'360 and PS3 are equal,' says Denis Dyack photo

Outspoken Silicon Knights boss Denis Dyack has recently claimed that despite public perception, the consoles of Sony and Microsoft are looking pretty even to developers. We may claim that the PlayStation 3 is a sun-powered God that destroys all with its Blu-ray of death, but according to Dyack, that's not the case.

"Maybe the PS3 has more processing power. The 360 has more available memory. It's pretty much a net, net," Dyack explained. "The public perception of the PS3 was that it was much more powerful. To developers, they look even." The man currently embroiled in a lawsuit with Epic Games did concede, however, that the PS3's Cell could prove to make it the more powerful machine in the end.

On the subject of which console will win the current generation, Dyack was uncertain: "It's a tough one. Microsoft is looking really good. Everyone is looking pretty good. At the beginning, everyone thought Sony would walk away with it. We won't know for sure for two years."

Dyack suggested that Nintendo's chances all hinged on whether or not its controller "stood the test of time." One can then only assume he stormed off looking for someone else to blame for Too Human's myriad problems. Also, I know the game is 360-exclusive, but Blu-Human seemed funny enough to run with for a few seconds.

well... i think that they may be equal, but right know its seems to be the ps3. i own a xbox 360 and i think that it has more quality and a more variety of good games than the ps3. but the ps3 is still good, its just that i like xbox 360 better.

At Quakecon this year Carmack said about the same thing.

He went into some technical detail, but the main point of that part of his keynote was that there have never been two main consoles as similar hardware wise.

How can "...they look even" if "...[the] PS3's Cell could prove to make it the more powerful machine in the end."

"Pluto looks like a planet just like Saturn and Jupiter. But, in the end, it may be determined not to be a planet."

While the Graphical battle may end up a tie, it's obvious from some of Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted that the PS3 is king in terms of processing power. Look at all the shit going on, and the quality of animations and AI on PS3 games. You will see more impressive phsyics and the like from PS3, in the end. Dennis Dyack is kind of fucking weird, maybe a little stupid. I have high hopes for Too Human still, so here's hoping he knows what he's doing. Eternal Darkness was the shit, after all.

For some reason I read "On the subject of which console will win the current generation..." as "...which Microsoft console will win the current generation...". It's gonna be a long night.

I guess the games that come out between now and whenever Too Human hits will really determine whether he's right or not.

Too Human is probably going to suck on both consoles. Sorry, I had to get that off my chest. That game looks like a bad GoW rip-off.

I would've expected Dyack to prefer the PS3. All the unending delays could buy him more time to "perfect" Too Human.

I think SK has become a little compulsive about their Norse-tech baby and really need to purge the whole ordeal from their studio. The sooner they unclog the pipes, the better (coming from someone who has seen far too many creative projects turn to crap due to over-refinement).

Powerful platforms are nothing but fancy paper weights if developers do not take advantage of what the machine can do.

Yeah, he should just shut up and concentrate on making a great game. Sure, it seems like somewhat of a God of War clone, but it's much more than that. The gameplay is somewhat derivative, combining elements of God of War and DMC, but it's got plenty of cool ideas. Have you seen the current state of the game? According to the newest GameSpot preview, you will choose from 5 different character classes and will of course level up. The thing here is how you level up: GameSpot claims that the game follows an experience and skill leveling system similiar to that of World of Warcraft. Also, just like WOW, there is a level cap of 50, as you will be able to use the character you spent so much time developing in the two sequels.

Sounds interesting, and it's good to see this game has evolved, given the amount of time spent on it so far.

Dyack does have an excellent point. Sure, the PS3 may have more processing power, but early in the console's life cycle it's the memory that counts. It's later on, when developers figure out how to more efficiently use the PS3's memory with the Cell processor, that we'll see some real gems come out...if the PS3 lasts that long.

->LordRegulus: Awesome pic. At least gamers this days are cynical enough to ignore unreasonable hype.

->kobewan: Neither console will reach its potential for years, so it's a wee bit early to declare sony winrars due to two games. There's also a pretty good likelihood the ps3 will never be as good as it could, due to how much of a cunt it supposedly is to develop for.

He's obviously a Sony fanboy, just like anyone who thinks the PS3 is somewhat decent.

He should shut up.

So apparently Too Human is just like .hack//GU then. Except this one will never get finished.

Also as annoying as a burden it was on the pricing on manufacturing, having Blu Ray as a disc format certainly doesn't hurt anything in terms of game development. It's nice to have the luxury of all that space, even if many games don't absolutely NEED it. I'd say the PS3 is also superior in terms of peripheral support, running on standard Blue Tooth and USB for everything, instead of Microsoft's over-priced first party only accessories and wireless.

The core horsepower isn't the only thing to differentiate the consoles by to some developers.

Denis Dyack is a MORON and is only pushing this crap to save face for future game development. He must have blinders on and haven't notice that a large percent of multi-platform titles are delayed weeks, if not months, for the PS3 because developers haven't been given the proper support by Sony to make their games work on the best valued blu-ray player, er...I mean next gen gaming console. Hopefully with all of the delays on "Too Human", it will be worth the wait. Otherwise, he needs to be b*tchslapped!

Last gen, the Xbox seemed to be the most powerful, but later on, GC and PS2 games showed off a lot of power.

uhh its an o brainer. the 360 has a high failure rate, i'll put it at 80%, if people played their systems hardcore, i think all the systems would fail.

So in a nutshell, how can a broken console even be taken seriously in terms of anything at all?

A lot of ppl are right, the 360 as it stands now, does have a better line up of games, but then again its entering its 3rd year. Will they be as strong next year now that halo3 is out, and they have no more trump card to play ?

The problem isnt the 360s set of games its that the system itself is a piece of shit that ppl keep claiming to be worth the money, when its not.

YOU'RE not worth the money. i've had my 360 for a while and it's been a blast, so it's obviously been worth the money for me, and i'm sure lots others. it's not like you have to pay for it to be fixed either, you just lose out on some time (heaven forbid you should be doing anything else).

LordRegulus made me laugh out loud. Fuckin' A, man.
Also, The Cell processor is a bitch to develop for in how it's designed and just how goddamned complicated the stupid thing is. Memory on the other hand? Memory's great. Memory's easy to take advantage of. I'd personally go with more memory than a technically more powerful processor that's almost impossible to actually use to its potential, if I were a console developer and not the PC fanboy I am. :P
Fun fact: Most PC games require minimum more than double the amount of RAM the Xbox 360 has, and even more than the PS3. Nobody minds. RAM is cheap.

This coming from a guy whose made shit-tons of ps3 games, oh, wait, he hasn't even started one single game on that platform yet? Hmm.

Any PC technition (such as myself) will tell you that dedicating ram for the video card is better than bottlenecking it into one stick. Bandwith ftw.
