Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is an interesting game with a terrible name. It’s an open-world simulation-style shooter (think Far Cry 2) set on an island named Skira. The fictional paradise war zone is massive. We're hearing that it could take players up to 20 minutes to navigate from one end to another with the help of a helicopter. And you thought hoofing it in Far Cry 2 or Grand Theft Auto was rough.
Below the fold you can check out a new trailer for the game. It shows a bit of stealth, communication between squad members, and a haunted farmhouse.
We’re getting an original Ghost Recon vibe from this game -- definitely not a bad thing. If you’re a fan of simulation shooters, you may want to keep Dragon Rising on your radar. It’s due out for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime this Fall.
These aren't even the guys that made the original. The original makers went on to make Arma and the recently released ARMA 2, which are really OFP 2 and 3 (or rather, 1.5 and 2, as the developers say, since the original ARMA was kind of just thrown out there for multiplayer)
This game might be fantastic, but it's worth mentioning that the little guys that made the first that this is based off of just released the REAL sequel, while this is just the big guys who shafted them leeching off their work. You guys should get some ARMA 2 stuff up.
Will I still be able to jump out of a helicopter, break both my legs, and then subsequently drown in a puddle due to being unable to stand up? Man, the first Flashpoint was hilarious.
Unfortunatly even if the games good I normally become really tired of this kind of game when I need to good from one end to another in this kind of game.. having a mission and beeing kill by some kind of other dumb on the road FRAKS ME out, Thats what got me out of FC2. Anyway I will surely try it hope it won'T be like this
When I heard about this game last year it looked mint, I've never played the first one. I still really want this but this trailer isn't the dog's bollocks.
@and0, Arma II looks really good as well I've always thought.
@Jp4Readl, I guess you're Japanese or just aren't good at English in general.
In these games, the only words in my head are "I can't see shit", "where the fuck are they", "who's firing at us" and "who are my team mates firing AT!?". And the night missions, ooooh boy.
My only hope for this game is that there are time limits on missions to drive the action on. Given the 'one shot/one kill' nature of things, it will be all about stealth and accuracy which means a LOT of camping.
I foresee every large online game being a campfest for about the first 15 minutes, at which point everyone gets bored and moves up all at once and it becomes a bullet-haze. So long as there's ample cover and good map flow that shouldn't be too much of a problem, but time limits would also help.
Still keeping an eye on this game, as I have been for a while. I may buy it. If it's anything like FC2, though... fuck that. I hated that game. I'll probably decide not to pre-order it and wait for a decent site to put out a decent review, then decide what to do.
This game will be more like ArmA than anything else, its based on the same mechanic's of the original OFP which was made by the developers who made ArmA(2). MASSIVE open worlds, larger than far cry 2 I can promise you that, and more open as well. Vehicle simulation & combat simulation far more realistic than Far Cry 2.
It will basically be like OFP1/ARMA but with a simplified control & command system so it can be easily played on consoles. The mission editor, massive world, and simulated combat will still be a major part of the game tho.
I'm more tied into ArmA for its realism, but OFP2 has my interests slightly because of its new control scheme.
I'm actually getting a bit tired of open world games. Sometimes they're just too open. I may still get this game if the online play is solid... I tend to actually buy games more for their online play than for the offline play. With a really good online game I can get 100's of hours of gameplay... so even if the offline game sucks, it can still be a good investment.
@Elsa - this game is worth nothing but the online experience, if its anything like the original OFP & ArmA, the online is where its at. But keep in mind this is going to be focused around being a realistic war simulation.
But here this! What makes the online so great? I'll tell you what.. one word.. cooperative. Making missions in OFP/ArmA is possibly the most addicting and simplest thing you could do in this series. Spend 2 hours or so making a mission for 6 of your friends, and then going in and spending a good hour or two running through the mission, maybe even dieing several times having to restart the mission and just trying to succeed over all.. the replay value is astonishing.
In the original OFP, several of my friends would download custom afgahn maps, and several desert based special forces units along with taliban styled combat units, and I would spend hours a day making missions for us. And one map = the size of an entire country or world, so you can make hundreds of different missions all over the map in different locations, of different flavors. For example, one mission I made in this afghan map, we had to move through this canyon area and watch out for snipers, which i did not tell my friends about, and after we made it through the canyon we had to assault this town with just 8 of us and destroy a weapons cache & some Russian helicopter.... this whole mission was played over 10 times, and took about 2 or 3 hours to finish every time. Its a different experience every time, if they use the same AI structure as OFP, then expect the AI to flank your ass a lot, always cover your six ;).
If this is your type of game, if you love to make your own experience and have that experience with your friends.. if you ever had a dream of an awesome military operation.. you CAN make it in OFP2, and you WILL be able to play through it with anyone you want. This is the greatness of the OFP/ArmA universe, and there's nothing else like it.
