Yay! Another person that makes me feel inadequate!
I have been fiddling around in the LittleBigPlanet beta for about a week now and have not even come close to creating anything this unbelievably impressive. PSN user Upsilandre has created a level in LittleBigPlanet featuring an actual working calculator.
Now, at first this seems kind of boring and almost shrug-worthy. But before you dismiss it, keep in mind that there is nothing in LittleBigPlanet that allows you to just easily create something that adds and subtracts numbers. Upsilandre constructed this ingenious gizmo using more than 1600 parts, including 610 magnetic switches, 500 wires, and 430 pistons.
Honestly, I can’t even begin to comprehend how he/she even attempted to do this.
What do you think? Are you impressed by the level of skill shown in some of these early LittleBigPlanet levels? Like me, are you embarrassed to even show your creation to the world now? What do you think levels will look like once the game finally hits retail (I may as well start hanging my head in shame now)?

Is there anything that can make me love this game any more than it is now? My head's gonna explode when I pick this up at launch just from how awesome it is.
Ya know, there are times I think games today never challenge us as thinkers. Videogames never push us to create or question. I can’t remember the last time I sat puzzled in the raw technical beauty of something so simple.... fuck my COD4 map just loaded... What was I saying? Who needs thinking when you gotz head esploding to do. (Perpetuating American stereotypes since 1984!)
Now this all interesting from a academic, tech demo point of view. But is it actually a fun game to play. Emphasis on fun.
Remember Second Life people? You can do tons of shit there too, but its not a game. Its more like virtual world tool for creative folks who like fucking in animal suits.
Little Big Planet sure looks nice, but are we to expect that the average joe will get the same enjoyment as somebody who spends 100 hours making a complex grandfather clock.
Honestly this looks more and more like a really cool tech demo, and great for those creative types who like making levels and amateur video games....but what about us folks who just want to play game?
Please dont' flame me, I'm not a troll. This is an honest concern that I have.
byrc, it's a game. It's not free roaming like Second Life. You can make levels where you can win or lose. It's a game, and it's fun.
LBP is pretty much obviously not catered to average Joe, since it really pushes the whole "create" thing, which the "average" guy probably won't be interested in.
In essence, if it doesn't look good to you, don't play it.
1600 parts, including 610 magnetic switches, 500 wires, and 430 pistons...Well first I'm greatly impressed that someone can, by use of LBP ingame objects, make a functioning calculator. I mean, that's just sick. I also like that we have a video game that inspires creativity and construction.
On the flipside why put so much ingenuity into playing a video game when you could be making Kelly LeBrock clones in your bedroom?
As for the question "Is it going to be any fun?", It will be fun for those who are creative and/or enjoy the inspiring work of others.
While I'm quite sure there will be plenty of fun stuff for those who choose not to create (via disc content and other users). If it doesn't interest you, ignore it.
I'm sick of people just commenting to say they "don't get it"
This is entirely possible - the very first calculators resembled such things (with out the LCD of course). In fact, Charles Babbage made a Difference engine, a mechanical device, which could do differential equations with the simple pull of a lever. I wonder if someone could make Babbage's difference engine in LBP. Now THAT would be impressive.
For all you people asking whether there will be a game...OF COURSE THERE WILL. LBP is just as much of a game as any other side scroller out there -> Mario, Sonic, etc...but even more complex and with unlimited possibilities for levels. Did Tony Hawks Pro Skater stop being a game when it included a level editor and a character creator? NO! This is the same thing here. People are just showing off their creations because this is the other side of LBP that inspires people to create. People like to show off their inventions or creations, rather than just play a level and record it...anyone can do that. Not everyone has the same level or creativity though, so that is what people are wanting to show off.
Get your heads straight people, there is a game here.
To the obvious 360 fanboys, nothing is going to impress you. To admit that this has massive potential would be nothing short of blasphemy.
For the PS3 owners that aren't sure, consider that while we're seeing a lot of 'tech demo' emerging from LBP at this point, this is because people are pushing it to see what they can create, how far they can break the rules of the game, and what kind of potential it offers to wannabe builders.
But even if you aren't a builder, if you find the single player videos at all appealing, you're going to have a world of people creating more of that for you, with new levels, new gametypes, new challenges... Consider it in line with a game like Unreal Tournament. You might not be a UT map maker, but the fact that the game has such a huge fan modder base means that for the life of the game, you never run out of new content to enjoy.
Personally, I don't understand how anyone could not be at the very least intrigued by what LBP has to offer, and curious as to where people will take it.
NightDehumidifier: Primitive programming game? O_o I'd say that a functional CPU built up of ~2000 components and working in real time is anything BUT primitive. On the flip side, nice humor in your blog.
Woverine: Seems you missed most of the LBP videos. There's obviously quite a substantial single player and multiplayer component. Not to mention the content that others will make for you to play. Just because we're seeing the crazy shit people are coming up with doesn't mean the rest of it was scrapped.
I'm gonna have to say you can. LBP has of course always looked interesting to me, but now... well, now I just hope they drop the price on the PS3 soon so I can get in on this action.

Still that is soooo crazy and I bet it took a boat load of time to do!
No, seriously. I'm jealous.

That would be the most epic thing ever created in the history of Humans.
Crazy go nuts....

Will this "game" be fun to play?

Hell this game could teach plenty. Design, Engineering, Modelling, even teach kids various skills too.
This isn't a game, it's a lifestyle! *counts pennies to see if he can afford a PS3*
I'm not gonna go buy a whole new system for it, but still pretty awesome.
Seriously this level was made out of pure AWESOME
:| So elaborate.
