[UPDATE] Rumortoid: Nintendo making a new HD Wii, will have a storage solution photo

In a fairly in-depth report from What They Play, it was been suggested that Nintendo is privately showing off a “complete refresh” of the Wii console that would include high-definition capability. A shadowy source that was consulted in the article revealed that the new console will arrive in 2011, right when first HD resolution television comes off factory presses.

The new Wii is being dubbed by developers as the “Wii HD” and is being looked at much like the transition from Gameboy to Gameboy Color. Wii HD will consist of all the previous staples of the regular Wii, right down to the lack of a reliable storage device even though more DLC is one of the alleged enhancements surrounding the console.

This rumor is based on a source person and an elaborate money trail that Nintendo has left behind in regards to research and development. Its only real substantiation is the source person. Regardless, Wii HD is certainly an interesting proposition.

Do you guys want a new Wii revision? Do you feel like it will be needed considering the amount of cash Nintendo will presumably continue to make on the casual console?

[via Gamepro]

[UPDATE: A man couldn't be any more wrong. Thanks a bundle, Chad. I checked out the source again and read this passage:

...new system will feature some form of local storage medium such as a hard drive or large flash memory solution

So this means that I am an idiot AND according to the rumor, we may actually have a solution for our storage woes. Awesome.]

Won't Happen until they release the other colors of the Wii.

Wii hasn't been milked to death enough.

That's just fucking dumb, they better upgrade a lot more than just giving it HD. I hate you so much Nintendo

Considering the effort most developers put into the graphics of their Wii games, HD isn't really necessary. In fact, it would probably highlight just how lazy some developers are if it were in HD.

However, I think it's still painfully obvious that before high definition on the priority list, a hard drive, or at least the ability to play directly from SD cards, should be in the works. The storage now is an abomination, and I say that as a person who has completely filled up his Wii's flash memory, and has had to go through the unnecessarily lengthy process of moving things to an SD just to make room for new stuff.

I heard somewhere else that it would fix the storage problem and that the difference in graphics compared to the normal Wii was like an original Gameboy compared to a GBA.

There has to be a solution of some kind, maybe not directly in the wii but surely their not that dumb.

As long as I can still play my Wii and GCN games, I'll happily upgrade to the new version.

If it really does come out in 2011, that's right about inline for a 5 year console cycle.

I think there is a similar rumor that the Wii HD will have ample storage space. :)

HD capability is nice...but why in 2011? And why are they completely ignoring complaints about storage space?

Nintendo, I love you guys, but you've really got to get on the ball here. -.-u

(of course, that's assuming that the rumor is 100% factual, which I'm not entirely convinced of...)

I wonder why bother? The majority of people who care about those things are hardcore gamers, and if Nintendo keeps us the slower-than-usual trickle of quality titles that gamers want (not the mainstream), there won't be many of us left buying Nintendo in 3 years.

So we'll have an updated system with lazily developed third party games and unimaginative first party sequels to play?

If they really do this i'm selling my Wii and buying a 360 or a PS3. WTF, i bought my Wii less than a year ago, i don't want to change it already. And it means that the classic-Wii model will have only shovelware, since Nintendo and presumably third party companies will develop for this "HD Wii".
I doubt this is true tough, it would be a stupid financial move.

HDMI(or at least anything upto 720p) and a nice, large HDD would be welcome any time. Make sure it's still as easy to pirate too.

Nintendo wouldn't announce a new system 2 and a half years out when their old system is selling as well as it is. It'd kill all momentum on the system. I'd wager it'll be at least another year or more before we hear anything hard and fast about a new system.

This especially won't happen when the new system's only upselling features are things people blissfully ignore when they buy the system today.

Anybody that even tries to promote a rumour of an "HD Wii" instantly qualifies for being mentally handicapped. The very concept doesn't make a goddamn bit of sense. Bumping up the resolution of a game isn't going to make it look a whole lot fucking better when it will still have the graphical limits of a 7 year old system. You've been able to do that on PC ports of games from the last generation forever, and usually it just shows off how low res the textures are in older console games. Hell there were even a few X-Box 1 games that could run in 720p.

I think this is a bad move all the way.. Like most people have said on here, it would kill the sales of the WII. Plus Third party are F'n lame to really need HD to make a game look good.. I wish they would put some effort into the games..

so your saying that nintendo have been showing the wii hd to people wich is coming in 2011
but they forgot to show anyone the wiimotion plus till after it was announced

riiiiiiight sounds likely

You couldnt have a HD wii anyway as most of the game are pre coded to run at 480p res.

Unless they throw in a faster GPU to keep the framerate the same.

and then force games to run at HD res by hardware level it won't happen.

and even then it probley will not happen since that screw with the speed and timing of games and will lead to compatible hardware issues.

it is not a PC where games are made ot work with all speeds and kinds of gpu at many resoltions.

OIh and as for the hardrive.

unless they fix there DRM wich is some of the worse ever that ties, all downloads to one wii

they are not going to get any pre existing buyers to upgrade.

and the ones who have 0 download content obviously do not care about downloads enough to buy one and they still got plenty of space.

hell i downloaded 1 game ever AKA mega man 9 and i still got gobs of space
Cube's Avatar - Comment posted on 10/01/2008 21:28

and one last thing.

a 8 gb sd card is enough space to hold every NES game ever made every SNES and every single genesis game with space left over.

and yes i did the math using the biggist cart from every console then applying it to the known libary.

and i may or may not have them coped on a DVD..

why do we need hard disk with wii when these new big ass SD cards are fine for the wii needs?

except for wii ware the roms of virtual console games take almost nothing.

and really who downloads wii ware?

There's no reason for Nintendo to make Wii capable of higher resolutions. As such, I really don't think this is going to happen. If it does, though, then I'll sell my Wii and never purchase another Nintendo console again. Hell, buying a console in general is getting to sound like a pain-in-the-ass. You buy one, then something else that's BETTER comes out to replace it. This multi-SKU thing is getting really out-of-hand.

Wait a second! Isn't that exactly what people want? Isn't that the thing that people (I'm sure yourself included) bitch about all the time about the Wii? That's its not a HD console, and doesn't have a hard drive.

So now that Nintendo is going to be doing that with the next console in 2011 (you know 3 years from now) you're saying its dumb. What the hell do you want them to do? Nintendo said they are going HD with the console before the Wii even was the Wii. So how this would come as a shock to anyone is beyond me!

I saw a nintendo wii tied to an HD set, and it was f*ck ugly indeed. Giving it an HD option does not necessarily mean developers have to come up with life-like graphics, simple graphics running at hd resolutions still look nice.

Couldn't HD Wii games be backwards comp for the original Wii merely without HD, like Gameboy Color was on the gray brick?

But that wouldn't be the Nintendo way. The answer for every console tweak is a new system.
