"Of course there are ways of joking and types of jokes that work to achieve the opposite, but I see few of these types of jokes being used here."
If there are jokes that achieve the opposite, then it's not a logical fallacy now, is it?
It's not just the jokes, it's the way that the word is used, and the frequency that it is used in gamer culture that is disturbing. I highly doubt that gamers are using the word to "take the fear" of rape out for everyone, because of their humanitarian principles.
^This.
If she's going to present herself as an on-air "expert", then it's actually good that she is being held accountable for her expertise. Spouting personal opinion that has no basis in research or fact should be called for what it is... a steaming pile of shit. Her integrity has been questions... and found to be flawed. If she can back up her preposterous claim it will be interesting, but I don't think that there is any way she can back it up as both research and statistics seem to be against her.

Implying that rapists are more likely to rape all because society has somehow become desensitized to the word "rape" just boggles my mind.
In this instance it is. I'm not arguing with your POV, only on it with regards to this story. None of the jokes made glorified rape.

Once again, to an extent, I agree. But to attribute that solely to gamers is to have a blinkered view of the world (or more specifically the internet) at large.
I also feel as though you're either twisting my words or misunderstanding my viewpoint; I never explicitly stated that gamers were actively trying to take the fear out of the term. I stated that jokes can achieve that effect yes, but didn't explicitly circle anyone group trying to achieve that.
I merely stated that, in this case, the jokes aren't glorifying on encouraging rape.
I'm not saying your stance is invalid or a logical fallacy in and of itself - merely that in the case of this article it doesn't really stand.
So you are proving the point that we are all making. It's not the games that cause rape, you would have us believe that it's kids on xbox live who promote rape every time they get a kill in Halo. Because that's -totally- true! I can't walk down the neighborhood street without having some mangy looking child wielding an xbox controller trying to have his way with my fudge factory.
How sad, considering these negative 'reviews' will just be deleted, anyway. They couldn't even get it down to a 1 star rating, that's pretty pathetic.

I agree to a certain extent, but in the long run, if it keeps filth like hers from selling to the mainstream, I think that's just as positive an outcome.
That or they could just point out how flimsy her premise is. Those who are young and impressionable enough to be influenced to perform rapes or less likely to resist the urges being presumed to reside in all males everywhere by reading (pshh. Reading in a FPS. That's a violation in and of itself,is it not?)sexually suggestive words connected to violent acts, neither of which a person who can't separate reality from fantasy might understand the implications of,they most likely aren't contributing to this unsubstantiated spike in rape rates right now. If she predicted a rise in rape rates as a result of BulletStorm and its ilk in about 5-10 years and fed it to Silvia Brown or some other so-called psychic of any stripe, then it would be up to the stellar standards of journalistic integrity of the Onion or better yet,the National Inquirer.
If they are big enough boys to do the dastardly deed, it is highly unlikely that shooting a man who may or may not be of extra-terrestrial origin through the rectum (or rectum analogue) in a videogame while reading a heads-up display message about rear-entry is going to shift his attention to violating the person of human females.
Now, if she claimed that BulletStorm caused an increase in prison rape as well as the likelihood to go to prison in the first place, she still wouldn't have a case but her non-case would have a much stronger element of versimilitude to it...like a gritty, realistic videogame as opposed to her BulletStorm-level absurdist claim.
Making false claims that videogames make people want to rape is far worse than rating a book poorley.
"To put it bluntly, this book worries me.
The concepts it puts forth and the behavior it condones will almost certainly have a negative impact on the lives of those that choose to read it and take it seriously.
It seems to be based largely on opinion and random conjecture, and offers nothing in the realm of good advice or insight. Instead it chooses to offer a deceptive and manipulative route for solving problems, especially problems involving romance.
Lieberman's message in this book seems to be "Why put all the work into a relationship that might only have some of the rewards you seek, when you can manipulate others to get what you want?", although she veils this with her thin "logic" and poor justifications.
I can only conclude that the author did not consider the consequences that her "insight" would have when she chose to write this garbage. It's uninformed, poorly written and potentially dangerous to any young or impressionable readers that might happen upon it.
Books like this degrade the integrity of the publishing industry and of the values people hold in our society.

I think reviews like that could very well harm the book.
-People thinking Rape occurances are on a rise despite being on a 30+ year decrease.
-Having my review quoted in a Jim Sterling Article and seeing the reactions

I'm a simple man...
The drivel leaking out of the asshole you call a mouth makes as much sense as that Liberman cunt. Rape, while being an atrocity, is a FUCKING WORD. It holds no more power then your limp-dick excuse to make yourself feel morally superior. That, and in the video gaming community, it's a word commonly assocIated outright beating the shit out of the opposing force.
The meanings and context of words change. Get over yourself.
A valid critique but sadly it would be a complete and total waste of my time to invest any time whatsoever in listening to pop psychiatry without any valid basis of scientific study or anything beyond "This is what I think." We've made celebrities of Dr. Phil and Oprah for simply stating what they think, saying it's proven, and stating "that's good enough for me."
If I was to waste my time with a book, I find the ACTUAL studies much more interesting. I like the impact of society and culture upon the individual rather than sound clips and positive reviews from fellow TV Psychiatrists. So as much as I wish I could offer debate after debate flunking out her points, the first 10 pages was enough for me to write it off as horseshit and read "Why things are" instead.
Amen. The oldest incarnation of the word meant to "seize or carry off by force". It's connotation to sexual assault didn't come until MUCH later. One of its current definitions is, "an act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse; despoliation; violation".
Rape victims don't own the word. Women don't own the word. The word is owned by no one, and AGAIN, if you can be made to feel as if the act of sexual assault is no big deal because someone said they "raped some guy at Killzone 3", then something is already wrong with you.
You whiny fuckstains are ridiculous. No one with sense or brains agrees with you. Please shut the fuck up.
"Videogames cause assholery" STATUS: CONFIRMED
But then anyone who's ever played Free Mode in Red Dead Redemption already had more than adequate proof of that.
If they're deleting the obviously fake ones, they should get rid of the 5 star reviews as well :)
