2008 is still the year of the PlayStation 3, promise! photo

Jack Tretton claimed that 2008 was the "year of the PS3," but it seems that, just like 2007, it was little more than another year of promises. Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida, however, is adamant that with only a few months of 2008 left, Sony has enough in its bag of tricks to make Tretton's claim a reality.

"All the things are now coming together in terms of the right hardware, cost and pricing, and we are increasing our hard disc space as we are increasing the content we’re offering through the network and the big titles we’re working on, coming out this Christmas," he claimed. "All that is coming together this year."

He also stated that he "definitely hoped" 2009 would be "another" big year for the PlayStation 3 and cited upcoming games such as Heavy Rain and MAG as potential winners.

There is good stuff on the horizon, but 2008 is not the year of the PlayStation 3, no matter what Sony manages to pull out of the bag between now and January. There are four months left, and a last-minute Christmas boom made up of LittleBigPlanet and maybe Home isn't enough to qualify as a "year." While the PS3 is gaining ground, claiming triumphantly that this has been the system's year is simply not true.

I'm pretty happy with the little gems that my PS3 has seen this year, but its no where near to what I'd like to see. Which is an explosion of awesomeness that begins with Team Ico.

I wont go around saying that 2008 is the year of the playstation 3, but I don't think that LBP is the only game that the rest of 2008 has to offer.. Resistance 2, Motorstorm2, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm (have you played the demo, this game is awesome), SOCOM, and along with random PSN titles like Flower, Fat Princess, and Wipeout HD, I think that 2008 has done fine for the ps3.

And as much as Sony is getting an erection for Home, I don't think this appeals to many gamers on sites like Destructoid. I think Home is aimed at the younger, newer gamer, who is much more social online and looking for a casual aspect of gaming to enjoy (for free). I'll play around with Home, but it's nothing to brag about I'm sure.

Besides L4D (which is pretty much a PC title), I am more excied for the PS3 releases vs. 360.

It depends on your definition of year of the PS3. As far as substantial games, I don't think the other 2 can top the PS3's breadth and quality on exclusives this year.

MGS4
MLB 08: The Show
Pixel Junk Monsters
Singstar Vol. 1/2
echochrome
Hot Shotz Golf: Out of Bounds
Pixel Junk Eden
Disgaea 3
Gran Turismo Prologue
SIREN: Blood Curse
R&C F: Quest for Booty
HOME
The Last Guy
Buzz Quiz TV
SOCOM: Confrontation
Resistance 2
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
Wipeout HD
LittleBigPlanet

Not to mention all the 3rd party games that are at a minimum the same if not better quality on the PS3.

If you use this definition...2008 is certainlythe year of the PS3.

Of course if the cynics (*cough* Mr. Sterling), use profits or box volumes, then 2008 is probably not the year for the PS3. But in order to make profits and sell boxes you can't put the cart in front of the horse as they say (unless you sell the public a Gamecube in sheeps clothing). Doesn't bother me if Sony makes profits, they are hooking me up with some sweet @$$ games this year and I'm enjoying every bit of my 2008 gaming experience on the PS3.

Sony had a good year, but so did Microsft, and even Nintendo to some extent. I don't know if anyone is going to come out the clear winner this time around.

There all shit, except MGS4 and maybe LittleBigPlanet.

AND! I cant believe people are counting HOME as a cause of saying its been a big year for PS3.. its a fucking dashboard update and some jazzed up Second Life shit added in. Ahh well done SONY, you released your console with a fucking awful dashboard that makes it easier to communicate by carried pigeon with your online friends.

Im in no way saying that 360 is having a amazing year but seriously.. SONY aint done fuck all.

The Ps3 is getting some nice titles out and (for once) I have a selection of games to play rather than sitting on a single title for a while.

@GeneralWong

How can you list games, call them shit and you have NEVER played them? I smell a fan boy.

@pixel

Besides Resistance 2 (which would probably be a rent) and LBP, nothing peaked my interests in PS3's lineup this year.

Friend of mine purchased one and I was like "what games you gonna get"
His response? "COD4, Rock Band, and Bioshock (when it comes out)." I then asked him couldn't he get a 360 instead and save some money especially since the $200 arcade was coming out?
His reply, "O shit, I'm taking my PS3 back to Best Buy"

I you want a bluray player then sure thing, the exclusives are too thin on the ground (the ones you would actually pay for). To say that 3rd party games are better on the PS3 is a bit of a spoof. Ask any 3rd party developer and they will state that they have to work far harder to do the same thing on the 360 for the most part. I have personally played some of the top 3rd party games on both machines, for the titles I played the negative differences were minimal but when they showed up they were on the PS3.

Out of all the list up there, about 4 of them are considered great for the hardcore gamer, so no not this year. Next year might be some big hitter.

How can you judge all of those games so easily? It only displays your ignorance and bias for one system.

the problem with the ps3 is simple...it takes too much work to get results. So, you see games like LBP and Killzone and MGS4 taking a year or two longer than they should to create. Not only that, but they spend too much time getting things to work and look decent and they should be spending that time on game design, game play, testing...etc. Last year was going to be the year of the ps3 remember? But...ALL of their exclusive games turned out worse than expected. I see this happening again but at a lesser extent...because games like killzone and lbp got years and years to make their games. The issue here is well, THEN WHAT? You're gonna need to wait years again until games of that caliber are going to be released. In other words, Sony's got 3 or 5 years of blank-check production all coming out next year or the end of this year. Good luck sony...another 2007 of exclusives would be nail in the coffin for your system games wise.

@superbeefy2050 - I could just as easily blow off the few exclusives the 360 or Wii have in 2008 as well. My point is that the PS3 has such a DIVERSE MIX of quality exclusives to choose from in 2008. You can poo poo on R2 all you want, but to many it's a HOTLY anticipated title to say the least. I'm not saying all the games listed are AAA games for the HARDCORE Guys....but they show how Sony's aresenal has a broad appeal to EVERYONE. They've got something great for everyone....literally. If you can't find one exclusive from that list you would have a great time playing, then you truely are a fanboy. I can easily pick games from the exclusive Wii and 360 lineup taht are great and that I want to play too, but I guess not everyone can look past their own console prejudice's (aka General Wong, wonky360)

I'm hoping to grab a 80gig PS3 this month. There are a few exclusives like LittleBigPlanet I'm hyped for, as well I want to try out Fable and Rachet & Clank Future Tools. Too I may just decide to go with PS3 versions over Xbox 360 versions of games if the PS3 is quieter. My Xbox 360 is too noisy and it'll cost me $100 for the upgraded drive to fix.

Anywho I hear you'll soon be able to use a PS3 as a PVR (DVR?) which makes it even more of a value.

@BattyAdriot

Thanks for the english lesson, I will remember that the next time I am writing on a game website where PROPER use of the ENGLISH language is not permitted. How about you check through the 1000's of spelling mistakes that probably litter this topic, or you could just blow your fucking skull apart and get a relative to send me the aftermath so that I can chuckle to myself and eat dairylea.

Well now, someone just had a temper tantrum.

Admittingly, things dragged along for the PS3 this year... but the year as a whole was remarkably better than the previous at least. Personally I think the status of the PS3 as a whole is great as long as the games keep coming out faster, and the system keeps selling better.

As to the person who remarked that development for the PS3 is slow... and it's not on the 360? Too Human? Alan Wake? Face it, development times for this generation suck across the board; you can't narrow the problem down to one console. Rockstar can barely get DLC out the door for the 360's GTA4 less than a year after the game's fucking release. If that's not some epic story arc where you're in the sewers of Liberty City shooting giant rats and alligators, it'll be a huge disappointment.

If it wasn't the Ps3's year who's year was it? The wii only had few good exclusives and the 360 didn't have the year it has had in the past. It had the best year at of all 3, not necessarily in sales but jsut the amount of ground it caught up on. I really wish I had one about now.
