1 vs. 100 writers love RENT, also impressions of the game photo

Last night I participated in my first session of Xbox LIVE Primetime title, 1 vs. 100. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the live version. Instead, I played what Microsoft calls “Extended play” -- a version of the game where the “mob” is infinitely large and the “one” is omitted from the game. Much to my surprise, this base version was entertaining and challenging.

Here’s the game's set up: in Extended play, you answer questions without worrying about the "one." Simple, right? Your competition is against a group of four players as opposed to the 58-60,000 members that may be in your game at the time. You’re awarded points for answering questions accurately and quickly and given bonus points for rocking questions that the majority of players answer incorrectly.

My matches lasted between 15 and twenty minutes. Commonly, the game ended on question 37, although I suspect the game is intended to end on question 40. Slow people give slow answers.

Speaking of answers, I have to admit, I was out of my league. I’m not much of a pop culture fanatic and I also haven’t seen RENT. Both of these things are a problem. Between 6:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. I answered three questions about RENT incorrectly and zoned out on questions about Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey.

Still, there was fun to be had, however, I attribute it to the game's laid back nature. My girlfriend eventually joined my couch party and was smitten with the simple interface (three buttons, ftw). This helps me, because if you’re Avatar is active, you’ll get an increased chance to be in the "mob" and eventually the "one" in the live version -- two things that could net you real prizes in the future.

For those of you who have participated, tell us what you think. Or take the time to explain to me what the hell RENT is all about. I want to nail the game tonight.

I got the third RENT question correct by answering "Three." Quality logic. I'm really surprised how fun and high quality 1 vs. 100 is. My friends and I had a a blast.

I played the extended play version and the live one the day before and enjoyed both. The questions were pretty varied (except the Rent ones which I came across a lot too) and way up to date. There was one asking about what was stolen from Kevin Bacon in a subway which happened this week.

So yeah. Fun stuff and the possibility of earning real prizes is pretty cool.

I heard RENT actually makes you gay if you watch it all the way through the credits. Urban legend? Watch and see!

I played the day before in the normal version, and both E3 edition Extended Play games. VERY cool game.

I've played every night of the US beta so far and have had alot of fun doing so. My wife enjoyed it the first night even though she didn't know all the gaming questions and my kids have had fun watching us play even though they don't know any of the questions. They like to chant "Mob! Mob! Mob! Mob!" when the 'host' asks the One to choose the money or the mob.

I've gotten to play in the Mob once which was fun until I stupidly hit the wrong button once. Thankfully, they aren't giving out prizes for real yet.

My only complaint so far is stuff that is related to this just being a beta. The audio on the host doesn't come through sometimes, the ads don't always play, and the breaks are too often. Good mix of questions and the E3 themed nights on Saturday were good. Hopefully they will have more theme nights for extended play.

I played the first night it was available in the U.S. and made it into the mob once. It was pretty fun, all in all. In the crowd I was going for speed so I flubbed a few questions by hitting the wrong button by accident (I suck at QTEs), but once in the mob I took my time to make sure I got it right and wasn't booted. Once the real thing goes live and prizes are on the line I'll probably be playing this every chance I get. It's fun and assuming you can get in the mob/be "the one" it should be an easy way to earn some free MS points.

I've played it two nights, too. I'm pretty much on board with everyone so far, especially about the breaks. The need to cut the frequency and add to the length of the breaks. And maybe add a countdown timer. God forbid you're on a good streak and have to use the loo or smoke a cancer stick or something... I missed my first question on extended play somewhere in the 30s (i think) that way...

Question: Anyone find themselves OVERusing the "pass" options you build up in extended play? I second-guessed myself out of points every time i passed...

I've played twice and it was blast. I was under the impression that if you were in the Mob or 'The One.' Then you accually won MS Moneys to spend in the Market Place. After a round, depending on if the mob or the one won, it would show how many points people won... is that not true? Yet..?

nademagnet - prizes are not being given out during the Beta. Once it goes live, prizes will be given out.

KIDA26 - Yes, there is a set schedule. Check the 1 vs 100 page for the schedule. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/1vs100/

@kida
yes, but there are a shit-ton of scheduled times. As for the live show that they give out prizes, it just wouldn't be viable to give out hundreds of free prizes every single night.

I think right now they're only offering a contest entry for each correct question you answer in the Mob or as The One...might be wrong about the specifics though. I played the first night last week and it seemed way too easy to get into the Mob; a lot of people couldn't even get into the game. It seems pretty fun, though by making the shows on Friday and Saturday nights they pretty much assume a lot of Live users have nothing else to do then.

I saw this was out, played it and loved it (I'm a big fan of those bar trivia whatchamacallits), and the only thing I hate is its limited schedule.

RENT is a mediocre modernization of La Boheme; an opera about starving artists. It's primary boost to fame was that the writer, suffering from AIDS, died the week before it's premier. How's that for media attention?

My friends and I have decided that once I finish writing my opera, we're going to pay a hobo to pretend he wrote it and push him in front of a bus the week before the premier. If we can make it look like a suicide, it will tie in to the story nicely.
