1 million served: Gran Turismo 5 time trial demo photo

We didn't hear this, but we believe Kotaku on this. Sony says that the Gran Turismo 5 demo...thingy has been downloaded over 1 million times since its release last month. That's a lot of people racing the same one car around the same one track. And everyone was good with that?

I would love to see the stats on how long that one demo was played. Of course, the people trying to win the prize for having the top time in this time trial are going to retry. And racing game whores like myself will repeat play. But for the masses, for the gamers that don't "get it," and for the ones looking for a visual thrill and not necessarily a simulation -- well, I'd bet they played it for 2 minutes, spun out, and then shut it off. Nothing against the game, of course. I'm still excited about it. I just know that GT isn't for everyone, and I would have liked to see a fancier demo come out.

As you may have heard, they're still behind on the game. Maybe the lackluster demo came from this situation.

Until they make the cars shoot guns, I think I'll pass.

I think they are referring to the one million downloads in the PAL regions (Europe, Australia and New Zealand) and I'd guess that most people gave the demo a good go to try and enter the competition before realising they'll never win.

I downloaded it and played for about 5 minutes. Too much realism is not fun.

I'm thinking the majority of people that DLed it knew what they were getting into.

It's a sim racing game, and frankly, it's not that hard to stay no the road so long as you're not flooring the brakes and turning a the same time.

Brake, AND THEN turn. This is why so many people spin out and get in fender benders whenever there's a little bit of ice on the road in real life. No one's teaching people how to ACTUALLY handle cars in these more extreme conditions.

FORZA IS MOAR BETTAR LOLZ
Actually, I liked the demo but I wonder why it is taking a geological age for them to make this game. Gran Turismo: Forever?

I tried it for a few minutes, the controls felt good, and car performed well, it was just that the game was so bland. There was no style or substance in the game. And the world was extremely ugly. After that I unplugged my ps3 and plugged in my 360 and put in forza 3 and had a blast.

It is practically 2 cars being as the tuned version is so much different than the stock version.

And if you can't stop spinning out, maybe you should quit driving around FWD eco-fag-cars and lrn2drive a real car.

I've certainly spent more time in it than other demos. I know I have no chance with the competition but I still have a lot of fun improving my lap times. When I end up doing that, I know I'm playing a solid racing sim.

If the final version is anything like that time trial thing they released a few weeks ago, then god save us. It was not good. At all. But the file was only 286MB (!) so I'm wondering if it was gimped just make it easier for everyone to jump in.

Worth noting for people bitching about the car handling, driving aids are all disabled in the demo. So no traction control or anti-lock breaks. As for flashy stuff, my big kick in a GT game is embarking on that grand globe-trotting career and doing whatever events I want, which is a freedom I didn't feel in Forza 3.

Also driving tests and endurance races.

The delays are all surely because they've had to raise their game since Forza3 came out. Not trying to instigate a fanboy war, but things like damage seemed to be of no concern to Polyphony previously. And it has reputedly become more sim'y. Anyone who thinks this isn't in response to the competition is deluded.

I do home they make this the best GT yet, and have everything the fans want: gorgeous graphics, involving handling, intuitive control, interesting and flexible career, challenging licenses and punishment for playing multiplayer like a tosser. Oh, and a great soundtrack and intro movie :)
