't cost that much extra

the real comparison would be if sony sold a HDD for the ps3 and to see how much they charge for it.My guess that it would be more expensive than the 360 one, just for the fact that ps3 controllers and ps3 headsets are more expensive than the 360 ones

However, we shall never know because of the way that the ps3 HDD has been set up to be user upgradable :)

(all doller values in $AUS)

@stokesy7 Errrmmm... Except Sony selling a hard drive for the PS3 would be ridiculous, since any SATA laptop hard drive will work in the PS3. If Sony did sell "PS3" branded hard drives there is no way in hell they would be more expensive than Microsoft's offering. It would be like selling a "PS3" branded keyboard, that was just a regular keyboard, for $120. I'm not saying they wouldn't jack the price up a bit for the branding, but there is a limit to such things. Microsoft can only get away with this price-gouging because they made it impossible to use any hard drive other than the one they sell. Complain about Sony all you want, but you can at least let the market decide how much you spend on a hard drive upgrade for the PS3.

They'd be better off in leaving the HD alone and tossing in an extra controller. I didn't mind going out and buying a bigger HD for my PS3 but $50 for a controller is just D:

@xaliqen

firstly, sony did release a keyboard exclusive for the ps3, and it's some ugly bluetooth one that costs $80.

secondly, i did say that the ps3 is user upgradable.

i think you have missed what my point was. All i was saying that if the ps3 wasn't set up the way it was, and you did need to buy a hard drive for it my opinion (and as i said in my previous post "my guess") is that it would be more expensive than the 360 one.

and i know that this is every fan boys favorite comment, but i do own both consoles, and i play both consoles quite regularly. my entire point was that seeing how i manage an EB games store, i know the prices of various accessorys and that all ps3 one's are more expensive than the 360 ones. I wasn't complaining about sony at all, i think that it's one of the best features of the ps3 that you can change the hard drive to what ever you want.

So please don't talk to me like im an idiot fanboy who hates sony, because there was no hate at all in my post and i'm not a fanboy and seeing how you defend sony like that and don't even know that there was a keyboard for the ps3 frankly just makes you look like the idiot wanna be fanboy.

:)
