Microsoft has announced today that sales of the Xbox 360 have exceeded the 10 million unit mark in the U.S., with over 19 million sold globally. Microsoft are also very excited about the Xbox 360 being the first current-generation console in the U.S. to break the 10 million unit mark.
"History has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation battle," said Microsoft's Don Mattrick. "We are uniquely positioned to set a new benchmark for the industry."

Xbox 360 First Gaming System to Reach 10 Million in U.S. Console Sales This Generation
Xbox LIVE tops 12 million members globally as Xbox 360 console sales hit more than 19 million worldwide
REDMOND, Wash. — May 14, 2008 — Microsoft Corp. today announced that the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system has sold over 10 million units in the U.S., making it the first current-generation gaming console to break the 10 million mark in the U.S. The U.S. install base contributes to global sales of over 19 million, more than any other current-generation console.
“This year will be the largest in the history of the video game industry, with Xbox 360 leading the charge in the U.S. and abroad,” said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business in the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. “History has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation battle. We are uniquely positioned to set a new benchmark for the industry.”
This announcement comes on the heels of one of the biggest entertainment launches in history, “Grand Theft Auto IV,” on April 29, 2008. Gamers eager to experience “Grand Theft Auto IV” online helped boost Xbox LIVE global membership to over 12 million this month. Fueled by an unparalleled combination of access to friends and family, the best online gaming features, and the best entertainment content, the Xbox LIVE service has doubled in membership in only one year’s time.
“Reaching an installed base of 10 million consoles in the U.S. is a significant achievement and an essential milestone on the road to market leadership,” said Billy Pidgeon, research manager at IDC. “Perhaps more important is the Xbox 360 worldwide online base — 12 million Xbox LIVE gamers is the largest community in the connected console games sector, which represents the greatest growth opportunity in the console market and where Microsoft has been the leader for two generations.”
Xbox 360 leads with the industry’s highest software attach rate, more than any other console this generation, and is home to the best-selling games. With the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV in April, Xbox 360 is now the home to more than 16 platinum titles that have sold through one million units or more including hits like “Halo 3,” “Madden NFL 07” and “Madden NFL 08,” “Gears of War,” “Guitar Hero II” and “Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock” and “Call of Duty®2, Call of Duty®3 and Call of Duty®4: Modern Warfare™,” giving Xbox 360 two times more platinum-selling titles than the Wii and a 16:2 lead over the PlayStation 3 in game titles topping one million in sales.Games not only sell better on the Xbox 360, they play better, too: Xbox 360 has 91 titles with a Metacritic review score of 80 or higher, compared with just 22 titles for Wii and 50 titles for PlayStation 3.

It's not game quality that's important, or making hardware that dosen't break.
It's the total sales in the U.S!
Hooray!
So there
WE GOT DEM TERRISTS!
noobs.
trolls.
I know man. Game quality is everything. That's why I love my 360! Besides having the games that are identical to the PS3, it's seen many high quality first party titles to boot. I still can't imagine why you'd want to own a PS3 over a 360.
What I don't like is the hardware manufacturers devotion to the idea that 10 million sales means "they won". This buisness, ultimatly, isn't about the consoles, and it isn't about the marketing-incensed factionalization of the brands. It's about the game quality. I find it to be duplicitous for Microsoft to think they "won" because of hardware sales.
I care about game quality, and nothing else. I didn't mean to indicate that the 360's lineup of games was bad.(Though the machines shoudn't be breakin'!)
Btw, that joke wasn't funny when they made it about Sony so its not really funny now either but I'm assuming that you actually have a brain and that is a huge mistake on my part.
And good for MS, unlike the little white turd, they actually have the software to back up those sales numbers, the 360 is easily the best gaming console on the market as of now.
For those still on the fence of buying a gaming machine, here's a handy guide.
If you want quality software but hardware prone to breaking, get a 360.
If you want a small amount of quality of software BUT a machine that has great future potential, get a PS3.
If you want to play the exact same games you've been playing for the last 10 years and throw away $250, get a Wii.
If you want to play one good game every 6 months, get a gaming PC.
plz use that 10million profits to fix your shitty ass console.
The true figure if only incorporating a count of only one per person would be much less.
I CALL SHENANIGANS!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!111
Bhaaaad Micro$oft, down... down.. (hits company over the nose with newspaper).
Though, yeah, you would think by now they would have fixed the problems associated with the RROD.
Or maybe, just MAYBE, PS3 fanboys ran out of shit to fling so they are recycling an old one.
Sounds like a victory to me.
Or maybe, just MAYBE, PS3 fanboys ran out of shit to fling so they are recycling an old one."
@ SEXYCOMMANDO - Ibought my 360 lkast June and it E74 on me last week (3 weeks just under 1 year warranty). I I was luck to get it fixed under warranty (as not RROD so no 3yrs cover). The manufacture date on mine was December 2006.
So yes they still feck up, also I am a very careful owner. Now I am left with only my PS3 until the 360 is fixed (5 days and still in transit to be fixed) which I am still to find a use for apart from playing Bluray movies.
The only thing the PS3 has is hot shots golf (called Everybodys golf here) over the4 360.
BTW I am neither a 360 or PS3 fanboy (they both annoy me in there own way).
BTW I just had to quote you there again as that is very ROFLMAO material, OPEN YOUR EYES ON THE XBOX FORUMS!!!
Only one thread do they allow you to post your "my xbox is dead" posts... all new threads get deleted for obvious reasons.
Trust me they are still dying, even the newer ELITES.
I guess with all this winning, MS is rolling in cash from their X-Box division...oh wait, they spent all their meagre profits on warranty extensions for shitty hardware!
If they want to use sales numbers to indicate winning, perhaps they should have a look at the Wii's numbers, which, without supply issues, would have passed them already. Plus Nintendo is making money hand over fist, what with not having broken hardware requiring expensive warranty repairs and all.
Outside the USA, Sony is outselling the 360 at almost 2 to 1 in PAL, and in Japan, well...
Long story short: MS haven't won shit.
In fact, I'm one of the (guesstimated) seven people to own a 360 in Germany. We're having a party when we hit that magic ten. Hookers and Blackjack all around. In fact, forget the blackjack. Hookers and UNO!
Sorry, just felt like starting a different argument.
Brilliant!!
As a matter of fact, I'm sure there's just a few dozen lonely HALO fans in the US that account for all the 360 sales. Right! They've all neatly arranged stacks of hundreds of RROD'd (I hope the English language forgives me for turning this abomination of an acronym into an adjective) XBboxes in their respective basements, resembling homophobic forts of some sort. Yeah, these heroes, far and few between, struggle each day to fulfil their duties; which include, inter alia, trolling on forums, keeping the MS conspiracy alive, and, of course, being a dick on Live.
It all makes sense now.
Think about it.
