A few months ago, I went on an all-out Game Boy binge, playing and replaying essentially everything worth touching. Those old games hold up shockingly well, and for all the 8- and 16-bit love shown in the independent scene, not enough current games try to recapture the essence of the Game Boy.
This game, 1-bit Ninja by kode80, though -- hot damn. He (Ben Hopkins) knows what I'm talking about. The intent was to create a platformer "specifically for touch screen, with controls that didn't suck." As such, there are only two "buttons" for controlling your character, with a third used to give you a 3D perspective.
1-bit Ninja hits iPhone and iPod touch later this month. Can't wait.
Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied: "bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

there should be a button for walking backwards tho maybe? I can see myself walking too far and then going ARHGYHE&%€&/(/&%&/() and breaking my phone : p
The phrase "n-bit" doesn't really mean anything. It used to be the graphics processor's word size, which imposed a number of technical limits, such as color palette and resolution. The Game Boy had an 8-bit processor (just a CPU, not a GPU) and 2-bit color. This doesn't have 1-bit ANYTHING. Even taking away the gradient backgrounds, there's still at least four visible colors in this game: black, white, gray, and transparent.
Actually, I love the Game Boy as well.I liked Tower of Heaven more than I probably should have; I bought the soundtrack, for instance. But this game just doesn't look good.
I'm a bit disappointed that the gimmicky 3D perspective, originally just looking to be a pointless option, is required to see hidden passages. It seems weird to put a "stop playing and study the view" mechanic in a game that otherwise seems to be about forward momentum.
I love seeing what indie devs come up with. Can't wait for this to hit the App Store so I can check it out. Now I want to run through a bunch of GameBoy platformer games. Esp. Super Mario Land 2, I loved that game.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
