'Martyrdom' perk may be different in Modern Warfare 2 photo

The “Martyrdom” perk was something of a sore spot for at least a few Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare players. Allowing for a live grenade to be dropped upon being killed, the perk annihilates any aggressor near the perk-holder’s corpse. It sounds cheesy, and it is for the most part.

Aware of the reception of the perk, it appears as if it may have been tweaked or refined in Infinity Ward’s follow-up to the shooter, Modern Warfare 2. Chatting it up with VideoGamer, lead character artist for the title Joel Emslie said, "We are very, very aware of the community and what they like and don't like, and Martyrdom has caught our attention.” He added, “I'm happy with how the game is.”

"It's [Martyrdom] treated differently. And I will say this -- it fits in perfectly."

Sounds like something is afoot, for sure. But as Emslie noted when first approached, the perk wasn’t in the beta, therefore he couldn’t discuss it beyond that bit of information. We’re left wondering with twitchy fingers.

If you’d like to learn more about what has changed or remained the same check out our recent preview.

hallelujah!!! my guess is it will be a death streak thing or kill streak thing. god i hated being on an epic kill streak only to be blown up by a live grenade dropped by one of my victims.

I never understood what all the fuss was about, a perk as any other.

They probably enable you to throw it at someone, in the same way that you can throw back other grenades.

Can't think of anything else they could come up with.

In before "IT'S STILL IN THE GAME?! NO-BUY!"

Maybe they went full-on and made it a C4 Pack strapped to you and you get a "short sprint" where you can get into a big group and detonate? No? It's not PC, but it would e funny. I ever cared for or about Martyrdom, I quickly learned NOT TO SIT AT THE CORPSE OF SOMEONE I KILLED! Surely this mostly only bothered t-baggers. I'm sure if martyrdom was in Halo they would decry that and it would be patched out of the game as well.

*shakes fist*

Sorry to be picky but you spelt Martyrdom wrong in the header.
But this is good news, Martyrdom is cheap how it is now, and I even feel bad when I use it.

The only time it really pissed me off was when a teammate would have it equipped, get sniped, and blow up half the damn team in S&D.

The fixes for it that have been constantly suggested since CoD4's release have been to have it either only work some of the time, or only work if the person still has a grenade in their inventory. Considering how much both fixes have been suggested and how much sense either/both makes, I would think(hope) that one of these is the case.

Fix juggernaut and the game is perfect.

Rosseh is 100% right: just be cautious, memorize who has the perk every game, and you're safe from martyrdom: it's not hard.

I think it should really only work if the grenade is their active weapon.

The only people who really whine about this perk are people who teabag and people who are stupid enough to stay near where they killed someone. I only used it if I was coming up against these kind of people, and it is pretty damn funny.

The only thing I hate about Martyrdom is when a teammate kills an opponent with it on, then I happen upon the body a second or two later, and it's too late to do anything about it. Other than that, it's easy enough to avoid, and who really stays around the spot where they killed someone anyway?

Well, if you've played the game long enough you'll know what grenades sound like when they drop near you. This is no different.

The way it shouldve been is, if you have a grenade when
you die, then it drops. Martydom shouldn't drop what you don't have (at times)

Martyrdom on the enemy never bothered me. On team mates though.. Jay-sus. The amount of times I'm systematically clearing a passage for us to work through and some guy goes zipping by like he's Rambo only to get shot dead half a foot in front of me.. well, sometimes you manage to get clear, sometimes you don't.

Play with friends. It's the best way.

I don't get the whining. Yes, it sucked dying from martyrdom. About the only thing that would need to be tweaked would be having a grenade left in your inventory. Aside from that, I had no problem with the perk. I have a bigger issue with the n00b tube grenade launcher than martyrdom.

Martyrdom was awesome. What can you say? People who like to complain will complain no matter what. I rarely got killed with Martyrdom grenades, and my grenades rarely killed anyone else, either, so I don't see the big deal.

And occasionally, Martyrdom led to awesome moments. Like when you run towards a few guys camped out near each other, imagining your soldier screaming like a crazy terrorist madman, and they shoot you down, only to have your dropped grenade take them all out.

Martyrdom was one of the most poorly executed ideas in the history of the FPS.
In order for martyrdom to make ANY sense, two things are absolutely required.
1: A grenade must be in your inventory. In CoD4, you could toss three grenades but still have one magically appear when you died if you chose martyrdom.
2: A button must be pressed in order to arm it within a very short amount of time, say .5 - 1 second. So in CoD4 after the grenade magically appeared, it also magically armed itself.

No, martyrdom was not 'awesome', it was cheap and did not make any sense. Why wasn't I even allowed to toss the grenade away like I could if someone threw one at me?

I never used martyrdom, and I never will. Not even for an achievement. I don't need a perk to tell me I suck at the game, I already know I do.

You can definitely throw martyrdom grenades. One of the most satisfying experiences is killing a guy who has martyrdom and chucking his martyrdom grenade at his teammates and getting more kills. So good.

meh. there was nothing wrong with martyrdom. it wasn't unfair cause anyone could use it. if you played COD4 and got used to avoiding corpses within the first five minutes like everyone else it was rarely a problem.

people pretty much always complain about grenades for one reason or another. overpowered, too many etc. yes, it's annoying to get killed by a martyrdom, but it's supposed to be! now we're going to end up with less grenades, and probably have to save one for martyrdom which will probably end up being a gimp too far.

Martyrdom was really only a pain in games with Friendly Fire enabled. Otherwise, unless you royally sucked, you could get away from a Martyrdom grenade very, very easily.

Meh. So-called "pros" complaining about martyrdom only have themselves to blame. If they'd just back off from the corpse or go around it they'd be fine. If you keep tripping on your own shoelaces, don't demand a ban on shoelaces.

Sure it can be avoided, but COD4 being so fast paced lead to many situations where it couldn't. The problem with martyrdom is that it rewards failure.

Escaping from an enemy, after taking damage, sprinting, and then another one pops up in front of you, you kill him, he drops the grenade, you don't have enough health and you don't have enough breath to sprint...

I say treat it like Last Stand. Don't allow the grenade to drop if the player is already dead or doesn't have a grenade in inventory, but give the player the chance to pull the pin. Or better yet, instead of a grenade, have it be c-4 strapped to the chest that can be detonated strategically at a button push.

I always said you shouldn't be able to perform the perk when you have already used your grenade. What the heck would you keep an extra nade? You'd throw it consciously if you could, for sure, therefore, there shouldn't be an extra grenade, no martyrdom for you if you used your nade, or if you get a headshot (so I partially agree with etirflita)

There is always going to be something in a game some people hate and some people like. Martyrdom is one of those things. It never bothered me that people used it. Stay away from the people you shoot. Sure you can't get away every time but it's much the same as people trowing grenades everywhere without looking.

The feeling is great though if you kill somebody with Martyrdom. It always make me laugh. But I have to say it's just a matter of getting used to. Almost everybody used Martyrdom for a while. So I just got so used to it. Until some dudes switched to Last Stand again. It's some sort of cycle.

Much of the suggestions here in the comments make sense. I'd love to see some in the final game.

Although there isn't something like a martyrdom perk in Uncharted 2. I must say that a similar thing happens. Just before you die you can trow out a grenade usually killing somebody. It's takes some skill and it's more of a choice. Do I keep shooting and maybe kill that guy or shall I drop a grenade and give up? I'd love to see something like that in MW2.

I always like it when people complain about Martyrdom and how it doesn't use a grenade from your inventory, which instantly means you're magically creating a grenade instead of the very obvious answer (and the only likely one) which is that the guy keeps a grenade on a short fuse separate from the rest of his inventory. Oh no, the perk makes perfect sense and only retards die from it! Run!

ok, if your hit by Martyrdom much, you suck at CoD4 and at life and should probably just die. People complain because they suck. (No, I don't use Martyrdom, its pretty useless because most people are to smart to be hit by it.)
