@!#?@!: The making of Q*bert photo

Q*bert is a weird videogame, and the story of its creation is even weirder. Well, maybe not weirder. But it's close, I swear!

For instance, did you know that it had one programmer, Warren Davis, and a single artist, Jeff Lee? Perhaps that wasn't unseen back in those days, but Q*bert was Davis' first game, believe it or not.

"As the game got noticed by others at Gottlieb, everyone seemed to have ideas and I saw myself as the filter through which all ideas passed," says Davis. "Since I was the only programmer, if I didn’t like an idea it didn’t go in the game. I really wanted to keep it simple."

One such proposed idea was giving Q*bert the ability to shoot out of his nose, which thankfully didn't make it through his filter due to the complexity of implementing such a thing. That, and the game was already plenty tough enough. I still suck at it to this day.

Also, I am reasonably certain that the image up there is going to give me nightmares for weeks to come. @!#?@! you, creepy Q*bert!

The funny thing about old school is, I've been playing video games as long as my 30 year old brain can recall back and they still consume my free time. My friend on the other hand is barely a "gamer" and for all intensive purposes, could care less.
He kicks my teeth in whenever we play Q*bert on the PS3. He has the high score and never fails to remind me.

Wow what an awesome read. Q*Bert was one of the first games i ever played, and at the time it was mind blowing. Tho i was young so I was not very good at it. It still brings a smile to my face.

I sucked at Q*Bert, but I blame the Atari joystick. Why were they so hard to push?! I was only 5!

Very nice. The birth of a videogame is always different.

One time I wrote some kind of Q*Bert poem/storybook for school when I was in first grade... I need to see if my mom still has it next time I visit.

I didn't figure out until years later that the name is like "Cube-rt", that totally blew my mind.

Im embarrased to say it, but as many times as I walked past the Q*bert arcade cabinets as a kid I never played this game, it looked too complicated (in comparison to things like joust and centipede). I never did and still to this day don't know how you're supposed to play it :(

man i loved going to my local chuckie cheese(Rochester NY) back in the day. it was huge! i was back when they had all the great arcade game of yester-year qberts, bubbles, popeye, donky kongs beer tapper and the awesome 3d pacman pinball/arcade games. the ball crawl. the chair you sit in and it goes around like a Ferris wheel, but it was only 1 seat. so weird

they also had that big stage show with the moving animatronic animals singing. they also had a cheese crawl room under the stage with holes you could look out and stuff. in a giant "ballroom" with like 20 lunch room sized tables.never seen another chuckie cheese like it. but then again this was back int he 80's when all that stuff was huge!
man i miss that.
