(Almost) All Mass Effect 2 units to develop ME2 DLC photo

In a recent conversation with GTTV (via TVGB), Mass Effect 2 project director Casey Hudson revealed that most of the ME2 team would switch to working on ME2 downloadable content after the completion of the core game. And don’t expect just huge expansion packs -- the game will support a range of different content unlike the first ME.

“As part of trying to build the game, as ambitious as it was, one of the things we weren’t able to do technically was to have the support in the game itself for certain kinds of downloadable content,” Hudson said, speaking to the first Mass Effect and its hang-ups.

“So, it had to be a huge pack or nothing essentially was the issue. Now we’ve gone through and made sure that its technically possible to do a whole range of different kinds of downloads,” said Hudson.

Hudson continued, saying that "pretty much the whole team" will begin working on DLC once the game is ready to ship, and that content could be influenced by fans: “Once we’re done working on Mass Effect 2, pretty much the whole team switches into working on really cool downloadable content. That’s where we like to listen to what fan feedback is for ‘where do you want to go’ and ‘what kinds of things do you want to see.’ “

DLC details remains unannounced, but if a recent retailer survey has the right of it, we can expect “planned episodic combat via DLC,” weapon and armor packs, new downloadable characters for the “campaign experience,” new downloadable worlds, as well as “full campaign expansions for download.” And all of that is in addition to some sort in-game "periodic update" network dubbed Cereberus Network.

It looks like Bioware will be doing some extensive ME2 DLC -- the planned amount of staff Hudson mentioned certainly reflects that. But it also speaks to lessons the studio learned while creating the original's DLC.

Bioware had small teams creating the content in the first game. Expansion pack “Bring Down the Sky” is an excellent example of this: a six-man, full-time team saw the DLC to completion after the game went gold. This was revealed to us in July by ME designer Christina Norman, who also said that the expansion was something of a learning experience.

“ ‘Bring Down the Sky’ was more than just a piece of DLC: it was us learning how to do DLC for Mass Effect and learning what we could do with a small team,” Norman told Destructoid. “Mass Effect was, of course, a huge-budget project with a huge team, but we were hoping we could produce DLC with a small team.”

“What we found was that the content we could produce with a small team in a short time just wasn't up to the standards we wanted to produce for DLC,” she continued in response to our question. “We were able to produce more uncharted-world level content in a reasonable time, and that's what we originally envisioned ‘Bring Down The Sky’ as being, but in an early project review we just didn’t feel that it was measuring up to what we wanted from DLC.”

At the end of the day, “Bring Down the Sky” was an OK bit of content. The Batarians were an interesting addition, and saving a planet is always thrill. But it looks like we can expect more out of ME2 -- at least, that’s our hope.

This is rather deterring from the game itself. The entire "dont like it, dont buy it" mentality still offends me because the last few years people have been saying that yet they buy mediocre DLC which leads to stuff like this.

This is good news, depending on the quality of the DLC, and how much it costs, of course. Lots of stuff the scale of 'Bring Down the Sky' would be great, especially if they are able to bring the trademark Bioware touch to the DLC. Hell, even some new weapon and armour types might sell (if they are cheap, that is).

More Mass Effect 2 goodness after the game has been released is great.

Cue in the bitching about how it "should be in the game" or "Bioware wants me to sell my baby so that I can afford their terrible evil DLC"

That said, the game better have substantial content or this will not end well and to be honest, they would deserve it.

That'd be my cue. I'm not opposed to DLC and I think the story and character downloads are a great idea. It's the weapons and armour that I take issue with. I'm having trouble justifying not including such basic assets and going on to charge for them.

That said, if I can buy a Spaceman Spiff, I will never say a word against them again.

I'm really not a fan of RPG DLC...paying $5 for an hour or two of gameplay just isn't for me. Maybe this will be the game that changes my mind. Make it happen, Bioware!

If it's like how they handled DLC in Dragon Age, I'm afraid I won't be able to resist that in ME2... Just no more arena fights please!

As long as the DLC is quality and the main game isn't lacking I am all for it, but wow... have we really reached a point where before the game is even out we have to hype the DLC? Like, I already need MORE when I haven't gotten the first serving yet?

It's a truly GIMMIE culture, for sure.

Methinks MAYBE (just maybe) Bioware may be biting off more than it can chew...They've already promised MASSIVE Dragon Age DLC and now ME2?

With Old Republic in the pipeline, do they even HAVE the resources to devote?

Not that I'm complaining...hell, I bought the Collector's Edition of Dragon Age (hmmmmmmm wooden box) and will buy the CE of ME2 (if it's available here in Singapore) so MORE DLC for two of my favourite games is ALWAYS good thing.

It's just that Bioware (and a handful of other developers) have been promising the world in terms of DLC and didn't deliver. Hell...they did the same thing with ME and all we got were two (BotS was fine...Pinacle was not) pieces of DLC that came out LOOOOOOOONG after the game.

Just as long as it's worth it and playable and the core ME2 is still worth the $60.

@ Shael

No one can really say how truly robust and resource-heavy rheir DLC plans are. Dragon Age so far has only one post-release DLC announced and it is rather small and insignificant. Whether they offer substantial content for a higher price at some point is still unknown.

Personally I miss expansion packs, but if DLC is the only way to go I think Bethesda did it right with Fallout 3. Multiple packs which are all sizeable but each has a different focus (combat, exploration, story). It feels like an expansion pack, but it is tighter in focus and you get more new ideas from 5 small packs versus one or two larger expansions.

The nickel and dime stuff is really just not that exciting.

I'd be down for random planets to explore (the universe is always expanding, you know) as long as they were fleshed-out environments and not one crater with a portapotty in it.

We're supposed to be excited for small, proportionally expensive pieces of content that will most likely break the balance of the original game. No thank you, Bioware. Make full expansions or get out of here, please.

It's not just the value either. Expansion packs are a much better experience, imo, because you're going back to several hours of content, rather than several 1 hour periods over a long amount of time. Plus the armor and weapon addons just ruin the balance.

I'll be all for it as long as it's better than the Dragon Age DLC they've put out so far. The Shale download is the only one worth while so far (I'm including the one that hasn't come out yet in that statement to), and that was free! I don't mind having bite sized DLC to play, but at least make them 2 hours long! Or even an hour as long as you give us a handful of new armor, or spells or something to make it worth my time. 560 microsoft point for a half hour adventure isn't worth it. I'd download Rock Band songs over that any day.
