11-year-old 'genius' hates videogames photo

Moshe Kai Cavalin, an 11-year-old graduate from East Los Angeles College, is one smart little kid. However, he has proven that pure intelligence is no substitute for sense and taste, claiming that he doesn't like videogames as they are a waste of time. Even incredibly smart people can be retards, I suppose.

"I feel it's a waste of time playing video games because it's not helping humanity in any way," says Cavalin, who apparently can't do anything in life unless it directly helps his fellow man. One can assume that he never wastes time going to the toilet, eating or sleeping. I think it's a given he won't be having sex when he's older, either.

It's kind of worrying that he won't have fun, simply because he feels it's a waste of time. I suppose we're meant to admire him for dedicating his little life to the progress of our wretched species, but seriously dude, chill the bloody hell out. Wasting some time and having fun is important for a healthy brain.

Oh my god! I gotta stop playing videogames ASAP nad starting huggin trees or giving shoes to hobos in order to become a genius.

PS: If that kid doesn't like videogames, he isn't a genius.
PPS: Throw that kid in the fire, he's just creepy.

No need to worry, this kid may think he is a shining example for all to follow, but we all know that the bulb who burns brightest burns out.

Agree with bleep. To be a complete and balanced individual you can't work and study all the time. As a human being you need a balance of work, fun, and social life. If you don't have those things I think you're more of a drain on society. He'll realize that one day when a co-worker of his gets to leave early to catch his kid's baseball game and he gets stuck at work silently resenting his position in life. Also for a great example of this watch the Frank Grimes episode of the Simpsons.

It's interesting that people are classifying video games as necessary leisure for the most part, as opposed to something that "helps humanity"; I know that during certain rough patches in my life, certain games helped me a lot. Maybe it's selfish, but it also helped my friends and family who would have otherwise had to deal with a depressed (and probably annoying) individual. At least in my small circle, video games did help humanity.

Not that I agree with this kid (obviously), but some of you are making some rather rash assumptions about his personal life simply because he said "video games are a waste of time". While I enjoy the entertainment they offer, I can't help but think of the things I could have done in that time...I'd probably have 10,000 forum posts by now.

Maybe I should hold it in next time, and spend the time I could have spent shitting, saving humanity.

Of course they're pointless. No one can argue that.
But they're fun.

And all of you shouldn't be against him, that's just his opinion. What the hell do we care if the guy doesn't play videogames? Are you insulted? Is this in the way of your life style? Get over it.

Are you really picking on an 11 year old? Who cares if he thinks video games are a waste of time. He can live his life, and it in no way affects anyone else, it's not like he's advocating banning them.

Hell, if you actually read the article, he's a martial artist, too. That's a damn good way to stay in shape.

I'm no internet police scrub. But seriously, calling an 11 year old a retard 'cause he doesn't like to play videogames? Grow up.

If someone is presented to the world as a child genius, is the fact that their opinion can provoke a discussion wrong? It's automatically about "picking on them?" I don't buy it-- we're discussing ideas, not taking his lunch money.

Provoking discussion is one thing. Picking on an 11 year old who said he doesn't like videogames (when obviously it's quite a common question to ask oddball kids) is pointless.

Front page story calling an 11 year old a retard. That's thought provoking... how?

Child geniuses and child prodigies usually burn out quick. The child prodigies stay in the limelight until they get older and the public sees their genius merely as talent. Child geniuses usually realize that the world is full of shit and that it's more important to be happy in life, because whether or not you are remembered when you die is irrelevant (your fucking dead). Of course, if it makes you happy to "help your fellow man" as opposed to playing video games -- more power to you. I, however, currently happen to find happiness in 12 hour sessions of shocking the shit out of Reapers and Dust Men... Also, blowjobs.

@Loque: Actually, I'd say it's thought-provoking because it points out just how emotionally charged the word "retard" now is. Calling the kid a retard can't really be legitimately insulting because the only reason why this kid is in the news at all is because he's a GENIUS, but you obviously find it insulting. Why? Because it's not obvious that Jim is using hyperbole? Because you actually think that Jim doubts the kids mental faculties? No, you find it offensive for the sake of being offended.

Video games are almost directly responsible for how rapidly technology is advancing. If everybody just used their computers for e-mail and looking at websites, we'd all be on Pentiums (with MMX technology) and 32mb RAM. Video games are the next step of human evolution.

I give the kid props, he's more right than wrong. It wasn't that long ago there was no video games, internet, TV, radios...I assume kids back in the day got a long fine without having "tea-bagged" someone in Halo Deathmatch. Why I bet they could speak in full, unabbreviated English too.

Watch out, one day this kid will be flying spaceships and making contact with alien races.

counter argument!

I respectfully disagree. It is not the ones who can memorize old facts who discover new things, although it is necessary to have an understanding of old facts to make something new. It's the genius from the creative bracket, y'know who look at old things and can think of better uses for them (or who waste time making music and stories..), who push forward society. Tell me how a kid who can recite a text book and then get good grades on a standardized test would then be able to create a digitalized creature that can be controlled by the creator for entertainment purposes. Not possible, its the creative ones who make all our dreams possible.

I await your counter argument at dawn.

"One can assume that he never wastes time going to the toilet..."

Whoa whoa whoa... wait a minute. Using the boom-boom room is far from wasting time. I put a lot of time in keeping the sewage pond stocked with brown trout. So don't be telling me it's a waste of time. Without me, the species would die off.

He's a retard because he thinks that an activity that we enjoy is a waste of time?

Don't we all have activities that others seem to enjoy that we just plain don't "get"? Does that make us retards, as well, then?

I love video games, but I don't get all offended when someone says that they're a waste of time. I can see where they're coming from, even if I don't personally agree. Hell, we even call good casual games "time-wasters", for God's sake. Some of you are acting like he said that games are evil and we're all dipshits who should burn in hell.

At the end of the day, though, he's the 11 year old genius and you're writing blogs on a video game site. =]

He's right, though. Games are a waste of time and are in no way whatsoever productive. Guilty pressure, more or less. And everybody, stop trying to make video games seem bigger than they really are, bringing "industry and people keeping their jobs," and video games making you a "better person."

Please. Spare me.

The kid is wrong, bottom line. Anything done to entertain is a waste of time under his definition. Any sport, hobby, or activity is pretty much waste.

Or is it? Video games entertain me, and as far as I'm concerned, the meaning and purpose of life is to stay entertained until you die.

So having fun and relaxing through video games, baseball, or building model airplanes is an awesome way to spend your free time.

It doesn't take a genius to see that.

No matter how smart this kid is, the world is a much bigger place than it can ever imagine. It's not that he misses knowlege but also experience. Calling "nonsense" something that a lot of people find some meaning while graduating with a Liberal Science degree, sounds idiotic enough. This kid may be a genious but it's not wise.

Also, are you guys predicting that he will fail (or "crash"), or just hoping for it? LOL @ the assertion that those that are driven will always crash at some point. Some people just like to be busy all the time. If there are those that would prefer to do nothing at all, all day long, why would there not be those on the other end of the spectrum? Perhaps this kid thinks of learning as an enjoyable experience?

I just love how a couple of really non-inflammatory sentences from an 11-year old kid can get some of you guys fired up. It's not as if his *OPINION* on your hobby can take away the way you felt when you beat a really hard game or the fun you had playing with friends, so calm down.
