Remember the guy who said "The way you manufacture a Wii is you take two GameCubes and duct tape. It's not clear to me that Nintendo gives a sh*t about gaming as an art form". Yeah, that was Chris Hecker, and he just got laid off from Maxis. Ironic, as he worked on the original Spore, and Spore: Heroes is just about to make it's way to the Wii. Maybe Nintendo demanded his head on a stake, to be barbecued atop a pile of burning money, before they would allow Spore to take its place in the Wii's library? Yeah, probably not.

Even more ironic is the fact that he's now going indie with a game called SpyParty; a game that looks like it's running on two TurboGrafx-16s scotch-taped together!

HA HA HA! YES! BEST JOKE EVER BLOGGED! YOU'RE WELCOME!

All hilarious comedy aside, the game sounds interesting, and I have to give Hecker credit for going indie in this economy. Still, I'd bet dollars to donuts that he's looking everywhere for jobs as SpyParty comes together. I just hope Chris doesn't plan on going to Nintendo for work. I've got a feeling that their inabiliy to "know sh*t about gaming as an art form" just may keep them from appreciating Chris's body of work.

Doesn't change the fact that the Wii has the hardware specs of something from almost a decade ago.

Also, the software looks about that old as well.

Has anyone ever tried duct taping two gamecubes together? I can't get it to work.

The only thing he was wrong about is that the wii isn't as powerful as two Gamecubes. 1.5 *maybe*.

Yeah, the processing power estimate is quite right but the part about caring about games as an art form is just stupid as something being art definitely doesn't depend on the sophistication of the technology used to create it.

sounds like another QQer that regrets not thinking up the wii before nintendo did, nintendo: 'umm lots of people dont know anything about gaming, maybe we should aim for them instead of getting pissed on for making a decent hardcore console that no one buys'

and spore is lol, ironic that a guy who worked on spore (you know, its creator made the biggest casual-fest game ever) is bagging on nintendo for doing something smart and casualised?

im tried of random retards blaming nintendo for introducing more people into an elitist industry, nintendo was smart (yes, in choosing their technology), get the **** over it nerds

Well Wii Music doesn't help your argument. Neither does coming up with really bland gameplay ideas and slapping Mii's on it. Sure Mario Galaxy is one of the better games this generation, but one game doesn't cut it anymore. Specially since their idea of "hardcore" is just give gamers the same shit they've been playing for the past 20 years.

I find the most ironic part of the entire story is the fact that it came out of GDC, a place where enthuisiasts press shouldn't have been in the first place.

The difference? Well, as a GAME DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE, the implied safety of EGMGTFO means developers can speak candidly and without backlash. Among the development community, you have people looking at 64MB texture memory and sighing in agreement. But then it hit the fantards fast and hard, "Harumph, harumph... how dare he. His head upon a spit, dir sirs at EA, his head upon a spit to appease us."

I mean evidence of enthusiasts press not belonging there is evident enough in the fact that Autodesk, Speedtree, Pixologic, and nVidia all held seminars there.

Also, no offense Holmes but Maxis guys got laid off about a week ago. Let's see what you put together in that time. I'm two months into my project and all we have is static models shooting particles at each other. Certainly some leeway could be allowed considering the quickness in which this game is shown.

"Harumph, Harumph, his head upon a spit."

So because they didn't make a powerful system it can't have art on it. Bullsh*t, Shadow of the Colossus came out on the ps2, Today I Die is a free game online, and trying to say that art in games can only be achieved if the system "can handle it" is bullsh*t. I hope nintendo hires him to play test WiiMusic 2 for years, then never release it.
Hcapt's Avatar - Comment posted on 08/29/2009 11:20

Honestly, I agree with him. The Wii probably has the processing power of two gamecubes, and Nintendo doesn't care about his definition of "art." The Nintendo definition of art is Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit. His definition of art is Spore. I'm pretty sure Nintendo's definition of art makes more money than his definition of art.

@Super Drybones

It's not just the hardware. Nintendo shovel out BS games with absolutely no artistic design (for the most part). Take Wii Fit. Such a simple fucking game, they could have easily made it more visually pleasing. What do they do? They make it with 3 colors and instructors with no expression (creepy as fuck) who are completely white and plain backgrounds. It makes working out boring as shit.

@ Shirley Temple - Nintendo made pretty much the best virtual gym ever created. Like it or not, that is an amazingly creative and unprecidented thing to do. Sure it is a different artistic direction than Hecker wanted to go, but it is a valid demonstration of creativity merging with extreme profitability.

Bullshit. There are a total of 5 "Wii" games and for the most part those are just medicore but not bad games whereas there are a load of other great games 1st party Nintendo has made for the wii. I understand that the "Wii" series is one of the worse to come from Nintendo but saying they mostly make bad games is utter crap.

I realise that your probably refering to the Wii sports knock-offs that appear but to be fair to the Nintendo 1st parties they've made too much great stuff for anyone to say that they "Shovel out BS games"

Good luck to the guy. Saying shit like that (whether I be so true it hurts) will burn a lot of bridges. Unless your an Indie Blogger that is...

Anyway why is his turning into a Wii debate? We all know graphics don't make a game but if anyone really thinks the Wii should be moving us backward to a state in time more like a Kid's toy than a piece of art to rival Movies and television then that's OK.

Yeah actually. It's the same basic formula with new areas and features and those games are pretty damn fun. Every developer is going to reuse its main series all that matters is if those games are fun.

Two gamecubes would indeed be more powerful than a single Wii.

And in Nintendo's defense, ANY system that makes as much bank as the Wii will see a FLOOD of shitty games with no artistic merit whatsoever.

There are hits and misses (game-wise) just like any other system out there. Unfortunately, due to the ridiculous popularity and supposed profitability of the system (and the fact that probably more than HALF of Wii users aren't the type of people who actually look around for game reviews before buying), the crap games FIERCELY outnumber the even decent ones.

The Wii may be a genius idea, and the right business move to practically save a floundering Nintendo at the point preceding its launch...

But I gotta tell you, I haven't bought a single game for the motherfucker since Mario Kart (but played quite a lot of them, and none of them inspired money to levitate and leave my wallet), and I think that Muramasa and TvC will be the only titles this year that I'll be giving two flying fuxx0rz about. Way more fun to be had on the big-boy consoles, in my opinion.

It's very close to that feeling I had when I was but a young lad, playing the full stand-up arcade machines (with a chair so I could reach the controls) and glancing with what I later knew to be contempt back at the other age-range children around me still fooling about in the dingy, germy ball pit. It's not elitism in the least, I find it to be more in line with having a more refined taste of the times.

Surely, there's nothing wrong with a fish and chips, but some folks prefer their sashimi. I am the latter of the two.

@ Everyday Legend- "It's not elitism in the least, I find it to be more in line with having a more refined taste of the times".

Got news for you bud, if you believe you have "more refined tastes" than someone, you are an elitist. That's pretty much the definition of elitism, actually. No big deal, we all do it sometimes, but don't pretend you're not looking down on people when you totally are.

Also, get an avatar.

Also also, get Little King's Story.

@ Sheppy- As you can see from the link provided above, SpyParty as been in the works for some time, far longer than a week. That said, I think the game looks fine, and could give a rats ass about how many polygons it's pushing.

Then again, I also think most TurboGrafx 16 games look pretty damn awesome, so what do I know?

@ Shirly Temple- Is that how you measure how "artistic" a game is? By how many colors it has? I had no idea...

I had no idea that the "two GC's taped together" comment originated from an industry guy. HA!

Good luck to him, though. no need to hate on the guy, commenters at large, for making a pretty handy approximation of the Wii's Horsepower.

Also, if you can tolerate pikmin gameplay (enh), I too would suggest Little King's Story. Hardcore, it is it.

Little King's Story, while entertaining, has among the least addictive gameplay elements of any game I've ever played. It's fun, tactical, and has a delightful presentation, but no matter how hard I try, I can't convince myself that I want to keep playing it over and over again like I can for Pokemon Puzzle League, Tetris Party, or even Super Mario Bros. 3.

It's actually rather disappointing, as while I would love to love the game as much as a Pikmin title, I can honestly say the gameplay for Pikmin is more engaging. Little King's Story is fun, but it simply does not have the addictive gameplay or "gotta keep going" mentality of space invaders, pong, or Pikmin.

Avatar is on the way. I need something sufficiently full of radbadical awesome, and these things take time, man. You can get it cheap, quick, or great - and only in combinations of two at the time.

Also, the "more refined tastes" was semi-self-depreciating humor, hence being written as if I should have a monocle, bowler hat, handlebar mustache, cup of tea, fobwatch and exclaiming "ZOUNDS!" at every turn. I apologize for not having a Grey Poupon commercial still handy to back it up when I'm posting from the 'Berry while @ the oppressive werkplace.

Do I think that there are good, nay, great titles on the Wii? Yes, absolutely.

No More Heroes comes to mind. LostWinds comes to mind. Jesus, I still kick on WarioWare: Smooth Moves from time to time. It's the only place you can find Cave Story. You can't get a legal downloadable copy of ActRaiser anywhere else, either. It has its moments, Muramasa and TvC being two of them that I'm anxiously awaiting. But to tell the unabashed truth, I don't get anywhere near the amount of playtime out of the Wii as I do the 360/PS3. It just seems (to me) that there are better playing, more well executed games on the higher-tier systems (to me) and in a much higher quantity.

Didn't mean to take a shit on your story, man. Just expressing myself as I felt like doing, and if Jim Sterling and SexualChocolate can do it, then damn it, so can I! >:oD

Also, much love to Jim. The man is fuckin' funny.

Personally, I feel the Wii is the best system out there. Wii Sports was boring and crude, but Wii Sports Resort is awesome. Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy are amazing, I enjoy Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, I love the virtual console, and the backwards compatibility lets me play super smash bros. melee.

Now, while that is a relatively meager selection to me, it's much better than the other consoles. Microsoft has Halo, but when I'm playing Bioshock I realize I'm not having fun after an hour and put it down. Fallout 3 is a dull brown wasteland, and Call of Duty 4 made me relearn console FPS's, something I refuse to do. Sony's PS3 could have been the best console, but when they took out the backwards compatibility they took out all the old Grand Theft Auto and Kingdom Heart games, not to mention I kind of wanted to play Final Fantasy VII (since all their consoles are disk based anyway.

In other words, this generation of consoles is marked by games that aren't fun, and because the Wii has the most games that don't make me ask myself whether or not I'm having fun, I consider it the best console this generation.

@ Hcapt- That's amazing to hear! I felt the exact opposite way about Little King's Story, as have many other people I know. I wonder what it was about the game that slowed you down? Maybe the need occasional management of funds, or inability to pluck your army from the ground and toss them through the air?

Interesting. I'd love to hear more about what you think.

I like games that you just can't seem to bring yourself to put down, and I found Little King's Story was the opposite. It might have simply been too slow gameplay wise; I tend to bore quickly.

He's right about the Wii's processing power, but wrong about everything else.
Anyway, I don't think the overwhelming presence of shovelware on the wii is directly nintendo's fault...just greedy developers seeing an opportunity to be greedy. If the PS3 was moving as many units as the Wii, you can bet your bottom dollar you'd see a higher percentage of crap games on it. Unscrupulous developers go where the money is.
