1UP bought by Dell?

1UP bought by Dell? photo
     The almighty dollar

No, I'm not kidding. A few days back we reported Ziff Davis was selling 1UP and EGM. Well, it looks like the site's already been bought and is now within the unforgiving claws of Dell. Notice the new logo in the top left corner of the site.

Apparently, going to http://www.1up.com doesn't display the logo. However, going to http://dell.1up.com does. On the right hand side of the page is a "casual gaming" bar with "Dell gaming console 2.0" listed as the first item. The word "Dell" is all over the page.

[Editor's note: A lot of people seem to be skeptical about this, myself included. While everything so far indicates that 1UP has been bought over, it hasn't been confirmed. An e-mail has been sent by Destructoid to the concerned parties. We are currently awaiting a reply.]

There is no dell logo. That is either a fake image, or you have magical witch powers.

This is soooo gay. Check out the "casual gaming" thing in the right-hand sidebar, courtesy of Dell. What's weird is if I switch to IE, the site looks normal, but in Firefox it has the Dell shit.

Try using a different browser and you'll see it.

I have no idea how you guys are seeing a Dell logo, I've got nothing like that in IE or Firefox.

one thing i notices, i go to www.1up.com. I have a noscript pluging installed for firefox so it tells me anysites trying to load javascript. When i look, it shows www.dell.com as one of the site trying to load javascript even though there are no actual dell advertisements on the page.

interesting.

I can't believe that a press release wouldn't be issued of the purchase. Also, I do see that page at http://dell.1up.com, however the copyrights still say it's owned by Ziff Davis.

Also, perhaps it's just some cross advertisement/promotional thing they have going on. I'm not ready to say that this is confirmation of a sale.

There is an XPS prestitial on the 1up load as well. It could just be promotional as Chris says.

dell needs to update
"Dell Start Page
Ziff Davis - 1UP. Create a Section. Search by topic or feed URL: ... Entertainment, Business, and Dell Special Offers. Don't have an account? ...
www.google.com/ig/dell - 81k "

What does clicking on the Home tab take you guys to? For me I end up at a Google home page with CNN, weather, Google maps, google video and my dell support.
DanielO's Avatar
DanielO at 01/08/2007 21:00
And back to the task at hand, clicking on the music tab brings up yahoo music, which Dell does not own, so this seems to be more of a partner type deal, then the buy-out Ziff has been talking about.

I wasn't at first, but I am now getting the Dell logo on regular 1up.com.

On the dell.1up.com, you can notice a few new cosmetic changes.
The downloads sections has replaced the News section.

I don't think it's that big of a deal. 1up is probably one of my favorite "regular" gaming news websites. I like alot of their feature articles, and they aren't scared to give a game a rating lower than 7. I've never viewed Dell as a hostile company. If they don't pull any lame tricks with 1up, I think everything will be well.

This must also mean that since Dell bought 1up, they might own Filefront as well.

Ew, there's even the dell partners tab with links to all kinds of crap. Skanky.

Seriously, though, 1up sucks. They can have it.

Sorry guys, I don't buy it. 1up might be a content provider, but they were not bought out. Using this logic, Dell also bought YahooMusic since they are the Music channel content provider.
mentho's Avatar
mentho at 01/08/2007 21:13
So did Dell buy Yahoo! Music too? http://music.yahoo.com/dell/

Same look.

I think the blogger is being a bit hasty here. Just looks like 1up is doing some branding or something for a Dell portal perhaps. This isn't how companies reveal that they have been bought or sold.

morningblur's Avatar
morningblur at 01/08/2007 21:48
People, please. A subdomain does not mean they have been purchased. This is just a rebranding for the dell portal. If you keep seeing the dell logo on top of 1up, please clear your cookies and visit 1up.com. Notice how there is no dell logo now?

This is as about as valid as saying Nintendo has bought destructiod because of wii.destructoid.com.

Jump to conclusions much? haha

It's probably just a portal for new Dell users or something. Instead of linking to www., a new Dell probably has dell.1up.com in its favorites or something.
