I once knew a girl who was pre-Med, but thought that all fiction was "pointless". I couldn't understand how someone so smart could be so stupid, if that makes any sense.
Well said Jim.
11-yr old genius owned.
THE SUN WILL TAKE THIS AS FACT AND THE DAILY MAIL WILL TAKE IT AS LOGICAL.
Video games are great forms of entertainment. People who turn them into their primary focus are nuts, but relative to other entertainment mediums like TV, and you need to have one or another, video games are fantastic.
On one side is the kid who can memorize a text book and pass all his classes and graduate before he's a teenager and......go be a doctor or something? If that's even legal....
On the other we have people who can learn instruments and play and create any music they want, create compelling stories that we all enjoy, and overall do things that truly benefit others. Entertainment!
so which is the true genius?
Not that that makes this kid right, but I can see a lot of responses veering towards the idea of "kids should play games all day, that's what kids do!", and I don't agree with that either.
But he`s still wrong. I`m going to be presumptuous and say some overprotective parents gave him a messiah complex. If he thinks he`s going to reach his creative potential by becoming a utilitarian bot, he needs some Fountainhead quick.
Both are geniuses, both contribute to society in different ways. These "regurgitators" of facts go on to discover new things. You have to learn the old stuff before you can learn the new stuff. After all, physicists and engineers discovered everything that led to the creation of the industry that we love.
So, genius or not he is not very well informed.
He just wants everyone to be a Med Doctor by the age of 15 so you can retire when you are 30 years old. THEN you can play games for the remaining 70 years of your life.
Damn... He is smart...
Of course this is not a black and white issue here. Im sure there may be a video game someday with will change and influence people in a way that makes them want to do better. As for the most part, games are an fun, entertaining, artful waste of time.
If we all stopped playing games (which Im not going to do), you would be amazed at what some of us would do with that extra time.
@sicPOS
If you think that going out and helping make the world a better place, or reading a book is boring... Id like to know what it is youre doing thats so much fun.
Oh well to each his own. I wonder what he thinks of anime... it's entirely likely his opinion will change when he gets older. No one stays the same 1-20.
And I clearly love video games and think they offer plenty to people. Stress relief, socialization, hell my wife and I got along so well when we were dating because we both played Dr. Mario and Klax on the NES together.
Point being, this kid is a twit, and he's trying to sound smart.
maybe?
I think, and would like to think, that would Branson and Jim mean is that people who contribute new ideas to their industry, whether it's a technical science or something we would typically consider artistic, are superior to people who just know a lot. I don't think he means being a musician is better than being a physicist. I think he means that being a creative forethinkiner in either field is better than memorizing facts, or riffs.
his definition of "helping humanity in any way" might be different than yours or mine
Purchasing a game and playing it means you're supporting an industry that employs many people around the world. Helping them keep their jobs shows you're participating in the global economy and thus surely helping humanity right?
what influences has he had in his life that change how he values his time
I don't know this kid, but I can assume that his parents are involved in his academic excellence and have instilled their values in him. Graduating from any university at a young age requires dedication to study habits and adherence to scheduling those study sessions. So its likely he has been taught that playing video games are a waste of time because their interfere with his schedule.
and most of all --> does this kid have any friends
Video games are traditionally a solo activity, however that trend has changed more and more in recent years with the advent of the internet and online play. I think this "genius" needs to understand that social interaction and activities that allow others to relate to him will only make him a better, more balanced, person. Which will in theory will allow him to help more people in the future. So at his young age there is certainly a lot of growing up still to be done, and it is understandable that he might not see playing video games a good way to accomplish it..... But there is still time.
On a different note, I hope he doesn't go to Catholic church too often. We all know that smart 11 year old's are the juiciest ones. Also cue giant depression at 18-25 and one hell of a mid-life crisis later on. A lack of video game playing in current day youth is a bigger indicator of social problems than playing games is a waste. Like bleep said: perhaps his idea of helping humanity in 20-30 years is the kind that megalomaniac movie villains share. And all that because he had no friends and his mommy pushed him too hard as a kid :(
