'Scavenge' multiplayer mode in Left 4 Dead 2 revealed photo

At a hands-on event in San Francisco tonight, Valve pulled the covers off of a new competitive multiplayer mode that will appear in Left 4 Dead 2 -- "Scavenge."

This new mode (designed to be shorter than the traditional competitive) has four survivors fighting to find 16 gas cans across the game map. Using the cans, the goal is to fill up a generator to win the match. Split up over six rounds (three per team), each starts with 120 seconds; each gas can will add an additional 20 seconds to the overall time. If time runs out, yet one survivor is still holding a gas can, the game will go into overtime until the generator is up and running or an infected knocks it from their hands.

On the opposing team will be the Infected, who are doing everything they can to feast on human flesh and (of course) stop the survivors from restarting the generator. Not only can infected knock the gas cans from the hands of the survivors, but special infected like the "The Spitter" can light the cans on fire with its phlegm. Survivors must also watch their fire -- one stray bullet can set the can on fire as well.

Valve are planning to ship Left 4 Dead 2 with six maps for "Scavenge" mode, each reconfigured maps from the game's campaign. "Motel" is one such area, and Hamza "The Shark" Aziz is going hands on with it as I type. Details, impressions, and more soon... if he survives.

Damnit, this is brilliant.

Anyone ever played Last Night on Earth? This reminds me of that. Good times.

Sounds like something from ZPS. Seems interesting to say the least

Oh man. I can see this being an amazing game-party mode. Left 4 Dead nights have just got real.

About time they revealed the new game mode. I'm not a big fan of competitive L4D, but this sounds fun and I think I could play it without getting bored or annoyed too quickly.

Every time news from this game goes public I only get more and more excited. Sounds great, and it's cool that it's shorter. That way, we can enjoy some competitive multi player without having to spend more than an hour playing (Which I don't mind, but a lot of others do). Can't wait to finally play this game.

Cool. I'm still hoping for a competitive zombie-killing mode, though.

And to all those fools who doubted Valve, with their dumb boycotts. A big middle finger to you all, in your faces.

Who's sorry now, and soon to U-turn and buy this awesome game?. All of you, I bet.

Neato. Looks like they're still going in the right direction to fix the flaws from L4D. Argh... too many choices of stuff to buy =<

I'm still just really excited about being able to control a Spitter. She's a classy dame.

Let's hope the plans Valve make for this game don't get pushed back into a Left for Dead 3.

But who will be there to shout OVERTIME over and over and over?

Also, I love this idea. Only one thing I'd comment on is the fact that it encourages you to split up, making things really, really difficult.
Although I guess that's a good thing.

One stray bullet can light the cans on fire? I can see this shit being really fucking chaotic with random players on Xbox Live.

Sounds awesome though.

I have to admit, this game mode does sound like a quick play session mode. While they tried to make survivor mode in the previous title this kind of mode, it would of worked, if it were not for the fact that some people will literally spend 30 minutes to set up the map + the people who are really good that can play the mode for an hour or more. This mode does sound pretty chaotic though. It will probably produce some amusing stories.

This game mode could have easily been done through DLC.

Just sayin'.

So what happens when the generator is filled and activated? Does the entire field get flooded with light, evaporating all of the zombies instantly like the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark?

Nice! I thought I read it was going to have a 'Gauntlet' mode getting from point A to B with a constant hoarde, this sounds like it could be more fun though seeing as I only play VS right now.

Wait, people are STILL complaining this should be DLC? Why not make Gears 2 DLC too? Its just got a few new scenes and modes; 4 gig DLC sounds great!
Yeah, this mode "could have been DLC," but it isn't, and Valve already gave us Survival mode and Crash Course dlc. Stop acting like you are entitled and buy the new game, assholes.

I just hope that if they have some kind of voice actor for saying "Overtime!" it will go "OVERTIME! OVERTIME! OVERTIME! OVERTIME! OVERTIME! OVERTIME! OVERTIME! ..." to parody the Announcer glitch in TF2 :)

When they fill the generator they can finally use it to power their corded electric boat?

Or maybe they could put gas into, I dunno, A TRUCK, so they could run over the zombies and get away. Of course, then you'd have to argue why they need to get so many cans... while being attacked by a horde of the undead.
