[UPDATE] Rumortoid: Afrika coming west according to a Sony representative photo

High on many PlayStation 3 owner’s list of “want to import” is Sony’s Pokemon Snap-ish title, Afrika. Despite every gamer’s desire to take pictures of African wildlife, Sony has often stated that the Japanese title would not be localized. But according to a Sony representative at a recent Sony Cameras event (via CVG), this may all change.

The representative told journalists that Afrika would be hitting Europe next year. He didn’t elaborate on the process or when the decision was made. He also didn’t comment on how sweet it is to take pictures of lions.

Afrika is certainly an intriguing title for me. I wasn’t a big fan of capturing the Zubat portrait in Pokemon Snap, but I have a feeling taking a picture of a zebra is easier than capturing imaginary bats in a cave while riding on a mine cart.

I assume the reason why Sony has declined to take the title westward entails lack of interest. Would any of you buy Afrika? If not, would you buy it if there was a gun mod?

[UPDATE: VG247 has a quote from an SCEE representative who shoots this down quite spectacurlarly. The rep said:"I can now confirm that there are currently no plans to release Afrika in Europe."]

A Eurogamer import review addresses "gun mod" question by answering a gamefaqs youngster who asked:

"Can you run over small animals in this game? i read somewhere that later on in the game you can drive yourself around, so they better make it realistic so you can run over a lion or something or break its legs off."

Personally I'd pick it up if the price was reasonable, if only to support this kind of quirkiness in the hopes that they'll port shiki-tei.

I've been really intrigued by Afrika since they first announced it. It seems like the type of title that could appeal to both hardcore and casual gamers, so why not bring it to the US?
If Sony USA is gunshy, they should just release it as a PSN game. No hassle, little cost.

Seems like an interesting game. However, I don't think I would be willing to fork over full retail price for a game like that. I think I'd rather look at professional pictures online than take some crappy amateur shots of pixelated animals.

Do animals attack if you get too close?! I'd buy it if it were on the PSN for a less than full retail pric and animals were ruthless if invading their space to make it worth my while.

I'd be all over it if the price was $30 or less. Just give me a few months before releasing it. The fall line up will easily put me deep into the summer.

I am only slightly ashamed to say I enjoyed Pokemon Snap and that I would probably get this game if it came to the U.S.

Why are all the minor nintendo franchises coming out on the PS3 now? Wipeout is basically F-Zero and Afrika is basically Pokemon Snap.

i just recently imported afrika, and it is very very heavy in japanese text. so i bet it would take some time to translate and localize. i cant read japanese but its still cool to play.

and yes animals do charge or attack if you get to close.
