'Gun-like' Avatar items to be banned from Xbox Live soon photo

Epic Games has declared that the Hammerburst and Lancer Avatar props are going to be removed on January 1, 2012, as part of a new anti-gun policy. Microsoft will be barring any Avatar proper that resembles a firearm. Gotta protect those kids while they're playing Halo and Gears!

If you bought these items already, you will be able to keep them, but there will be no more "gun-like" items on sale in the Avatar Marketplace.

Microsoft has a strange list of things that Avatars cannot have or do, pretending there's some iconic image to uphold like Mickey Mouse. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not realize that Avatars aren't childhood heroes on par with Disney characters. They're pointless little monstrosities, and having guns was about the only interesting thing going for them.

So some avatars who bought guns already can have them, but some can't? Just ban them all, people who actually paid money for a stupid virtual gun deserve to be ripped off.

But why? Only people who knows games with guns would buy the guns.
A 5 years old wouldnt buy a Gears gun, as he hasnt played Gears (in theory),as its a game for 17+.

Microsoft your biggest sellers contain guns. If your avatar can't have them just make it a parental control, where gun avatar props are not shown.

Though considering most kids play the games with guns anyway this is idiotic all around.

Yeah, because people who buy real guns are so much cleverer than people who buy "stupid virtual guns". Also, you do realise that this entire website is dedicated to virtual content, which begs the question of why you have an account on it.

wow did you really miss my point by that much?

Buying games is fine because there was actual effort put into them and nobody buys video games just to look at guns.

Spending real life money so that a virtual person can hold a virtual gun for a few seconds is not only foolish, but it proves you don't value your money.

Cool. I'll pop out my Gold Lancer from time to time thumb my nose at Microsoft for even selling these in the first place.

This is so weird. I mean sure we could talk about buying avatar props in the first place but I mean there's a reason it's called a prop. I'm not sure what negative image Microsoft thinks they're getting from these considering shooting guns is the very nature of a good majority of videogames these days.

Meh, do what you gotta do I guess.

Seriously? Am I not clear when making comments or are you people exceptionally well at missing the point?

First of all, I'm not making some kind of political pro gun message if that's what you think I'm trying to do. Second of all not all virtual content is the same. There is ZERO value to buying some stupid little item for your avatar. It serves no value whatsoever and you are seriously stupid with your money if you buy it and are now defending it by equating it to video games in general.

You'd think they'd have the decency to give them away for free, or at least discount them, before they go. This extends to games with impending delists too.

Since this current administration is responsible for shipping thousands of guns to Mexican drug cartels, to be used in crimes as an excuse to attack our 2nd amendment, maybe we should respond by taking the Presidents secret service guns away.

Nah. Let's worry about polygons instead.

Well that's fucking stupid.

@llort het

"There is ZERO value to buying some stupid little item for your avatar. It serves no value whatsoever and you are seriously stupid with your money if you buy it and are now defending it by equating it to video games in general."

What about people who pay for DLC that adds extra costumes, weapon skins, etc? Are those people gaining nothing of value either? And if not, what DOES constitute value in your mind? Because I'm sure some people might disagree.

Paying to dress up one's avatar is just as valid an expenditure as paying for anything else in the realm of videogames. It's all "fake", yet it all serves to contribute to an entertainment value that some people obviously enjoy... so what's the harm?
