2010 Sucked: Addiction issues

2010 Sucked: Addiction issues photo
Want your blog on our home page? Answer this!

[For her Monthly Musing, Elsa shares that her biggest disappointment of 2010 was being so addicted to a single game, she missed out on all the other great stuff that was available. Want to post your own blog? Check out the Monthly Musing topic and start writing! -- JRo]

I didn't play a lot of bad games in 2010, nor did I play a lot of good games in 2010. Mostly I played one game in 2010 - MAG. I managed to play Heavy Rain, and tried to play White Knight Chronicles, Bad Company 2 and a handful of other games ... but I kept putting MAG back in the PS3. I'm not sure why, because it certainly isn't a perfect game ... but I suspect it's for the same reason that games like COD sell so well ... addiction.

While people active in gaming communities tend to play a lot of games because they are exposed to information about a lot of games, and simply make it habit to move on, Joe or Jane Public are probably a lot like me. They buy a game like COD and play it. They play it a lot, all the time ... really it's the only game they play, until the next iteration of the game comes out, then they mindlessly buy it ... and play it. There's a certain comfort level in playing the same game all the time. It's familiar territory with just enough "new" to keep people going. It may not be MAG or COD, it could be Final Fantasy, World of Warcraft or Oblivion - it just has to be a game with a couple hundred potential hours in it. Long enough to be like a favorite pair of slippers - well broken in, slightly odorous, fraying a bit at the edges, but comfortable.

Why MAG? Well, for me, it was the teamwork. When you get a squad or platoon that works as a team, the game is pure magic! This usually happens when playing with other Dtoiders, but there is nothing quite like the feeling of having Tsukanda as our "Sexy Platoon Leader" laying out the overall strategy... of having Clockwork taking out the AA so he can use his air strikes and rein terror on the opposing team (or sometimes his own team) ... of having Talia come running in to revive me when I thought there was no hope left ... of having my husband yelling at me to just "shut the fuck up!", or even having Dan shoot me in the back and teamkill me for giggles. I also have to admit that I'm possibly just a teeny bit bossy ... so the ability to gently make suggestions such as "any maggot caught at the burnoff towers will be teamkilled and teabagged" kinda makes my day. Unfortunately, there isn't always teamwork, and people won't always play nice together to take an objective. Increasingly I can see the appeal of games like Call of Duty. COD is the equivalent of "I'm gonna take my toys and go play by myself". In MAG, I generally just go off and snipe, but in COD, the entire game is just "play how you want to play and who gives a shit about your teammates". Winning the match isn't the objective of the game - simply doing what you want, racking up kills ... it's kind of relaxing in a way. I can see the appeal, I can see the addiction and how this might be habit-forming.

I can feel the same addiction forming for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. I find it relaxing to load up a game with longevity, that I can likely play for many hours. In addition to the main story line, there is the online multiplayer, the faction side quests, finding flags or feathers, and just goofing around. There's a reason that games like this sell well. They have the content (either through multiplayer or game length) that is needed for gamers to gain a sense of comfort and familiarity. It's like watching TV. Would you rather watch a show that you know you like, that you are familiar with, or would you rather take a risk and watch something new? Chances are, you automatically tune in to that show that you are comfortable with. It's a rare person that thrives on constant change, most of us like what we know, rather than take risks with something we don't.

I have over 1000 hours in MAG (excluding the 4 months of the beta that I played). That's the equivalent of playing the game for 41.6 days straight - 24/7. If MAG was a 40 hour a week job, I'd have been doing it for 25 weeks... or just over 6 months. Since release that means I've played the game about 3 hours a day... every day. When put like that... that's a lot of MAG! Yes, I did play some other games too... but mostly 2010 was spent playing one game. Granted, MAG has been through so many patches and fixes and versions and iterations that it seems like a very different game from what was released... but still, about 75% of my gaming time for last year was likely spent with this one game. The shocking thing is that I'm not alone in this. Many gamers spend the vast majority of their time in any year with just a very small handful of games - often only one or two.

I bought other retail games last year, a handful of PSN games, another handful of IPad and IPod Touch games. Additionally I played some old favorites like Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Warhawk and UT3... but for 2010 it came down to one game - MAG . It's a game I love to hate, and hate to love, but I think that's how most gamers perceive their specific game addiction.

2010 sucked... I spent most of my time addicted to just one game, but at least I found that one game to satiate my need for comfort and familiarity, that game that I wanted to turn my PS3 on and play, that game that let me spend many a happy evening chatting with newly-made friends. I guess 2010 didn't suck quite so badly after all.

what happened to our left margins?? I can't seem to get white space on the left and had this same issue on my last blog. Anyone know of any fixes or is this a site issue?

Well, acknowledging your problem is the first step, Elsa! 1,000 hours is really quite intimidating. I'm pretty sure that I didn't even come close to that with my total 2010 console playtime!

There was a time in my life where I was addicted to Halo 3. I had good days, where I would be awesome at the game. And, I also had bad days, where I would get my ass handed to me. But, It was always the same game. I never even upgraded to ODST or Reach. 3 was the addiction. It was comforting in its monotony.

I was never one for teamwork though. I would always lonewolf it, and silently be great or awful. Taking out my bad day on people or reveling in my jovial mood.

I probably would of gotten addicted to Bad Company 2 and teamwork, if I wasn't broke at the time. Dodged a bullet, I guess.

I didn't even notice the left margin was gone. And, now that I notice it, it bothers me. Not alot, but some.

LOL! Maybe addiction wasn't the right term. I'm not overly concerned with the number of hours I spend gaming, I'm a bit more concerned that the hours were mostly spent with only one game!

I'm retired and don't work, and I mostly game instead of watching TV. I probably game a bit too much (as noted, I did play other games aside from MAG) but overall, the gaming doesn't as yet interfere with any aspects of my real life. I just find it odd that the vast majority of my time is spent with just one game... but on thinking it over it's probably not all that unusual. It's that stuff about familiar and comfortable, I guess. Being on a gaming site like Dtoid, I'm actually exposed to "unusual" - people that play many different games over the course of a year.

Basically I'm saying that I guess I'm normal.. it's everyone else that abnormal! :)

I haven't been addicted to a game like this since my computer died (like Ali D, mine was TF2), but I totally get it. In one regard, it's a bit of a godsend -- after all, it's not like my wallet can really keep up with my purchases these days -- but on the other hand, I'd feel terrible missing out on all the OTHER great games that came out!

And yeah, the margins lick ass right now :)

PS - You need to pick someone on your PSN friends list that you absolutely hate and nuke them so I can send you a fucking invite! I tried a couple weeks ago (wanted to play UT3) but it said your list was full... unacceptable!

Cool! I try not to get to involved with fps´s and mmo´s these day´s. Mainly because I´ve played wow for what some would consider too long and fps´es usually are super addicting, but I still love to play them at lan parties! I´m currently hooked on Chime and supermeatboy, but chime only has 5 songs and you need to take regular brakes when playing super meatboy so there always reality around the corner reminding you that there´s so much more out there! ;D There so much good out there and so little lime !

Well you now have an excellent foundation in which to talk about things like FPS, addiction, online gaming, and the benefits/downside of all of it. You have earned the experience (literally and metaphorically) and have the friends and stories to prove it.

I love the blogs when you bring up MAG - it always tugs right at my heartstrings.

Although I only have a fraction of your allotted hours the same story of a single game could be said of myself. For the best part of last Autumn and Winter I would abstain from playing anything else as I looked forward each night to MAG exclusively. While it's great, I can see myself swiftly growing tired of AC Brotherhood's multiplayer component unless we replace the squawking of strangers with something more DTD.

If any game this year is even nearly as good as MAG last year, I'll be happy.

Mag+Addiction=you're not trying hard enough.

But that's beside the point, if you can really find lasting value in a game that released in 2009 (I belive) then that only means that the devs are doing their job right.

Me being a Mag afficionado, I average at least 2 hours a day on it. So I commend you to your dedication

My mum and dad are always going on about how they think I've got a gaming addiction. But I point out how much time they spend in front of the TV just watching anything that comes on. They do that for most of the day, but that's not addicting seemingly. I play a few hours of a variety of games and do some other things, but I'm the one that's addicted.

@Celica... I came close with Warhawk... over 300 hours of ranked play and likely double that in unranked play (I rarely played ranked games because we usually had a passworded server). I do tend to go from one game to the next and play the hell out of them - again though, I think this is somewhat normal. For MAG I have over 800 hours on my main account, but I also use my alt account and have some Valor and SVER hours on that one... around 200 or so. In the beta I know I also racked up several hundred hours. MAG is winning so far I guess.

@Andy... send me a PSN note you antisocial ass! Once I have your PSN note I'll dump someone and add you. :)

@Lenigod... ah, it was just a random sampling... there are so many people I should have included - yourself, ElZilcho... and Red... but everytime I think of Red I remember him mixing himself a fancy drink and Dan asking if he was going to drink it through his vagina! That line still makes me giggle uncontrollably! Oh yeah.. and that time Clockwork fell asleep playing MAG and everyone on our squad could hear him softly snoring... that was hilarious! So many stories...

@Kaggen... that's one of the reasons I avoid MMO's like WoW... I know the addiction to one game could so easily get out of hand.

@Occams... yeah, I never thought of it that way. So many people blog about all the different games they played, but I guess I do have something to blog about! You've given me inspiration!!!

@Byronic (though you'll always be Tsukanda to me!), yeah, the very best part was the friendships! I still haven't tried AC:B online yet, saving that for Wednesday - but I could sense it won't have the same pull as MAG for teamwork and DTD fun. I'm rather hoping that Homefront might provide for a solid 2011!

Brotherhood eh? Were this a different universe and I had bought a PS3, we could be playing together. The multiplayer is really special and there's something comforting in pulling off a hit...and disheartening when you get the knife in your own face.

Remember, if you ever need help I'll be there for you. (Also, if you need to fuel your addiction you can come to me with no judgment on my part.)

What an awesome blog! I love being the unofficial medic of the team, plus it gives lots of easy points!

I don't think you have an addiction, considering that you spent that many hours in six months. The teamwork in MAG is awesome when it works, and when it doesn't Monngoose raging about it is awesome too!

Super fapped.

I've spent way too much time on Minecraft in the past couple of months. I know exactly how you feel. And even if I kept purchasing games in between, I still do not have the motivation to finish most of them. Minecraft keeps on sucking me back.

Goddamn, it's like I'm playing World of Warcraft all over again. >_>

See There are few games that constantly hold my attention, which I guess is sad but it's the ADD in me. However, the one game series that brings me back is Left 4 Dead. It's the greatest co-operative multiplayer experience EVER.....this generation. But even then I like variance. A good multiplayer shooter or a straight up co-op game of something. So few games are to me all encompassing.

That's intense. I know I've struggled with gaming addictions over the years. With a MUD, Team Fortress 2, Modern Warfare 2, and for the last few years an internet addiction in general. 1000 hours is definitely a lot, but I mean... if you enjoy the time, it isn't negatively affecting your life, and you aren't regretting not doing something else with your time then I don't see a problem.

And a sidenote, I used to know the woman that is in the toilet/laptop picture. She's actually playing the MUD I was addicted to in that while waiting for a plane. XD

@Epic... MAG was only released in late January of 2010... though the beta did run for about 4 months in 2009! I don't know the devs did their jobs right... I guess to some degree I've kept playing in the hopes that they would balance the maps.

@Ali D... I used to watch a LOT of TV, now I rarely watch any TV. Gaming has basically replaced my TV time - I'm not sure if I'm just very boring, or if one addiction replaced another! You're right to make the comparison to your parents! :)

@Law.. yeah, I totally suck at Brotherhood (I'm on Sequence 5 and just figured out the whole "chaining assassinations" thing! LOL!), but it's fun!

@Andy... well... first you buy a PS3... then you choose the option to send a note... to Elsa... one that says "hi, it's Mr. Andy Fucking Dixon... send me a buddy invite"! Then I send you a buddy invite... then we become PS3 friends! :)

@Bey... yeah, a few games (I loved the two Deathspank games!) but not a lot of them in retrospect!

@Talia... you are an AWESOME medic!! I can't believe the number of kills you get, especially with the risks you're willing to take to revive a fellow squad mate!

@Kraid... I almost mentioned Minecraft in my blog - this does seem to be one of "those" games that people seem drawn to!

@Gareth... I do wish that we had L4D on the PS3... though now that Gabe likes us... maybe one of the next games in the series!

@Wrenchfarm... speaking of Gabe... yeah, TF2 was a tragedy on the PS3. :(

Qraze... yeah, I noticed! I tried... but MAG just kept calling me back. I still haven't finished the game, nevermind the multiplayer. I'm not sure that I'll ever get through it, especially with Two Worlds 2 and then the next Elder Scrolls coming up this year!
They have a couple of fart games on the app store... but snot rockets - yeah, that's got possibilities!! :)

@Scotty... I think my internet addiction issues are likely of more concern than my gaming. I can go a day without gaming... but no internet... I don't know that I could do it! (and you know that woman?? Too cool! )

@Randombullseye... you're a masochist!

@Cormac.. yeah, if I had a 360, I suspect it would be Halo too!!

@Jaws... see response to Andy... just send a note saying who you are on Dtoid... I get so many buddy requests from teh 12 year old boys whenever I play!

Oh... and if anyone is getting Two World 2 and wants to play the online co-op (pacific time zone) send me a PSN note with your Dtoid name!

I don't think that's a lot of time at all.

I spend a lot of time on Super Street Fighter IV. Not just playing, but reading about it, practicing theories and strategies in my head, constantly visiting Shoryuken/iPlaywinner/Eventhubs, and traveling to tournaments and meetups.

So while I may average only 10 or so hours of playtime a week, I spend a lot more time in its sphere of influence. Not a bad way to spend one's time, as long as it's fun.

I know the feeling. I spent 800 hours on TF2 for PS3, and an extra 1600 for the PC version.

Someone help me oh god why

Also, it's not really addiction, as defined medically. It's dependency i.e. you depend on the game for your entertainment, but it doesn't adversely affect your life.

Your description of one or two 'comfort' games a year is perfect. In 2010, Resonance of Fate and I guess... Splinter Cell: Conviction were mine. Besides those two, I did play a bunch of other games, but I kept coming back to those two. I think finding a 'comfort' game that you know you will keep playing in the future makes any year not a failure.

Personally, I'll get addicted to something for about 3 months and then I'll completely drop it without warning.

I remember going completely nuts for TF2 on release, worked hard at getting all the Steam achievements too. Then one day, I just completely stopped, like somebody clicked their fingers. I think I played the Left 4 Dead for nearly 18 hours on the same day I bought it. Crazy shit. Nowadays, I really need some serious motivation to play that series.

So I'm glad I only get addicted in a binge sort of way. I think heroin addicts call it "chipping", where they have a binge and check into rehab after a set deadline. Yeah, I have videogame chipping.

@Casual... yeah, if I include the time reading gaming stuff on the MAG forums, other game forums and Dtoid... then maybe I do have a bit of an actual addiction issue - still, I luckily don't have much of a "real life" for it to interfere with!

@jaws... send me a PSN note... it's definitely going to be my next game and I'd love to have someone to try the online with!! (my PSN is "Elsa")

@Andy... well... you don't have to have a PS3... you could always buy me an Xbox! :)

@Hangman... wow... that's a lot of time on the PS3 version considering it was never well supported. I bought the game late and there was almost nobody playing online. :(
... and in regards to the word "addiction"... I was mostly referring to one game as opposed to playing a variety of games, but there is also an actual addiction factor in that some days I feel the "need" to play the game.

@grafkhun.... "comfort" game... nice terminology!

@Stevil... I kind of wish I was more like that, at least then I'd be exposed to different games instead of just mostly sticking with one.... until that next game comes along.

@Red... dump the new girlfriend and come back to us... we miss you! (bicycle helmet and all!) :)

@King... It's not often I don't have a "go to" game, though there have been brief periods without one.

@Blitzard... yeah, in some ways it does feel like "wasted time" until I start remembering all the fantastic people I regularly game with.

Dan!!! So MS is killing you with the hours are they? I thought you might have wandered back into WoW and gotten stuck! Hope to see you soon!

Yes Elsa they are; it's rough but I enjoy it. I wish I had just gotten stuck in the new expansion of WoW, I've had time to hit 85, but aside from that; not much time to do anything else the little bit of time I have to play before I go to work, nobody is on; and the little time I have after work everyone has done gone to bed. I haven't even started raiding ihe new content yet, and I generally always hop in on the new end game content within the first 2-3 wks of an expansion and have it down. X_X

I am also addicted but the other way around, I play lots of games but rarely concentrate on 1 alone (except for monster hunter tri and goldeneye). This year I finished at least 50 games which is the reason I cant take the luxury of staying too much with only one game because there are much more coming.

How easily I can relate to this. So many hours put into Modern Warfare when I got it. Of course I'd break away now and again to play some Mass Effect or Bioshock, but it was always Modern Warfare that drug me back and ate up so many hours of my life. I can't complain though. It happened to be a rough time in my life, on the verge of changing everything that I knew for 20 years. I met a group of really nice people and we got together every night just having fun. They probably still don't know how much they helped out during that time period, and since then everyone's kinda went their separate way, but I wouldn't change it for anything.

Fortunately or not, my ADHD and need to buy new shiny things keeps me from being so afflicted by a single game. However, I do recognize the mindset of a game addiction. My own personal poison was Lufia 2, back when I was... God, I don't even know.

It was sixth, seventh, or eighth grade. I had a bit of a passing familiarity with the first game, so I rented the second. Now, a previous renter of the game had cleared it once, so I was able to start a new game with the 4x EXP and Gold, which made the game pretty easy. However, once I finished, I noticed the Gift mode.

To clarify, during the first full week rental, I'd killed three full days exploring the Ancient Cave. Gift Mode let me choose the party I wanted (Dekar/Guy/Maxim/Artea FTW), let me collect the Iris Treasures, and let me do so in a mode designed entirely to consume one's soul in a method more beguiling than Heroin.

I rented the game for fourteen weeks in a row. I'd beaten the game in the first week, and I did not leave Gift Mode until I'd gotten every Iris Treasure. I didn't give a damn about Maxim's quest, or how being able to mix and match party members couldn't possibly make sense. What mattered was getting every treasure.

I still own a copy of Lufia 2, and I don't dare download the ROM. Because I know if I do, I'm going to lose myself in an attempt to get every Iris Treasure and defeat the slime at the bottom of the dungeon in one playthrough, and there aren't enough save states in the world to support that.

Once again another great post. I rented MAG but I couldn't get into it. I was playing with randoms though and I really should of been playing with Dtoid members who can coach me through somethings. I wasn't really addicted to any games this year other than MW2. But I haven't played any COD games in weeks. Mostly beacuse Black Ops is so laggy and Im sick of MW2. But this year Im really looking forward to playing Killzone 3, twisted metal, Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3. I hope I see you online sometime elsa (and others), even thought I haven't been on a Dtoid Friday Night Fights in forever! :S
