2008 Interactive Fiction Competition games now available for download photo

Interactive Fiction (or "IF" as those hep cats in the know call it) is very near and dear to my heart. Having grown up on Infocom games, I find that there's nothing quite like the imaginative energy that comes from playing a good text adventure. So, when I heard that the annual Interactive Fiction Competition was underway, I had to rush right over and check it out.

Currently in its fourteenth year, the Interactive Fiction Competition attracts text fans from all over the world. Prizes are awarded to games categorized by the programming The only criteria for entry is that it is possible to complete the game in under two hours. Judging is open to anyone and all one has to do to participate is play the games and rate them on a 1-10 scale.

This year, there are 35 entries in the competition. Titles include The Absolute Worst IF Game in History, Piracy 2.0, Everybody Dies and Lair of the CyberCow.

If you have even a passing interest in Interactive Fiction, I'd urge you to go and check out a few of the games in the contest. Every year the games run the gamut from serious to silly and there's usually something for everyone's tastes.  And, at worst, you've only wasted two hours of your life. That's a lot less than it takes to get through a lot of terrible games.

I could never get into these, even when I was bored. Way too much effort trying to find the exact word you need:

Climb ladder.
I only understood "ladder".
Ascend ladder.
I only understood "ladder".
Place hand on rung of ladder.
Just give up.

I'll probably wait until the winners are selected and play the top few. Thirty-five is an overwhelming number.

A post about IFComp on Destructoid? WIN! More people should play those games. In many aspects (NPC interaction etc.) they are way ahead of mainstream games.

I'm still fond of some of the older ones. 9:05 and Pick Up The Phone And Die are both some oldies-but-goodies. :)

You know...as long as I've already posted and have a legitimate excuse to double-post...here's the Interactive Fiction Archive in case anyone doesn't know about it and wants to go back and check out older IFs (including ones from previous contests). I think there's a few gigs of IFs there, in case you want to be overwhelmed by sheer content. And it is all free for downloading and playing. Enjoy.

Has anyone tried Piracy 2.0? I'm stuck.
That being said, I've moved on to Everybody Dies, and while it's not necessarily very challenging, holy shit is it good. Highly recommended.
