12% of Brits can't see 3D properly photo

Another day, another clue that this obsessive push towards 3D gaming might not be such a wonderful plan. According to The Eyecare Trust, 12% of British citizens can't see 3D images due to poor binocular vision, rendering 3D televisions, movies and games completely useless to them. Nice one!

"More than one in ten of us (12%) has a visual impairment that means our brains are unable to correctly process the individual images that are transmitted to it via our left and right eyes," reveals the organization. "This leads to an inconsistency in viewing the three spatial dimensions (height, width and depth) required to enjoy 3D films in all their glory."

This can be added to those who already wear glasses and still aren't sure how they're going to enjoy 3D, and those who are affected by the "eye strain, eye fatigue and nausea", that Sony has already had to warn us about. So yeah folks, this is the future of the videogame industry -- a future that excludes one in ten people with poor binocular vision, those of us wearing glasses, and anybody unfortunate enough to vomit everywhere after looking at 3D pictures for too long.

The future's bright, kids!

Maybe those 12% should try to wear two 3D-capable monocles :P

yup. been boycotting 3d films since I tried to see Avatar and yacked. Cursed with the nausea and eyestrain on top of being a glasses-wearer.

Fuck you 3D. Fuck you so hard.

This is true. Buddy of mine at best buy asked a rep from Samsung about this a little while ago since one of his friends is in this category and it's true. The rep said about 15% of people can't process 3D properly and don't see any of the 3D effects. So that 3D market companies are going after is 15% smaller than the previous HD push.

There also needs to be a certain percentage that thinks this 3D thing is gimmicky and unnecessary. Granted, I'm sure I'm in the minority as usual, but that might bring it to what.. 20-25% total now?

I've never seen 3D as anything necessary for the greater good; "GREATER GOOD"; pipe down back there. As I was saying it just seems rather stupid how obsessed companies are with it TV companies as well, and Sony's attempt to make 3D glasses seem like a fashion statement are laughable at best. They've made me laugh plenty of times. I personally see no use in 3D with the exception of pointy things coming near your face.

Stupid Numbers! There are Lies, Damn Lies, and then there is Statistics. But, seriously, taking this into consideration it seems as though the 3D Everything revolution is pretty gimped from the starting gate. What percentage of the populace is really financially prepared to upgrade to this new technology? Let's see, 12% out of the pool due to genetics... X % out due to the cost to get in on 3D enabled tech... Hmmm... What percentage remains viable as a customer base?

Ohh bitch bitch bitch. That's all Jimmy here seems to do. It's even worse when it gives him an opportunity to bitch about Sony. Some retards must read this article and assume that 3D gaming is being forced on the gaming community. It's not. If you don't want a 3D TV don't buy one. It'll be a long time (if ever) before a game or movie comes out that can only be played in 3D. If you were kicked cross eyed by a mule as a kid, and you're vision doesn't allow you to view 3D images don't worry. You'll still be able to play the game and watch the movie normally. I don't think Sony, or anyone else will throw all of their eggs into the basket marked 3D. They've just made the option available to those who want it.

You know those people that do not process 3D images might not process the world in 3D either? The input into the eyes of 3D tvs and games tries to resemble the real world, thus it could be seen a bit the same as the real world. Those people just cannot view the world like 88% of the world can.

I have have a friend who can see pretty badly with one eye in comparison to the other. This might be the impairment their talking about?

I think Jaffacakelover nailed it on his post. The optically challenged minority won't really factor into is this at all. A good parallel to the excluded 12% is the PSP and 3DS design. Left handed people constitute a similar number (around 12%-15% = random internet stats), but it hasn't prompted Sony or Nintendo to change the design to include a second configurable nub or a second version of the units for lefties. So, from what I'm seeing, devices that somewhat exclude a small minority still sell like gangbusters in the end IF the buy-in cost is reasonable.

I think I'm probably in that 12% too.

@Markez: The problem is the way your brain perceives the two different images in each eye, like say the polarized glasses and the red/blue are both kinda like seperate 2d images being sent to both eyes, but the glass over each eye only lets one version through. Without glasses though everybody gets headaches due to your brain getting sent garbage.

The nintendo way is like normal vision, so if u see the world in 3d, it should work for everybody, or as Elsa says, wait for the holodecks :)

The whole 3D bandwagon is a joke we don't need. For portables, I'll give it a pass due to 3DS, cause it can be switched off. What we don't know is if the same can be done with 3Dtvs. That will be the deciding factor in 3Dtvs fate.

If the simple act of watch tv becomes a catalyst to make people ill, Sony and co have a real problem, that they can easily be taken to court for, if something goes wrong with a customer. We know big companies hate litigation, just as much as the next guy.

@Bakewell (or anyone bitching about the price on a 3D TV)
I'm keeping a lazy eye on the market myself and the price difference between HD only and HDTV+3D is not that much. Right this moment you can buy a 50" 1080p Samsung 3D TV for $1799 at Future Shop. That's pretty comparable to what you'd pay for a regular HD TV that size.
