'Gay' used pejoratively 98 percent of the time on LIVE photo

I don't think this will come as a surprise to anyone who has stepped into a multiplayer game of Halo or Gears of War recently, but the word gay is thrown around a lot and it isn't used as a compliment or a neutral adjective to describe someone's sexual orientation. No, it's used as an insult, and according to Stephen Toulouse, Xbox LIVE's head of policy and enforcement, it is used as an insult 98 percent of the time whether that be verbally or in someone's Gamertag.

Of course the issue of referring to one's sexuality in a Gamertag has come up a few times before, and as of right now it is against the rules to do so. "The overall policy we have today is that the expression of sexual orientation in a Gamertag or text field is not allowed," he told Kotaku yesterday before hosting a panel on the issue at EA. "That doesn't matter what the orientation is." Oh, really? That is funny because I had my text fields literally saying I was straight for about five months and heard nary a word for Microsoft. I guess they didn't get too many complaints on that one.

Still, Microsoft sees the issue with banning someone because of their sexual orientation and is hoping to change it by working with GLAAD and other groups to figure out a way that people can represent who they are without also allowing hate speech to overflow LIVE. "We recognize that the policy is not just that some communities feel like they are being targeted," he said. "Our challenge is how to (change the policy). We are working on that now."

It's good to hear that Microsoft is working on this as I don't believe the argument that people shouldn't express who they are just because it has to do with sexuality. The real issue however is the 98 percent of the time when the word gay (or worse) is thrown around as an insult or a negative term. I'm not proud to say that I use to do it too in order to describe things I didn't like and I know a plethora of Dtoiders who also do it -- Dtoiders who I would never label as homophobic. I'll just pose the question my freshman year roommate posed to me that got me to stop using gay as a negative adjective: "Why are you using gay as a synonym for bad? Do you think gay people are bad, evil or wrong?"

That's what happens when you get a billion kids together on a network, give them headsets and a competitive game system. Especially when that system is affordable to all of the badly brought up, scumbag, welfare kids.

"Seperate the kids and adults" - This has been done, kids play on Live, Adults play on PSN - you rarely hear a "NIGGER" or "GAY" on PSN, I do however have a Socom clan member who likes to play 70s and 80's tunes over his headset when he's dead, just to pass the time until respawn.

Expensive - bought by adults, the odd rich parent kids - talk tactics, music, general grown up chatter.

Cheap - bought buy scumbags, kids and the odd misinformed respectable adult - chat about "GHEY" "FUCKING NIGGER BASTARD CUNT" "FUCKING WANKER" "GHEY GHEY GHEY GHEY"

Was the main point for turning me off buying a 360, that and just how shit Halo was, I played both online and thought "PS3 For sure!"

Xbox Live costs 50 bux a year though, multiply a couple of years and it's the rich folks that buys 360's and poor folks than buys PS3's. Unless you don't like playing online.

The install base on the Xbox is large enough that it can basically cater to everyones gaming needs.

If you're tired of hearing 'bad' words being thrown around with wreckless abandon, then do something about it.

Find a gaming group that caters to you. Game with people that you like and people that like you.

Don't just jump into a random game, and if you do, be prepared to deal with a certain amount of hostility/ignorance. Even then, you can still mute them, report them, tune them out, turn 'em off, whatever.. you have all the options.

The greatest part of living in this free society is the ability to have and hold opinions of our own and be despised for them.

Plus, not starving or being caught in the middle of a military coup is pretty nice too.

Classic Sexualchocolate. It's not just Live that has twats. PSN got plenty too. Don't try and turn this into a console war. Anyway, not one of your posts would indicate that you, a PS3 user, are anymore mature than the 13 year old pretend homophobes in online gaming.

I don't seem to hear so much homophobia online, but when I do I'm kind of oblivious to it. It's easy to say shit online, you feel safe, and the anonymity protects your ignorance. But shit, practically all kids are ignorant, don't matter what they're doing. One of the kid trends in England is to be xenophobic and homophobic, but I seriously doubt most of those will carry that view when they grow up. And if they do, well it they who should be pitied. Like all insults, discretion is advised.

surely this 98% is 98% america, which is about 15 years behind the rest of the civilised world in these matters....

True true... It's one of the only developed countries that fears gay people.

As usual, Solozaur and Chronic Logic are complete failures as individuals.

MechaMonkey, SonicTHP and Box Lobster are 100% correct.
