If I had to guess what the highest grossing new IP of 2009 was, I probably would not have picked DJ Hero. Nothing against Activision's game or anything, but I didn't think it made that big of a dent last year.
It did, though. It pulled in more than a dozen best music game awards in the US and made plenty of "best of" lists for '09. Even more than that is the NPD Group's ranking of the game as the number one new IP for 2009 for both North America and Europe, according to this press release we just read.
Congrats, Activision.
What would you have picked for a top IP for 2009. My mind jumped to Borderlands. What else am I forgetting?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I think the header is from that other DJ game and not DJ Hero.
why didnt anyone buy that?
borderlands is keeping me busy too though.
fuck. music. games.
There a few good new IPs last year but honestly I think the sequels outshined them all. It was a good year for sequels.
I guess Arkham Asylum counts so I'd say that was probably my favorite even if it borrows from such a familiar license.
....no just me....lol
Maybe they meant highest grossing per unit.
For anyone passing on it cause they think its a rip off, give it a try, you will probably enjoy it.
But did they cost $150-$200?
Interestingly the price dropped to $90 on Amazon. When did that happen?
Sorry, but I am not buying that PR message. I have nothing against DJ Hero, but I think any of the games menctioned above did better than it.
The fastest selling IP was Borderlands.
The most proftiable was DJ Hero.
DJ Hero cost $120 last year at minimum. So essentially one copy of DJ Hero is two Borderlands (assuming you payed full price what with all the sales).
These numbers are coming from the NPD not Activision. I don't see why people think this is a PR stunt.
Very interesting math thingy.
I'd love to get more detail like Arch649 and Xzy are hinting at.
At $120/200 per unit, DJ Hero would've needed to sell significantly less copies to make the same amount of money as Borderlands (probably the highest selling new IP of 2009).
IF, big "if", DJ Hero sold 1.5 million copies at $120 each, that would've equaled $180,000,000 - I'm sure the $200 price for the Renegade Edition would also boost the money factor. This $180 million would've been the exact same amount if Borderlands (or any other new IP) sold 3 million copies. Obviously these are straight numbers, not accounting for where the actual money goes.
Since I highly doubt DJ Hero sold 1 million + copies (after barely hitting 350,000 copies in its first 2 months), I think it was the most profitable new IP...of the rhythm game genre.
The press release doesn't specify but it does make it sound like it's the highest grossing new IP out of every category.
DJ Hero seems like the kind of thing kids would ask for for Christmas, because the price is kind ridiculous. Hell, that's what I did.:)
December numbers must be bananas...
B-A-N-A-N-A-S.
Yeah,DJ Hero is a really fun.... heeeeey...
Dragon Age
Borderlands
inFamous
Shadow Complex
Torchlight
DJ Hero - $119.99 now $89.99 (October 27, 2009 - 3 months)
InFamous - $59.99 now $36.99 (May 26, 2009 - 8 months)
Prototype - $59.99 now $32.99 (June 9, 2009 - 7.5 months)
Borderlands - $59.99 now $54.99 (October 20, 2009) - 3 months)
Dragon Age - $59.99 now $56.99 (November 20, 2009 - 2 months)
Demon Souls - $59.99 now $56.99 (October 7, 2009) - 3.5 months)
Brutal Legend - $59.99 now $39.99 (October 7, 2009) - 3.5 months)
(NA releases and console prices) The only ones that appear to be prematurely discounted are DJ Hero and Brutal Legend....just saying.
"I guess Arkham Asylum counts so I'd say that was probably my favorite even if it borrows from such a familiar license."
"Borrows"... ? It BELONGS to a familiar license, ergo, it is not a new IP. So no, it does NOT count.
Phew. I thought I was an angry fella. I guess I assumed by "borrows" people knew what I was talking about and I guess by "new IP" I meant reboot which you're right it doesn't count.
Now I've got these Valiums. I mean they help me out. Just sayin'.
Borderlands was my fav IP for 2009
And that's what I and some others are saying. It's not a conspiracy or PR. It's blatant and right there in text. All this NPD report says is it's the highest grossing which is a big "Duhr," because it's expensive as hell. Or rather was expensive as hell. Had it released at $90-$100 like it is now I doubt it would've done as well.
I'm guessing you haven't actually played DJ Hero? Have you? The game was great and played nothing like any previous music game I've ever experienced.
are those the valiums I gave you?:)
