Here are 24 new screenshots from the upcoming survival horror game, Dead Space. Old Jimmy Bean brought word of the games premise a few months back. The game follows Isaac Clarke, a space engineer who gets stuck fighting off aliens that infect their hosts. So basically, imagine Resident Evil except it's infectious aliens instead of the T-Virus ... and it's in space.

I kid though. Think of what I just said more as a complement for I love the Resident Evil series and have a special place for horror games in my black and cold heart. I am really looking forward to Dead Space. It seems like it will be a very refreshing change of pace for the survival horror genre.

Take a gander at the gallery below to get an idea of the combat system and the various aliens you will encounter. I especially love the above screenshot as it reveals that when you aim at an enemy, a digital ammunition counter is projected out from the gun.

With all of the colors that current gen systems can use at the same time, I wonder why do most game only use brown and blue.

it'll be interesting to see the extent of how they use the "OSD" style indicators like GRAW had in the game. I'm a big fan of having innovative and more intuitive ways to display the data, versus the anti-hud movement seen in movie style games like Kong and the Getaway

Looks promising, I think the biggest obstacle the game's going to have is to be endlessly compared to that other sci-fi/space based survival horror game System Shock 2.

Looks cool at the moment. It's still too early to really call anything though.

I love this blatant copying of RE4s point of view. And I'm not being sarcastic. It's a great basis for games like this. Looks good.

Looks like lots of fun. Does anyone else think our hero's armor looks slightly reminiscent of a Big Daddy?

Well it's not a plasma rifle, it's a plasma cutter, the guy you play as is an engineer. What interests me at the moment about this game is how they are going to pull off making this guy move and act like an engineer, NOT a trained solider, while still keeping the gameplay from being clunky and hard to use. Course, they could just as easily cop out and include a back story of him being a former solider and throw the whole idea out.

Just from looking at all the thumbnails it looks exactly like killzone but with slightly more blue. Is the rest of the rainbow not next-gen?

The enemies look incredibly generic. I'm sure the game could be alright, but I don't expect much from this title.

I think this game is a good indicator of EA's apparently renewed interest in licensing original IPs for games. While it may be slightly (read: extremely) monochromatic and derivative of other titles such as RE4 and System Shock(s), at least it's new ground for EA. I give them props for trying something new.

Madden in space this is not and we are all better off because of it.

horror is a fragile thing to leave your game relying on for success. because when it fails, it fails so bad. but i'm praying to the gos this games turns out good, because i fucking love the concept of it. but it looks generic so far and if the horror thing fails i think the game will fall flat.

also, hope they get the combat right

to contribute to the graphics discussion:

the minimal use of colors and graphical themes, we're seeing a lot of this lately (ac, mgs4, killzone2, halo3 etc), is to take pressure off of the graphical rendering process. basically, it takes juice from both artist, programmers and the engine to make it run smoothly if you have a lot of crazy stuff going on.

or some shit like that. i'm not a tech guy. but i heard hideo kojima say it regarding mgs4 and it makes a whole lot of sense to me.

Dead Space looks good. I'm glad EA are breaking their sequelitis license mold, to create some fresh new games. Just wehn we thought Boogie was all they were gonna try (even though it failed, it was still an interesting, different though ill thought out game).

I do think that EA are watching what's been allowing Capcom and Konami to make so much money. Capcom know how to use their IP to full effect, but the real trick is turning funds into new games. From Konami, EA learned how to use games like Pro Evo (Fifa/Madden etc), make them well and sell them well. The result is what we are now seeing.

EA have also learned from Bioshock and Orange Box, that shooters sell well if some heart and passion are pumped into them. After success there it makes sense to build on that.
