Back in the early days of Left 4 Dead, there was this sudden influx of announcements for ambitious custom campaigns. How many of these creations panned out? Either I'm looking in all the wrong places, or many of them are either abandoned or stuck in development hell; such is the way of modding.
"I Hate Mountains," though -- it's the real deal, and it only just came out yesterday. I'll let the trailer above do most of the heavy lifting here, but yeah, this is a five-part campaign complete with alternate routes and the sort of attention to detail you would expect from a group of highly passionate fans.
In all honesty, it feels like the beginning to one of those "guys who make popular mod get hired by big-name company" situations. At least, I sure hope so. "I Hate Mountains" is currently only working with Left 4 Dead, although support for the sequel is being tinkered with.
Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied: "bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

As much as I'd love some fake watches, I have a legit question. That canada eh? line, did they record new dialog for that or is that just jumbled clips? Voice acting?
If this campaign was made the same way as Portal Prelude, that'll mean shiny but juvenile level design, speech synthesizer voice acting, a very small playtesting group, and lots of excuses. Look at how they etch their names in big block letters on the map - ask yourself whether any of the actually good mappers like Adam Foster and the guy who made Offblast for TF2 did that. They even had a good, subtle, fairly un-intrusive method for self-insertion: the wall graffiti. But noooooo, it has to be BIG BLOCK LETTERS IN BRIGHT COLOURS SO EVERYONE KNOWS WHO THE SUPER AWESOME MAPPERS ARE AND WHAT THE TITLE OF THE MAP IS
@Nose Dig Digger For your sake, I hope you aren't this much of an angry bastard all the time. It's not healthy. Before you trash someone's hard work, why don't you actually play it?
Nose Dig Digger, are you really saying 'fuck credit sequences'? If you think putting one's name on one's work is bad then you have millenia of artists to beef with, not just the makers of this mod.
@Blevins- I know they're not actually exclusive, it's just the support from Valve and the community isn't there, which makes it difficult for me to even think of getting their games on any platform but PC. Just a bit of humour there.
lol garethxxgod, as if that would ever happen. if you want to play mods, you have to play the PC version.
And although I though Portal Prelude was some shit, this map looks professionally done, and I've been looking for a reason to touch the L4D franchise again without ever touching L4D2 again.
Although I doubt I'll get much play out of this unless it gets successfully tweaked for L4D2, it looks hella good. That finale looks like it's full of tons of possibilities compared to some of the Valve finales.
I'll be blunt, the L4D1 community was crippled when L4D2 came out and it never recovered. Why should I go back to vanilla L4D1 when I can wait for the chocolate L4D2 version with chainsaw action on top?
I just played through a normal campaign of it with a friend. Loved it. But yeah, I agree with StingingVelvet 100%, though I love spitters and chargers. Jockeys should die and stay dead.
ooooo, i'll be downloading this ASAP... but honestly, after nearly eight months of sexy L4D2 action, the original does look a little drab in comparison.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I'll fire up L4D for this :D
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?
Of course this campaign is awesome. Portal Prelude is arguably the best mod ever made for Portal. Oh man, I am downloading this ASAP.
Will do another to discover what the alternate paths give me.
Really well designed.
I still mourn the apparent cancellation of the Shaun of the Dead campaign. I would have bought the PC version for that
You might get a valve mod map pack, only problem is it'll cost $$$ because that is microsoft for you.
Downloading this NAO.
I was gunna say more, but that stuck out to me. Out of all the maps, you had to pick Offblast....
And although I though Portal Prelude was some shit, this map looks professionally done, and I've been looking for a reason to touch the L4D franchise again without ever touching L4D2 again.
I actually find the original the better game... better mood and atmosphere, no annoying spitters, better survivors. I just wish it had 2's gore.
I cannot wait for L4D to come out on Steam for the mac. That's a guaranteed first day purchase for me.
And then I will download this.
