2008: retail videogames outsold DVD and Blu-ray photo

More Halo 3, less Telladega Nights -- at least that's what consumer's wallets are saying. According to Media Control GfK International's 2008 wrap-up, packaged retail videogames outsold DVD and Blu-ray discs worldwide last year.

Game sales hit $32 billion, beating out the $29 million for DVD and Blu-ray movies. Rentals are not included in the report, though.

Hollywood, eat this: Games now take up 53 percent of the market, and this boring named company predicts that this number will move up to 59 percent in 2009. Do you think this has something to do with increased rentals and streaming? Or are movies just getting to be that bad now?

I wonder how long it will be before videogames overtakes music and movies.

I think its more that rental services like Netflix and Blockbuster online are starting to chew at the sales. Most people I know only buy boxsets of tv shows they enjoy and otherwise use netflix.

Is this putting into account the average cost of $~60 per game to the $~25 per DVD?

Wasn't there an article like this before that claimed video games beat movies but included the sale of systems and accessories and neglected the fact that you can buy as much as 10 movies for the price of one game?

Yeah, games tend to cost a hell of a lot more than DVDs, so this really ain't a shocker to me...

This is based on dollars spent, not unit volume, but want difference does it make? People spent more money on games than filmed entertainment this year. That's great news for the gaming industry.
