'Tremendous amount of interest' for Mass Effect film photo

BioWare's Mass Effect franchise already has a rich narrative history. With two games in the can (and another one on the way), three books, an iPhone game, and comics, there's plenty to talk about.

Of course, Hollywood has taken notice, according to Mass Effect 2 project director Casey Hudson. "Obviously we have a tremendous amount of interest from people in Hollywood to make a major motion picture," he recently told MTV Movies Blog.

This isn't the first word we've heard of a Mass Effect film. Back in 2008 it was reported that Avi Arad has obtained the rights to create a film adaptation. But not so fast -- Hudson says there are a lot of factors that have to be in place before they really move forward.

"The most important thing for us is we don't just want to see a movie get made," he explains. "We want to see a great movie get made, if it's going to get made at all."

If you simply can't wait, Mass Effect 2 ships for Xbox 360 and PC next week.

Higher a writer who has a good history of movies, same with the director. If they give it to a big director (peter jackson or someone) the movie will turn out great.

Oh yes, please make a movie of Mass Effect! That will simply validate the whole series!

They have no fucking shame, do they.

Who's writing the d-toid review, and when can we expect it? The other two reviews that I've read so far have been extremely positive. If the few small issues from ME1 really have been fixed, I'll be in heaven.

If a game succeeds on its own story-telling merits, it doesn't need a movie. RPGs of this nature tend to be fun to people for the choices they can make, a film adaptation isn't going to have that.

@Hel105
I'm about 6 hours through: so far, Bioware didn't necessarily "fix" the problems so much as dumb them down.

Example - everyone hated the super complicated endless inventory menu. So, they got rid of an inventory system, and now you "load out" your weapons like Resident Evil 5 at the beginning of a stage.

The game is still really good, but even 6 hours through, it lacks the "wow" factor from the first game in my opinion. I'll probably have it beaten tomorrow before I pigeon-hole it as inferior to the first game!

I know this is a stupid question but is anyone expecting Fox News to start whining again about the "love scenes"?

I wish they'd just leave out the love scenes entirely. The ones in the first game were just embarassing, and the ones in Dragon Age were so bad, they were funny.

Mass Effect 2 is having the opposite effect on me as it's having on Magnolan and I'm also about 6 hours through. I'm finding everything in this game more streamlined, polished, and varied then the first one. I love the new galaxy map, the combat feels so much better, and I also feel this game just has a more interesting story overall, so far, and is really keeping my interest held. I'm not going into any particular details but I'm thoroughly happy with this game so far.

Of all the video game movies ever made or that were brought up as possibly being made, Mass Effect is probably the one I'd see. Reason? Blue hooters.

I don't know when exactly that scene takes place, but it's definately from the first game. The engine room doesn't look like that in ME2.

@anyone asking
It still feels more or less like Mass Effect in combat and dialogue, but almost everything else is dramatically changed, and not necessarily for the better, I hated it at first but I'm starting to adapt. It does seem a little more 'casualized' than the first game, but the parts that actually matter are pretty much in tact.

@article
Do not want.

Part of the magic of Mass Effect is being deeply involved in everything. A movie wouldn't do this franchise justice.

Why do people keep thinking that video game movies are a good idea? Aren't they universally-reviled for a reason? Have we even had a good one yet?

@Doomsday:

Doom was pretty good. The story was something to be lacked, but it was still a good movie. The "FPS" part was the best part.

Maybe that's why I liked Cloverfield so much...

Dear Hollywood,

Please stay away from my beloved franchises. Half-Life, Condemned:Criminal Origins and Mass Effect(to name only 3). In return, I promise to watch Legion.

Sincerely, Ramm.

"The engine room doesn't look like that in ME2. "

OMG SPOILERS hahah just kidding.

That said, I guess that's a ME1 promotional scene, 'cause I know it never happens in-game. Unless it's during the montage before you head to Ilos, but I don't think it is.

yeah, i'm not sure that's the best idea...the whole element of choice and consequences and all the fancy things that make the game so wonderful are completely lost when you remove the player from the story.
it'd surely be a satisfying sci-fi but it couldn't capture what makes the game so fantastic.

Allow me geek out for a minute on Mass Effect. If they were going to make a movie, there is a specific story they could tell. There was a first contact war between the humans and the Turians. They talk a little bit about it in the prequel novels, but it feels very much like they left that hole open intentionally.

This would be a great movie because the proxy main character would be learning about all the various races and the citadel at the same time as the audience. It wasn't a very big war, as the Citadel was able to broker a treaty before things escalated.

It could stand alone on its own merits a story for those who will never read the books or play the games. It would fill a hole in the overall fiction of the universe. It would allow them to tell a story in that setting without stepping on the games' toes. The battles would allow for some pew pew pew and the politics of brokering a peace and the humans' introduction to the larger universe would be enough of a hook to tell an interesting story.

Think a riff on Star Trek VI. Maybe after the war in the first act, a human commando team assigned to the Citadel during treaty negotiaions uncovers a plot by a Batarian to assassinate a Turian dignitary and blame it on the humans, thereby extending the war and keeping humans out of areas the Batarians want to settle.

You could make a good Mass Effect movie as long as it's allowed to be it's own story in that universe and not just a pale imitation of the games.

I was thinking the Skyllian Blitz would make a good prequel, but your right the first contact war is way better. Hell it could even star Ahern, and General Williams in a cool 2 story lines style plot (one more political, one more frontline soldier).
