1UP announces Game of the Year nominees, Kane & Lynch makes the cut photo

The 1UP Network has released their list of nominees for game of the year, and voting is now open at the 1UP Web page. We noticed something while scanning through the list of nominees: Kane and Lynch: Dead Men made the cut.

By now you know what we think about the game, and you may have heard a little something about a bit of controversy on another recent review of the same title, but somehow Kane and Lynch: Dead Men has made it into 1UP's Best Action Game nominees list. Granted, 1UP gave the game a relatively good score of 75, proving that they liked it more than we did. But, even their readers have shown some disdain for the game, giving it an average score of 4.9. I think that's "bad" by their own scale. If your readers aren't digging it, then why put it on the list?

I know this isn't Destructoid's nominee list, and I know that 1UP leaves voting to their readers, but we wouldn't have included Kane and Lynch: Dead Men in a Best Action Game lineup. Cashwh0re.com might, but would you?

Hit the jump for the full release and nominee list.

[Thanks, JR]

1UP Network, widely recognized as the
authority in video game industry news and content, today announced the
nominations for the 5th annual 1UP Awards, honoring the year's most popular
games. Voting is open to the gaming public (http://bestof2007.1up.com) now
through Dec. 31, 2007. Award winners will be announced at a special
ceremony on February 20, 2008.

"2007 was an extremely exciting year for video games," states Sam
Kennedy, editor-in-chief of 1UP.com and site director of 1UP Network. "With
the further establishment of new platforms, coupled with the continuous
advancements in video game technology, this year delivered some of the best
titles to date. The 1UP Awards are truly the voice of the gamers and by
handing the judging reigns over the gaming community, the developers get
direct praise from their fans. We greatly look forward to seeing who the
gamers think were the cream of the crop this year."

The 1UP Awards were created to empower the true game critics -- the
gamers themselves -- to use their own experiences and opinions to determine
the best PC and console games of the year. Gamers will be able to vote for
their favorite titles, selected by 1UP Network's esteemed group of editors,
in 13 categories, including a brand-new category, "Best Console
Downloadable Game."

2007's stellar line-up of games has resulted in multiple nominations
for several leading game publishers, including 26 for Sony Computer
Entertainment America, 24 for Electronic Arts, 17 for Nintendo, and 12 for

So was Stranglehold, and I think that those 2 games are about the same as far as "goodness" goes

No, no, and hell no. I just gave my thoughts on it in the blogs.

After playing through and beating this game....no thanks. There's gotta be a better game than this out there.

It lists basically every really big name game that came out. Give a break.
Besides, for all you know they're thinking of the PC version when they made that nomination. :P You know, the GOOD version.

Kayne & Lynch is one of the worst action games I have played this year, mainly due to the terrible controls among other problems. Out of the list for action games I would gladly vote for God of War 2 or Contra 4 to win that award.

This entry (among other questionable ones) in their GOTY awards only solidifies 1up doesn't know what the fuck they're talking about.

So much for 1up supporting Gerstmann. Of course, they did practically include every game released this year >.>

This list just reconfirms how fucking lucky we as video gamers were this past year. I totally forgot how much damn pure fun I had when I played Crackdown. Overall most "fun" game of the year, IMO.

Other than that, there are some odd choices here and there, but decent I guess. I do want The Orange Box to win every category by default, though, just 'cause it deserves THAT much praise.

I'm really afraid Halo 3 will take the shooting and multiplayer crowns, though, if not the whole shebang, too. And, if you happen to play OTHER shooters (like CoD4 and TF2) you know that'd be a travesty to the highest degree.

Kane & Lynch was fun with a friend in campaign THE FIRST TIME.
but there is no replay value.
the cover system is broken.
the game was too short.
there were very few weapons.
the online part of it looks like it was not finished.

if Haze and Army of Two suck,
i will kill someone.

and Heavenly Sword?.. lame.

Paper Mario on Wii!!!?? .. not even good for a minute.
after playing for 4 hours, i gave it away.
pure crap.
the Gamecube Paper Mario was TONS better

ahhhh most of that list is crap

And quite a bit of the games listed there really don't deserve to be up there.

WTF? Kane & Lynch is fucking terrible. My brother-in-law brought it over on his PS# the other day and I attempted to like it.
I pretended I did so he didn't feel like he wasted his 60 bucks.....
but dear god..... I expected so much more from IO Interactive.

Hopefully they're just using all their resources to make the next Hitman game. The animation in Kane & Lynch looks like an early PS2 game. Plus on top of that, the framerate is amazingly horrible and it's not exactly clear what the fuck you're even supposed to be doing all the time.

I would've just liked to play Freedom Fighters again with now-gen graphics. Also..... the voices that Lynch hears when he's dying actually have a woman saying "I love you Lynch"...... what the fuck?
His old lady actually called him Lynch? Like it's his real name or something? Give me a fucking break. Also..... the sounds levels of the voice recording is out of control. You can hear the clipping when anyone yells loudly it gets distorted. It seems like it's some flimsy pirated Mexican version of the game it was supposed to be.

When I went to play CoD 4 afterwards, Kane & Lynch actually made me worse at CoD 4. The controls really fucked with my head.
Anyway, yeah...... why is it on that list?

I'd think that the whole Gamespot debacle would bring down the score on most user-review things, as people give it a low score purely out of protest. Not having played the game myself, I can't speak for or against it, but as mentioned previously, they included all the big-name games plus a few sleepers. Nothing wrong with that.

what is the point of selecting games and putting them on a nomination list when you are listing almost everygame that came out. Fuck, they even put games like Motorstorm on there, that game didn't even come out in 2007, it was a 2006 game.

I say we should mandate everybody to go register at 1up is they haven't already and vote Kane & Lynch as GOTY just so we can make them regret putting it on the list of nominations.

Why is it so cool to hate Kane and Lynch at the moment. I have a feeling that half of the people that despise the game wouldn't find it half bad if ol'tubbo had finished the game prior to review and not gotten fired over being lazy. Certainly it wasn't the game of the year but it had plenty of strongs points. And as for his name being Lynch, there are plenty of people in this world with the last name Lynch so I don't see why his name being Lynch would be something that detracts from the game.
Anyway, I hope people just forget about Jeff Fatzman or whatever his name is pretty soon. I think he shoulda been fired awhile ago personally as he always seemed to me at least, to be more interested in causing a stir than giving an objective opinion.

What the hell? Awards shows generally pick, like, five or so games to be nominated for each category. I just skimmed over the list because I didn’t feel like reading a list of all the halfway decent games that came out this year. They nominated The Simpsons Game in the Best Action Game category? Come on. And that’s just one of the poor decisions on there. NHL 08 for GOTY? Are you kidding me? My video game-illiterate mother could come up with a better list than this.

They're just doing this out of sympathy.

Orange box? are you joking? Sure it was a pretty good game but it was another FPS for a console plus games that had already been out for ages.

It really does look like the threw a bunch of random games in there. NHL and NBA street for GOTY?!

Anyway Math Effects wins. Haven't felt that way about a game in a long time. Totally involving and epic.

GOTY is a tie between Halo 3 and CoD 4 for me. I know, I'm mad original. It's part of my awesomeness.
